Qualcomm brings 10-gigabit 5G to laptops and home broadband

Qualcomm wants to make its 10-gigabit 5G modem a practical reality in your PC or home internet service, and it's giving companies a helping hand to speed things along. The company has introduced an M.2 reference design for the X65 modem (plus its lower-spec X62 counterpart) to give hardware makers a "plug-and-play" option for laptops, tablets, and fixed-in-place devices like home broadband equipment. In theory, you'd have a wireless connection for your PC that puts even faster fiber internet to shame.

The M.2 card supports 5G on both millimeter wave (like some US providers offer) and sub-6GHz frequencies. Qualcomm was quick to add that software updates are providing wider support for mmWave (particularly as it rolls out in China) as well as better battery life.

The reference design is available to companies now, although it'll take some time before this translates to finished laptops and other products you can buy. Qualcomm hopes for the first solutions to be ready by late 2021.

The bigger question, as is often the case, revolves around real-world speeds. Verizon (Engadget's current parent company) only just managed to reach 4.3Gbps speeds in a trial reported days ago. It could take a long time before 5G is fast enough to justify a 10Gbps modem, and even longer before you can really use the added speed.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 778G is a 6nm chip for 5G phones

Qualcomm has officially launched the Snapdragon 778G 5G processor, which will power the Honor 50 series and other upcoming mid-to-high-end devices. It joins the Snapdragon 780G, which Qualcomm introduced in March, as one of the company's options for upper mid-range phones. The 778G SoC uses Kryo 670 CPU, which Qualcomm says can enhance overall CPU performance by 40 percent. Meanwhile, its Adreno 642L GPU is designed to deliver up to 40 percent faster graphics rendering compared to the previous generation.

The chipset comes with the latest (6th generation) Qualcomm AI Engine, as well. That particular feature enhances every video call and phone call with its noise suppression capabilities and provides AI-based camera experiences. Speaking of cameras, the processor has triple ISP, allowing users to capture three photos or videos using three lenses at once, including ones in wide, ultra-wide, and zoom modes. It supports HDR10+ video capturing, as well, which gives you the power to capture images with dramatic colors and contrasts.

As you'd expect from the name, the 778G enables 5G connectivity, while also supporting Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6 speeds. It also has select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including Variable Rate Shading and Qualcomm Game Quick Touch that enables up to 20 percent faster input response. In addition to the Honor 50 series, the 778G SoC will also power upcoming Motorola, Oppo, IQOO, Realme and Xiaomi phones. The devices are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2021, so we don't have to wait that long to see the SoC in action. Honor 50 could be the first 778G-powered phone to come out, though that's not a certainty yet.

Fang Fei, president of Honor's product line, said:

"The Snapdragon 778G 5G Mobile Platform is packed with innovation in 5G, imaging, and AI. Through close collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, the brand-new HONOR 50 series will be powered by the Snapdragon 778G Mobile Platform. HONOR 50 series will set new industry standards for product design and deliver a transformative experience for our users."

Summer Game Fest returns June 10th to unofficially kickoff E3

Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest returns next month, and it sounds like it'll start with a bang. Keighley is promising "a memorable month of announcements and updates," beginning with a world premiere showcase featuring more than a dozen game world premieres and announcements, as well as a preview of what to expect from affiliated publishers' own livestreams in the following weeks.

More than 30 publishers are taking part in Summer Game Fest this year, including some big names that haven't been announced for E3. Among them are PlayStation, Blizzard Entertainment, Devolver Digital and Electronic Arts (which is also running its own EA Play Live event in July). Also taking part in Summer Game Fest are Epic Games, 2K, Amazon Games, Capcom, Sega, Warner Bros. Games, Ubisoft and Xbox.

Summer Game Fest's opening event takes place just two days before the start of E3, on June 10th at 2PM ET. Along with all of the game reveals, Kick Off Live! will feature a performance from Weezer and a Day of the Devs indie showcase. Summer Game Fest's own programming will stream on Facebook, Twitch, Twitter, YouTube and other platforms, but the publisher-run streams might not be as broadly available.

