Newly single Canadian singer-actress Avril Lavigne has dismissed rumours that she has found love again after her split from husband Deryck Whibley.

The "Complicated" hitmaker confirmed last month that her marriage to the Sum 41 band star was over just three years after they walked down the aisle, with both parties insisting the split was "amicable".

Whibley was recently spotted holding hands with a new woman during a trip to Las Vegas and Lavigne was rumoured to have moved on herself, reportedly romancing Dole Food Company billionaire Justin Murdock but the singer has confirmed there is no truth to the story, reports contactmusic.com.

"(The rumours are) totally 100 percent not true," said Lavigne's representative.

It is not known if Scherzinger will also be starring in the show, which continues the story of an obsessive, faceless theatre ghoul.

Marlon Jackson has commended Harry Connick, Jr. for reprimanding the behaviour of six white men dancing as the Jackson 5 on a Aussie talent show - but is adamant the performers didn't mean to cause offence.

A group of performers, dubbed the Jackson Jive, left Connick, Jr. dumbstruck on long-running Australian show Hey Hey It's Saturday, after they painted their faces black and danced behind a Michael Jackson wannabe, who donned white face paint.

The routine caused controversy all over the globe, with the show's host issuing an apology to Connick, Jr., who earlier insisted he "definitely wouldn't have done" the show if he had known about the act's content.

But the group hasn't faced a backlash from a certain family - the Jacksons insist they were not offended by the act.

Marlon tells AccessHollywood.com, "Wow, and you want a comment from us about that? Man, if they turned up looking like that in the United States!

"They probably weren't trying to be offensive about it or anything of that nature with the family. We thank Harry for (speaking out), but we also understand that they weren't trying to be disrespectful for the family."

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has disclosed that she is playing a "bold" character in Farhan Akhtar' new venture, 'Karthik Calling Karthik'.

"'Karthik Calling Karthik' is a romantic thriller and my role is quite bold and optimistic in the film as opposite to Farhan's which is a very pessimistic one," Deepika said.

The movie, which is directed by Vijay Lalwani, is about a person who receives his own call.

Deepika was in Delhi for the launch of two new soap variants of Fiama Di Wills, which is also the associate sponsor of the upcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW).

She also launched designer Sumeet Varma's preview collection for WLIFW titled 'The Life of a Swan-Swan lake'.

When asked on her preference for dresses, she said: "Personally I like Indian dresses, but I am ok with western outfits as well. While choosing a dress what I see is whether I am comfortable in it or not."

She also promotes ports. "I played badminton with Aamir Khan for a cause. (And) I will try the same way if I can promote other games like athletics and basketball too along with badminton," said Deepika, who was last seen in romantic drama "Love Aaj Kal".

Asked about her Diwali plans, she said: "I will be with my family."

Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan will adorn the ramp for the grand finale of the HDIL Couture Week, which is slated to take place from Oct 11 till Oct 16 in Mumbai.

Salman Khan was also in the race for showcasing his collections from Being Human, for the grand finale. Now he will be walking the ramp on Oct 13.

Shah Rukh will be joined by his wife Gouri for showcasing his 'best friend' Karan Johar's debut ensemble. Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar, along with Ajay Devgan will be walking the ramp for Salman Khan's clothesline from his charity, Being Human.

Colombian pop star Shakira has disclosed that she was very plump when she was a teenager. She added that this was because she was concentrating on becoming a singer that she forgot about her looks.

"As a teenager I was plump but my appearance wasn't so important at that time. I focused much more on my music and song writing... I know that image in this profession is a matter of opinion. I think the external appearance in show business is important and over the years I've discovered my assets. Honestly, I've never seen myself as a goddess or sex symbol," she said, reports imdb.com.

Shakira, 32, has now toned down so much that she is happy to use skinny outfits.

"We all have our insecurities but I used to have more of those days in my twenties. I found nothing satisfied me and I just wanted to hide from the world... You should always make the most of what you've got and I think I've tried my entire life to figure it out. I wouldn't have made a video like 'She Wolf' when I was younger, that's for sure. Now you never know what could happen with them," she said.

Even though she is okay with her flesh show for professional reason, she avoids it in her personal life.

"When I perform I feel free. But when I'm on the beach I don't run around topless... Perhaps it's difficult to understand but I'm kind of shy when it comes to my body," she said.

