Free spectacles distributed to students

About 2,000 students have received spectacles in first phase

TIRUNELVELI: Free spectacles were distributed to the students, who were diagnosed of suffering from vision defects, here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, District Collector M. Jayaraman said the teachers, who were scientifically trained in identifying the students with vision defect and screened 1,53,485 students across the district, had found that 23,173 students were suffering from vision defects. While 2,000 students had received the spectacles in the first phase, 4,485 students would receive it before September 30.

Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T.P.M. Maideen Khan, Minister for Information Technology Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Tirunelveli MP S. Ramasubbu, MLAs M. Appavu, N. Maalairaja, H. Vasanthakumar and P. Veldurai, Mayor A.L. Subramanian, Deputy Mayor K. Muthuramalingam and others participated.