Android 12 Beta hands-on: A fresh look with few major changes for now

Google released the Android 12 public beta at its I/O developer conference yesterday and those who don't mind dealing with potentially buggy software can already try it out. The preview of the upcoming OS will be available on the company's own Pixel phones as well as devices from OnePlus, Nokia, TCL, ASUS, Sharp and more. Though Google teased new features like adaptive themes, indicators and toggles for your camera and mic, as well as new permissions settings and shortcuts, few of them are actually available in this version. Most of the changes are visual at the moment. But it's still a nice look at what we can expect when Android 12 officially launches later this year.

This is the biggest refresh to Android's look in years. Android 11 was pretty similar to Android 10 and, honestly, wasn't a very exciting upgrade. But with the promise of new themes and interactive widgets, Android 12 should be a much bigger deal. For now, the beta doesn't appear to have the dynamic palettes under Google's new Material You design that change color scheme based on your wallpaper. I switched between wallpapers that were mostly blue, red, orange or pink and the text remained the same shade of bluish gray in each case.

What does look different is the new lock screen, which has updated font styles and neater notifications. When you have a string of alerts, the clock is relegated to the top left of the page. After you dismiss them all, the clock expands and moves to the center, making it easier to see. It's a small but nice touch.

I have yet to see any of the changes Material You is meant to bring, like font or widget sizes adapting to each individual's preferences. The widgets menu is better organized, but there appear to be few actually new options. The Notifications shade is certainly noticeably different, though.

Israeli extremists are using chat apps to organize violent attacks against Palestinians

As hostilities escalate between Israel and Hamas, some Israelis have turned to chat apps to organize violent attacks against Palestinians. The New York Times and FakeReporter, an organization that tracks misinformation in the country, found that at least 100 WhatsApp groups and some 20 Telegram channels dedicated to advocating for violence against Palestinians have sprung up over the past week. They feature names like "Death to the Arabs," "The Jewish Guard" and "The Revenge Troops," and local authorities have linked them to dozens of violent incidents against Palestinians who are citizens of Israel.

While extremists the world over have used social media and chat apps to organize and incite violence in the past, researchers the NYT interviewed say these groups and channels have gone further in their use of WhatsApp and Telegram than movements like Stop the Steal. Many of them have seen people not only planning specific action against Palestinians, but also executing on those plans. In one WhatsApp group, the paper found evidence of people sharing instructions on how to make Molotov cocktails and improvised explosives. In a Telegram channel with 400 or so members, the NYT saw admins asking for the addresses of Arab-owned businesses.

Facebook and WhatsApp have historically struggled to crack down on policy violations that have occurred in private chats. In this instance, WhatsApp has banned some of the people involved in the groups on its platform. With conversations between individuals encrypted and groups limited to 256 participants, the company's enforcement efforts have relied on individuals reporting those involved in the groups for terms of service violations. In turn, many of them have taken to vetting new members. Private WhatsApp groups require an invite from an admin to join, and it's not possible to search for them on the platform.

"As a private messaging service, we do not have access to the contents of people's personal chats though when information is reported to us, we take action to ban accounts we believe may be involved in causing imminent harm," a spokesperson for WhatsApp told Engadget. "We also quickly respond to valid legal requests from law enforcement for the limited information available to us." We've also reached out to Telegram for comment, and we'll update this article when we hear back from the company.

At first, Israeli police didn't act on information on the groups and channels from FakeReporter, but they say they're now "tracking social media and monitoring movements on the ground." A source with the authorities told The New York Times police hadn't seen similar use of WhatsApp and Telegram among Palestinians.

Apple's SignTime brings up a sign language interpreter on demand

Apple has long taken accessibility seriously. Just spend five minutes in the relevant section of your iPhone's settings and you'll find a veritable trove of helpful settings -- many of them useful to everyone. Today, the company is ready to announce a host of new tools across its ecosystem of products.