Acclaimed director Madhur Bhandarkar will be directing a movie on the life of Lalit Modi, which has tentatively titled Commissioner.

Commissioner, which is the forthcoming venture of Bhandarkar, is speculated to be based on the controversial life of Lalit Modi, who is the Indian Premier League Commissioner.  Modi, who is the kingpin in cricket drama, will be definitely be a cracking on-screen subject.

Percept Picture Company will produce the film.

Modi had even met Bhandarkar during a part organized by Vijay Mallya in Bangalore and is well aware of the fact that Madhur will be directing his 'biopic'.

A source says, "There are a couple of other directors who are also in the fray. However, Madhur is the foremost contender for this film because he is a realistic filmmaker and this film simply cannot deviate from reality."

Madhur said, "Yes, PPC made the offer, but I have yet to take a decision. Right now, I am tied up with the post-production work of another PPC film, Jail."

Shailendra Singh, JT MD Percept Picture Company said, "It's true that we are making Commissioner. We researched his life and the entire journey of IPL and we have written a fictional script. We had a brief chat with Shridhar Raghvan in South Africa to write the script. On Wednesday, we had a long discussion with Modi. He is excited, but preoccupied with the Champions League which started yesterday (Thursday). He said he will get back to us soon. He was very keen to know who will direct and we gave him some options. Now it depends on who likes the idea and who is available to make the film."

Singh added, "We plan to release the film around the time the 2011 World Cup will be happening in India. Lalit Modi's journey is quite amazing as he earned billions of rupees for BCCI in 22 days. It will be a dramatic story with content ranging from cricket to entertainment and it will also touch on match-fixing."

The terrorist attack which happened on Pakistan Army's headquarters in Rawalpindi on Saturday has claimed the lives of four guerrillas, four soldiers and a civilian dead.

The fight, which lasted for about 50 minutes, seems to have been initiated by 6 Islamists, who used three bikes for attacking the fortified complex.

The gunmen, who were dressed in military fatigues, first fired at one security post, killing soldiers. They then drove further before they were halted at a second checkpoint. They then took charge of the grenade van and started using the automatic weapons.

Even though it took some for the solders to retaliate back, they were able to claim the lives of four of the 6 attackers, while the other two escaped. A civilian, who had by mistake passed via that way, was also killed.

Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said: "Four security personnel have been martyred. The situation is completely under control. All terrorists who tried to enter (the complex) have been killed."

The Pakistani media said two terrorists had managed to give the slip.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, a terrorist group, has been accused for this attack.

US President Barack Obama has mentioned that he will be donating his $1.4 million prize money which he received from Nobel Prize for Peace to the charities.

But he mentioned that the decision regarding the charities or charity for whom he will be giving away the prize money has not yet been decided.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs mentioned that Obama would be travelling to Oslo for receiving the award at the end of the year.

Obama, who was himself surprised by this announcement, said the Nobel Peace award to him represents hopes of millions and millions throughout the world and is not just the achievements of one person.

US President Barack Obama, who submitted a the report of US – India nuke deal to the US Congress, has mentioned in his letter that US will work towards restricting India's nuclear weapons expansion programme.

The Presidential letter has to be submitted by the US President under section 204 of the US-India Civilian Nuclear Cooperation Act in every six months.

Section 204 (a) of what the Obama White House formally calls the ''US-India Nuclear Cooperation Approval and Nonproliferation Enhancement Act'' requires the U.S President to certify to Congress that ''it is the policy of the U.S to work with members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), individually and collectively, to agree to further restrict the transfers of equipment and technology related to the enrichment of uranium and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel'' to India.

Section B of the act says the President ''shall seek to achieve, by the earliest possible date, either within the NSG or with relevant NSG Participating Governments, the adoption of principles, reporting, and exchanges of information as may be appropriate to assure peaceful use and accounting of by-product material.''

Distilled from the legalese is the commitment that the US will not allow India to in any way enhance its weapons-making capability riding on the civilian nuclear deal.

''We cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations and in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust endangers more people. And that's why we've begun to take concrete steps to pursue a world without nuclear weapons, because all nations have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear power, but all nations have the responsibility to demonstrate their peaceful intentions,'' said Obama said after receiving the Nobel award.

''Some of the work confronting us will not be completed during my presidency. Some, like the elimination of nuclear weapons, may not be completed in my lifetime,'' Obama said post-award. ''But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.''