Perhaps the most impactful is SignTime. Initially, SignTime will be available for the most obvious ways of contacting the company: customer service. With SignTime, you will be able to connect with an interpreter via your phone or browser with sign language assistance in real-time. Customers have been able to arrange an in-store visit with a sign language interpreter, but with SignTime you will also be able to go directly into a store at any time and use the service to make purchases or seek technical assistance. SignTime launches tomorrow and will be available in American, British and French sign languages. More languages will be added in the future.

If you own an Apple Watch (or wanted one, but were worried about your ability to use it), then the introduction of AssistiveTouch for the wearable will be welcome news. AssistiveTouch has been available on the iPhone for a while now, but with AssistiveTouch on the watch, you'll be able to navigate and perform core tasks -- like answering a call or starting a workout -- with a one-handed gesture. Think things like making a fist or a pinching gesture to trigger an action and operate an on-screen cursor. Though it's not clear at this time how specific different abilities will affect things. If your wrists aren't as dexterous or pinching isn't an option and so on.

The iPad gets its own special addition, which is the implementation of eye-tracking at the OS level. With a compatible MFi accessory, you'll soon be able to control your tablet with your gaze alone. Apple says there are third-party partners onboard and compatible devices will be available later this year. Use your eyes to move the cursor and hold your gaze to click. Simple.

For those with hearing impairment, new bi-directional hearing aids should mean making and receiving calls gets a little more seamless. Apple was an early pioneer in making the hearing aid experience with an iPhone much smoother. Its unique implementation of Bluetooth meant "made for iPhone" hearing aids could easily connect to your iPhone in a way that wasn't possible on Android. Google's operating system has caught up some in recent years, but it's still hit and miss.

The "bi-directional" part simply means that compatible hearing aids with microphones in them can be used much like how you'd use AirPods when on a call. No need to touch the phone or use its mic, just answer the call and both sides of the conversation are handled in-ear.

If your accessibility issue is vision-related, VoiceOver on the iPhone is going to become a lot more robust. Right now, your handset can tell you what's on-screen, even describing what's in the image, but not much more beyond that. In the next iteration, it'll be able to tell you more specific information, such as the color of the dog in the photo or what's around it. If a friend or family member is in the image, and your phone knows who that person is via tags and face recognition, it'll be able to let you know that it's uncle Jerome in a plaid shirt with his golden retriever. Nifty.

There are many more clever tricks incoming, including an improved optical character recognition (OCR) that allows you to indicate which section to read, rather than the phone just reading out all of it, and an new background-sound feature will help those sensitive to external stimuli play a selection of soothing sounds under their media to further block out external noises.

Most of the new features will roll out in the coming months, with SignTime launching tomorrow.

Apple exec Craig Federighi calls the state of Mac malware 'not acceptable'

For years, Apple has consistently knocked Windows for its malware issues, claiming macOS is by far the more secure desktop operating system. However, faced with a legal battle that could decide the future of its business, the company offered a surprising admission: macOS has its own malware problem. The acknowledgement came from Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi, who testified on Wednesday in the company's antitrust case with Epic Games (via Protocol).

"Today, we have a level of malware on the Mac that we don't find acceptable," Federighi told the court in testimony. "If you took Mac security techniques and applied them to the iOS ecosystem, with all those devices, all that value, it would get run over to a degree dramatically worse than is already happening on the Mac."

Federighi made the claim when the judge presiding over the case asked him why iOS shouldn't adopt the same app store model as macOS. "Put that same situation in place for iOS and it would be a very bad situation for our customers," he said.

Federighi went on to illustrate the difference between the two platforms and why Apple prohibits practices like sideloading on iOS by comparing the Mac to a car. "You can take it off road if you want, and you can drive wherever you want," the executive said -- former Apple CEO Steve Jobs once employed a similar analogy in a different context. Asked if macOS is safe, he said it is "if operated correctly." "There's a certain level of responsibility." Federighi added. "With iOS, we were able to create something where children -- heck, even infants -- are able to operate an iOS device and be safe in doing so. It's really a different product."

The courtroom battle between Apple and Epic has revealed all sorts of these types of details that companies usually hold close to their chest. We now know, for example, Epic spent $146 million to secure Borderlands 3 as a PC exclusive. With Tim Cook expected to testify on Friday, we could learn more surprising information about the company before Apple and Epic present their closing arguments on Monday.

Ford unveils its electric F-150 with 300 miles of range and 563HP

Just one year after Ford debuted its first hybrid F-150, the company is ready to show off an all-electric version of its iconic truck. The F-150 Lightning lives up to its "truck of the future" billing, as it prepares to lead a string of electric pickups and SUVs that are about to hit the streets, including Tesla's Cybertruck, the Hummer EV and others.

This dual-motor equipped truck is capable of delivering up to 563 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque, the most of any F-150 ever. It's unclear who will win a tug of war, but if anyone challenges you to a drag race, then Ford says it can manage 0 - 60 MPH in the mid four seconds range.

It's always in 4x4 mode, and while it doesn't have any crab walking capabilities, there are four drive modes available, with rated payload and towing limits of 1,800 pounds and 10,000 pounds on the extended range version. Oh, and since there's no motor up front, it has a 400-liter frunk to provide dry, lockable storage that you can open with just a keypad code. It's also uniquely equipped with an independent rear suspension, however for more information on how it will ride you should check out Autoblog.

Google's commitment to Matter could unite the fragmented smart home industry

Google announced a giant slew of updates to its various software products at its I/O developer conference this week, and in addition to Android, Wear, Assistant and a ton of other news, it's not forgetting about the smart home. At the show, the company shared a few updates around its Nest and Android products that focus on a commitment to the recently renamed Matter ecosystem.

As a recap, Matter was formerly known as Project CHIP, or Connected Home over IP. It's a collaboration between industry giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, Samsung and more to standardize the historically fragmented smart home ecosystem. Matter will support a variety of protocols and assistants, including Siri, Alexa, the Google Assistant as well as Bluetooth, Ethernet, WiFi and Thread. At I/O, Google said it's "committed to supporting Matter" and that it's "bringing Matter to Android and capable Nest products."

Matter will bring about simpler setup processes and interoperability, and with this your Android phone can control all compatible Matter devices once support rolls out on a wider scale. Theoretically, this means you can use an Android device to control an Echo or HomeKit-powered speaker, for instance.

According to Google, Android will offer built-in support for Matter as well as ways to easily set up and control Matter-certified devices. It also announced that its products with Thread, including the Nest Wifi, Nest Hub Max and Nest Hub (2nd generation), "will become connection points for Matter devices." Plus, Nest displays and speakers will be "automatically updated to control Matter devices," which Google promised will lead to "faster and more reliable experiences whether they use Wi-Fi, Thread or ethernet."

To help users keep track of everything that's compatible with Assistant, Google's also launching a smart home directory that will include tutorial videos, product reviews and ratings. You'll be able to search via keywords or use filters to narrow results down to see what devices best fit your needs.

In addition, Google is adding support for WebRTC to reduce latency for live video and audio streaming from security cameras or video doorbells to your TVs, displays or phones. Companies like Logitech, Arlo, Wyze and Netatmo are expected to integrate WebRTC with Google Assistant in the coming weeks. Finally, the company is also improving its Home and Away routines by enabling automatic activation of your smart home processes based on when you leave or return to your house.

Google's Project Starline is a 'magic window' for 3D telepresence

The future of immersive video chat might not require a headset. Google showed off Project Starline, which uses a combination of specialized hardware and computer vision technology to create a "magic window" that can beam a life-sized, 3D image of the person you're chatting with into a special display that makes it appear as if they're sitting in front of you.

"To make this experience possible, we are applying research in computer vision, machine learning, spatial audio and real-time compression," Google's Clay Bavor wrote in a blog post. "We've also developed a breakthrough light field display system that creates a sense of volume and depth that can be experienced without the need for additional glasses or headsets." Light field is a way to describe the properties and direction of light -- AR startup Magic Leap is the most prominent example of a light field display to date.

For now, it appears Starline requires a fairly elaborate setup. Images shared by Google resemble a kind of photo booth, with several lights, sensors and a large display. But the result, according to Google, is an immersive video chat experience that feels like you're actually sitting with the person you're speaking with.