US, hailing India as "an important ally", mentioned that US is in constant talks with India for bringing peace in the world.

"I think it goes without saying that India is an important ally," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, who was answering to the questions on whether the US President will showcase further commitment toward establishing peace across the world, including India.

Referring to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's upcoming visit next month, the spokesman noted that after Obama returns from his trip to Asia, "We will have... an important event here at the White House - the President's first state dinner."

"And obviously we continue to be very engaged with the Indians to bring about peace in obviously an important region of the world," Gibbs said.

When asked about the impact of Nobel Prize on the climate bill in US and the chances for successful conclusion of Copenhagen talks, he said, "It's important for the world to understand that the US is taking, granted, long overdue but important, steps to ensuring that we're part of that solution."

But "the challenges that we have are not going to be solved by one man, they're not going to be solved by one nation, unless or until other developing nations - the Chinese, the Indians, the Brazilians - also come to that larger table with solutions that are not just voluntary but that embody, again, international collective action to address that issue," Gibbs said.

"Obviously the president has promised and staked his belief that it is important to do this, and we will continue to work on it through the end of the year," he said adding: "If it happens, we'd certainly be proud to do that and go to Copenhagen with it."

When asked about the change of views of US on the world issues after Obama assumed his charge as the US President, Gibbs said: "Well, I'll leave (that) to the myriad of pundits."

The spokesman said he would reiterate that re-establishing "US leadership in the world through reengaging the world in active diplomacy on issues like nuclear non-proliferation, on climate change, on peace in the Middle East - that is a good thing both here for our safety and security."

"And it's a good thing for the world in the ideals that we hope to achieve and that are shared by billions on the planet. And I think it's something the president is enormously proud of."

Indian ambassador to United Nations Hardeep Singh Puri has demanded the world leaders to adopt necessary steps for countering the deadly combination of terrorism and drugs.

"We would like to express our profound concern on the deep-rooted nexus between drug mafias, arms dealers, and money launderers for financing terrorism," said Puri while addressing the committee of the General Assembly, which tackles the social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues across the world.

"There is a need to create as well as reinforce bilateral, regional and international cooperation to develop strategies to combat the menace of this nexus," he added.

He has also put forward a multi-fold approach for handling the issues of drug cultivation and distribution.

"Unfortunately, there has not been substantial support for these activities by the international community in the affected regions," he said.

Puri has also urged the world nations to adopt steps for tackling problem drug addiction as well as providing sustainable alternative livelihood to drug cultivators.

"We would like to voice our support for such initiatives by strengthening not just North-South cooperation but also South-South cooperation by sharing of best practices and lessons learnt as well as by providing technical assistance," he said.

Mentioning that India leads the list of licit opium producers, he stressed that New Delhi has put a restriction to the use of drugs.

"We ensure that the demand and supply of licit opiates required for genuine medicinal and scientific purposes is maintained," he said.

The World Drug Report 2009, produced by the UN, reported an overall decline in cultivation of drug crops for drugs and demand for narcotics.

The 'strategic and military partnership' between India and Russia will get a 10 year extension during the meeting between PM Manmohan Singh and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, which is slated to take place in December in Moscow.

The foundation for the extension of the treaty till 2020 will be laid by defence minister A K Antony during his visit to Moscow next week, when he will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov.

Russia, which is currently the largest military supplier to India, will be retaining its status for a while, with the 15 billion worth arms contracts and projects, in the pipeline. The relation is being extended just because India has expressed interest for continuing the purchase of Russian military hardware and software.

"During the October 14-15 meeting, Antony will emphasis India's interest in ensuring FGFA's development is completed by 2016 and IAF can begin inducting it by 2017,'' said an official.

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have successfully produced liver cells from patients' skin cells. They repeated the experiment of James Thomson and found a type of stem cell which could generate the liver cells.

The scientists took the skin cells and reprogrammed those to form a regenerative tissue. They saw that, those skin derived cells, pluripotent stem cells had the capacity to develop almost 200 cell types in the human body including the liver cells.

Stephen A. Duncan, professor in human and molecular genetics, Medical College of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (MCW-M) led the project along with postdoctoral fellow Karim Si-Tayeb, and graduate student Fallon Noto.