The setup is only available in a few Google offices for now, and the company says it's already spent thousands of hours testing the technology among its employees. The company didn't specify what its future plans for Starline might entail or how much the setup would cost, but it's "planning trial deployments with enterprise partners later this year." Eventually, Google says it wants to make Starline "more affordable and accessible" and that it could one day be incorporated into Google's other communications products.

Google plans to build a commercial quantum computer by 2029

Google developers are confident they can build a commercial-grade quantum computer by 2029. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the plan during today's I/O stream, and in a blog post, quantum AI lead engineer Erik Lucero further outlined the company's goal to "build a useful, error-corrected quantum computer" within the decade.

Executives also revealed Google's new campus in Santa Barbara, California, which is dedicated to quantum AI. The campus has Google's first quantum data center, hardware research laboratories, and the company's very own quantum processor chip fabrication facilities.

The main benefits of quantum computing come in terms of processing power, scale and accuracy, allowing researchers to run complex computations incredibly quickly. Experts predict quantum computing will help drive breakthroughs in a number of industries, including healthcare, economics, encryption, artificial intelligence, sustainability and energy.

"As we look 10 years into the future, many of the greatest global challenges, from climate change to handling the next pandemic, demand a new kind of computing," Lucero said. "To build better batteries (to lighten the load on the power grid), or to create fertilizer to feed the world without creating 2 percent of global carbon emissions (as nitrogen fixation does today), or to create more targeted medicines (to stop the next pandemic before it starts), we need to understand and design molecules better. That means simulating nature accurately. But you can't simulate molecules very well using classical computers."

Google isn't alone in the race for quantum computing: IBM is installing its first commercial quantum computer at the Cleveland Clinic this year, as part of a decade-long partnership to drive discoveries in the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Google Photos gives users more control over AI-powered Memories

Google Photos is getting a suite of updates this year leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a focus on the Memories feature. Most notably, Google is giving users more control over the pics that appear in Memories, which are automatically selected and sorted using machine learning.

Starting today, users will be able to rename or remove Trip highlights altogether. Rolling out soon, users will have the power to remove a single photo from a Memory, remove Best of Month Memories, and rename or remove specific Memories. And later this summer, Google will make existing controls to hide photos of certain time periods or people easier to use.

"Whether it's a breakup, a loss or some other tough time, we don't want to relive everything," Google said in a blog post. "We specifically heard from the transgender community that resurfacing certain photos is painful, so we've been working with our partners at GLAAD and listening to feedback to make reminiscing more inclusive."

Also this summer, Google Photos will group pictures based on subtle patterns, picking out specific objects, settings or visual trends in your camera roll and generating a gallery from there. New Best of Month and Trip highlights will go live in the app today, and later this year, fresh Memories based on events like Diwali, Hanukkah and Lunar New Year will roll out.

Google Photos is also getting a feature called Cinematic moments, which uses machine learning to create a moving image out of two photos taken in rapid succession. These will go live in the Recent Highlights section of Google Photos.

Google and Samsung joined forces on the new Wear OS

After years without a major update, Wear OS is getting some love today at Google's I/O developer conference. The software's latest version is coming, and was developed in collaboration with Samsung. This isn't the deep Fitbit integration some of us might have been expecting since Google completed its acquisition earlier this year, but it's still a pretty huge deal.

Wear OS meets Tizen OS
I've long considered Samsung's Tizen to be the best smartwatch platform for Android users and this partnership demonstrates Google's ability to recognize the Korean company's expertise in this area. Though neither Tizen nor Wear OS measure up to Apple's watchOS at the moment, Samsung's software at least offers good built-in health and fitness tracking, along with a navigation system that makes common functions easy to find. Wear OS, meanwhile, is a simple skeleton that relies on cards and Assistant to get most things done, but has much more third-party app support than Tizen.

We don't have all the details on what the new UI will look like yet, but based on some renders Google has provided, it looks like some navigation changes are coming. First, a double tap of a physical button on the watch case will let you switch between your current and previous apps, like a Spotify dashboard and a Strava workout session.

Google is also expanding its existing Tiles feature, which lets you swipe horizontally through a selection of widgets, to third-party apps. It was previously limited to first-party functions like Weather, Fit and Heart Rate. Some third-party examples we've seen so far include a relaxation timer from Calm. Google said you'll be able to customize the carousel of Tiles to make your favorites easier to reach. Hopefully, we'll see more support from developers since the Tiles alpha was opened up in March. A horizontal carousel of widgets would make Wear OS feel much more similar to Tizen, at least on the surface.

Google also said it learned things from Samsung like how to optimize battery efficiency and run certain processes in the background for a better user experience. In addition to improved performance like apps starting 30 percent faster and having smoother animations and transitions, the two companies also worked on things like the chipsets and platform-level enhancements. This should improve battery life, though don't expect to see longer runtimes just yet. The energy efficiencies are more to enable useful processes without draining too much juice. Things like constant heart rate monitoring or sleep tracking, for example, were possible on previous versions of Wear OS but would sap the battery too much to be really useful.

The new combined platform would be more open, according to director of product management for Wear OS Bjorn Kilburn, and Google would be providing a new reference UI for watch makers. "We're going to enable OEMs the ability to customize that experience much more deeply than they were able to in the past," he told Engadget. This means companies like Fossil and Montblanc can tweak the software more deeply than before, which could result in smartwatches from different OEMs being more distinct than before.

Improved health and fitness tracking
One area where Wear OS fell short of Tizen and Apple's watchOS before was health and fitness tracking. Though Google Fit tracked things like your steps progress and heart health points (gained from cardio activity), Wear OS didn't offer a very well-integrated exercise-tracking system.

Samsung to completely rebuild the health and fitness framework on Wear," Kilburn told Engadget. He said the team collaborated with Samsung to learn how to run things like constant heart rate tracking without draining too much battery. Google also got input from both partners on how to make use of sensors like accelerometers and heart rate scanners for a comprehensive health-tracking system. At I/O, the company launched a Health Services API alpha that would let developers get familiar with the new features available on the latest Wear OS.

In addition, Fitbit is building an app for the new Wear that will bring in its tools like workout tracking, health and activity monitoring throughout the day and on-screen celebrations. It's not yet clear if Fitbit's capable sleep-tracking function will be coming to Wear OS, but if it does, it'd give Google's platform an edge over Apple. Since Fitbit uses your heart rate to tell what sleep stage you're in throughout the night, it offers more insight than watchOS, which doesn't interpret your cardio data that way yet.

Other upcoming changes
Some other changes include upcoming refreshes of Google's own apps like Pay, Maps and YouTube Music, and the Assistant. Support for offline music playback (via YouTube Music and Spotify) is coming and Maps is also getting turn by turn navigation on the wrist soon.

Everything Google announced at I/O 2021

Google's Sundar Pichai promised I/O 2021 would be full of new announcements and the company delivered. Across two hours, Google talked about upcoming features for most of its consumer-facing products, including Photos, Maps and Search. We also got a look at the next versions of Android and Wear OS, as well as Google's ongoing work in AI. Add to that some surprises and it was a jam-packed event.

Google, as usual, kicked off I/O by talking up its latest advancements in artificial intelligence. It first detailed LaMDA, a new model the company claimed represents a breakthrough in conversational AI. In one of the more unusual demos of the day, Google showed off LaMDA pretending to be Pluto and then a paper airplane in conversations between it and the company's employees. While it wasn't always eloquent or concise, LaMDA could answer complicated questions about those two topics. LaMDA could one day have significant implications for products like Search and Assistant. The company also showed off an AI-assisted dermatology tool that can provide you information about common skin conditions.

Google devoted an entire section of its keynote to new privacy features coming to its various products. In Photos, for example, the company is adding a dedicated folder for images and video you want to keep private. Content you add to your Locked Folder won't show up when you scroll through your Photos timeline and access requires inputting a passcode. In your account, meanwhile, there's a new option to delete the last 15 minutes of your search history.