Duncan said, "This is a crucial step forward towards developing therapies that can potentially replace the need for scarce liver transplants, currently the only treatment for most advanced liver disease."

The researchers are hopeful that this finding can be used to diagnose and treat potentially hazardous metabolic liver diseases.

Liver is the master organ of the body controlling most of the metabolic functions like insulin secretion, digestion and detoxification. Once this is affected, it can result in a wide range of disorders including diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Liver malfunction can be due to infections like Hepatitis, genetic mutation or excessive alcohol consumption.

Scientists in Sweden have created an easy formula for making disposable batteries out of paper and simple salt. Interestingly, it can produce one volt of electricity.

According to them, this type of salt and paper battery can be a guiding source for the future biodegradable sensors.

"We wanted to make a battery that was very simple and used the same material for both electrodes," said Leif Nyholm, a professor at Uppsala University in Sweden and co-author of a study that appeared in the journal Nano Letters.

Nyholm also added, "To make it simple we just put NaCl (table salt) in."

The battery was made up of multiple layers of cellulose, coated in a conductive polymer 50 nanometers thick with layers of filter paper sandwiched. Here water serves as a carrier of ions.

They found the their prototype could generate only one volt of energy but it could produce more if more layers are added to it. However, such types of batteries can be used only for operating temperature monitoring sensors.

The battery is also an environment-friendly product without producing any harmful by-product.

They also used the marine algae for preparing cellulose. Cellulose produces 100 times more surface area compared to the normal paper.

Similarly, the researchers used salt and cellulose combination to make a capacitor to dump all the electrical charge at once.

According to a lead researcher, Inzelt, this product may find application in pacemakers, nanomotors and optical displays.

Nyholm said, "There are so many things we want to do with an actual commercial device." "But we still have a lot of work to fully characterize its performance."

According to the Australian scientist, a specific group of bacterium called Cupriavidus metallidurans helps in the formation of gold by a process known as biomineralisation.

These types of bacteria catalyse the biomineralisation of gold to form the active metal using a special cellular mechanism.

Frank Reith, leader of the research team at University of Adelaide said, "A number of years ago we discovered that the metal-resistant bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans occurred on gold grains from two sites in Australia."

He also said, "The sites are 3500 km apart, in southern New South Wales and northern Queensland, so when we found the same organism on grains from both sites we thought we were onto something."

"It made us wonder why these organisms live in this particular environment. The results of this study point to their involvement in the active detoxification of Au complexes leading to formation of gold biominerals," Reith added.

In the process of their experiments, they observed that, C. Metallidurans pushed the formation of toxic gold complexes from a solution in the lab. Then they gained the metal resistance to protect themselves from the toxic influence.

This led to the formation of metallic gold used to prepare gold nuggets.

Scientists combined two techniques such as Synchrotron Techniques ( the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) and Molecular Microbial Techniques to understand the process of biomineralisation in bacteria.

This is the first direct proof that a group of bacteria are actively involved in the cycling of precious metals like gold. This may open the door for the development of biosensors.

"The discovery of an Au-specific operon means that we can now start to develop gold-specific biosensors, which will help mineral explorers to find new gold deposits," Reith said in an interview.

Movies & Commercials / The bitter experience!
Oct 09, 2009, 09:48 PM
Pyramid Saimira is one production house that amazed everyone by starting 10 movies at a time last year.

Today the production house is suffering with letdowns like 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' and 'Kuselan'. On top of all these the firm is handling a lot of other issues that is disturbing its business like improper salary and more.

The company had shares with a face value (or par value) of 88 rupees in the year 2006 and released 84.44 lakhs shares. The share value of this company has fallen terrifically from Rs.400 to Rs.14.60. These factors further adds oil to the burning troubles...

Even if the firm has a number of talented administrative officers and proprietors, the company is loosing its profit in a high scale.

We honestly wish that this comes to an end...

If sources are to be believed, the forthcoming film of Balachandar has been titled 'Moi Roobai 101'. It would be a story of romance and human emotions, it is said.

It is to be noted that Kamal Haasan has recently announced that he would direct his 'guru' Balachandar for a yet to be titled movie, which would go on floors soon.

"I am producing and directing a movie, in which Balachandar is acting with me. This is the first time for us to share the screen space together. His role has got enormous importance in the film," Kamal was quoted as saying.

KB is the mentor of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, the two superstars of Tamil cinema.