Google is simplifying how developers build Android for Cars apps

Google is looking to make it even easier for developers to build Android for Cars apps. The company opened up an Android for Cars app library in the Jetpack tool suite in March, helping developers to bring navigation, parking and electric vehicle apps to Android Auto. The library will also support Android Automotive, so developers will be able to create apps that are compatible with both platforms. As such, developers shouldn't have to allocate as many resources to make sure their apps work on both.

Several early access partners are bringing apps in those categories to Android Automotive, including Chargepoint, Parkwhiz and Plugshare. Google plans to open up the app library to more categories later. Initially, the company only allowed third-party developers to create media and messaging apps for Android for Cars.

Android Automotive is a full infotainment system that doesn't have to rely on a connected Android device. Google says that, by the end of this year, more than 10 car models will support the platform, including vehicles from Volvo, General Motors and Renault. With more cars set to use Automotive, it makes sense that Google wants to help developers build out the app ecosystem.

Google Cast updates make it easier to move audio between devices

Google announced a slew of updates at its I/O developer conference today, covering software for all sorts of devices like phones, wearables, foldables and more. One of these platforms is Android TV, and in addition to a bunch of developer-centric improvements, the company is also introducing new Cast Connect, Stream Transfer and Stream Expansion tools. These should make it easier to play things on Cast devices, once developers build the functionality into their apps.

Cast Connect will let you send content from your phone, tablet or Chrome browser onto an app on Android TV. Right now if you cast to an Android TV device, it's not targeted to specific apps on the bigger screen. This might also allow for some control around what you're casting and possibly some interaction with the TV app.

Meanwhile, Stream Transfer will let you move playback between supported devices and Stream Expansion adds speakers to boost what you're watching or listening to at the moment. That last feature sounds the most useful since it could help those who are hard of hearing or simply need a louder sound system by adding more output devices.

To get developers onboard with the new tools, Google is making the Android 12 Beta 1 available for TV today. It's also introducing the first Google TV emulator running on Android 11, as well as Android TV support for its Firebase Test Lab. The company said some of these features are already available, while the rest are coming soon, though it's not yet clear which ones are here now. With more than 80 million monthly active devices using Android TV, plenty of people could potentially benefit from more useful apps and improvements coming to the platform.

Google is helping developers build Android apps for bigger screens

As usual, Google followed up its big I/O keynote with a quicker session focused specifically on the new tools it'll offer the developer community in the coming months. The entire developer keynote is up on YouTube, but here are a handful of things that caught our eyes.

Google announced a new tool coming that should help it realize the multi-screen vision the company laid out for its new Material You design language. Jetpack Compose is a UI toolkit that should make it easier for developer to build apps that'll work across a wider variety of Android devices, not just phones. Compose was first announced at I/O two years ago, and Google has been developing it in public since then. The stable release is now set for July of this year. Given that Google has always had a challenge making developer build Android apps for larger screen, this could be a crucial tool -- especially given the ever-increasing number of Chromebooks out there running Android apps.

Google discussed security extensively in its main keynote, and the developer keynote revealed some new details about a new security tool for developers called App Check. It'll be out soon in beta as part of the Firebase developer console and it help to identify legitimate traffic from your app. Specifically, it can verify that data coming in to your services is coming from an authorized app and block it from unverified sources. That's not something a user might directly notice, but it does mean that any data a developer needs to keep on its users to keep their app doing what it needs to won't be accessed or compromised.

Google also went deep into its open-source Flutter development kit, talked over the changes coming to Wear OS in more details, and hit on a number of other changes its making to how users will built apps with its platforms. If you want more, the developer keynote is embedded below and you should also turn into the many I/O sessions taking place in the next few days.

Google wants to make shopping easier in Photos and Chrome

Shopping functionality might not be what most people think of when they visit Google, but it's a big part of its business. And that was on display at I/O 2021, with the company devoting a segment of the two-hour event to features that will enhance the shopping experience across its products. In Photos, for example, Google has added a new "Search inside screenshot" Lens prompt. So say you save a photo of Steph Curry, Google Lens will try to find products that match the ones pictured in that image.

In Chrome, meanwhile, Google has added a feature to help you keep track of your pending purchases. Shortly after opening a new tab, you'll see all your open carts in the middle of the page. So if you're in the process of buying something but get distracted, Chrome will be there to remind you you didn't complete a purchase. Pushy yes, but probably not as obnoxious as those emails you get when you abandon a cart.

Google is also expanding its partnership with Shopify. Moving forward, the company plans to make it easier for Shopify merchants, all 1.7 million of them and counting, to feature their products across Google products like Search, YouTube and more. The company will use this information to highlight your best purchase options.

Google is finally bringing YouTube Music to Wear OS

Big changes are coming to the Wear OS platform. Google announced that it developed the next version of Wear OS with Samsung at its I/O developer conference, where it also revealed that it's (finally!) launching a YouTube Music app for the operating system. The tech giant started shutting down the Play Music app back in September in favor of YouTube Music, but Wear OS users lost access to it on their devices weeks earlier than that.

Google provided people a transfer tool to move their tracks from the old app to the new one months before the shutdown. However, it killed off Play Music arguably before its replacement was ready for the masses, even though it's been out for years. Wear OS owners had to wait almost eight months for this announcement, after all, and the app doesn't even have an exact release date yet. Google only said that it's coming out later this year. Meanwhile, Apple Watch users have had access to a YouTube Music app since October 2020, shortly after Play Music's shutdown.

When YouTube Music does come out for Wear OS, people will be able to take advantage of the service's features on their smartwatches. One of those is being able to download music on their devices, enabling playback without WiFi or data connection.

Apple teases a Music announcement as more 'Lossless' clues appear

An Apple teaser and newly discovered clues have reinforced the idea that Apple Music is about to launch a new HiFi tier, MacRumors has reported. On Apple's Music site, there's a 15-second video (bottom) displaying the Apple Music logo and message: "Get ready - music is about to change forever."

In addition, Designer Stijn de Vries discovered a pair of logos within the Apple Music website that show both "Lossless" and "Hi-Res Lossless" branding. Those could be used as badges for songs encoded with lossless audio streaming, as MacRumors points out.

References to Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless music were also discovered yesterday within the source code of the Apple Music web app, as 9to5Mac reported. Those were found next to Dolby Atmos references, meaning that Apple Music may include not only higher-quality music, but 3D surround sound streaming as well.

All of that jibes with past rumors indicating that Apple is going to launch new Music features. The lossless and Dolby Atmos references were previously seen in iOS 14.6 beta code, and the term "lossless" (though not Dolby Atmos) also popped up on Apple Music for Android.

We're also expecting new third-generation AirPods with an in-ear design and removable ear tip options. That rumor is backed up by a number of sources, including reliable Apple manufacturing analyst Ming Chi-Kuo. All this could all pop up as early as tomorrow, May 18th, according to yet another rumor.

A bug let Eufy security camera owners access strangers' feeds

Owners of Anker's Eufy security cameras are running into a serious privacy bug. As 9to5Mac reports, users on Anker's forums and Reddit have found themselves suddenly accessing others' camera feeds, including recordings and even account details. Logging out and in again appears to resolve the issue (as does using HomeKit Secure Video), but this clearly raises concerns that a not-so-scrupulous user might spy on someone else.

Anker confirmed the issue happened in multiple countries and that it was fixed about one hour after it was recognized. The company says a software bug during a server upgrade was the reason, though it didn't offer more details. "We realize that as a security company we didn't do good enough," the company writes while promising to upgrade security measures so this doesn't happen again.

Here's the company's following statement:

"Due to a software bug during our latest server upgrade at 4:50 AM EST today, a limited number (0.001%) of our users were able to access video feeds from other users' cameras. Our engineering team recognized this issue at around 5:30 AM EST, and quickly got it fixed by 6:30AM EST.

The issue affected users at a small rate in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. Users in Europe remain unaffected.

Our customer service team will continue contacting those who were affected. Eufy Baby Monitors, eufy Smart Locks, eufy Alarm System devices and eufy PetCare products remain unaffected.

We realize that as a security company we didn't do good enough. We are sorry we fell short here and are working on new security protocols and measures to make sure that this never happens again."

Apple Music will offer Dolby Atmos and lossless streaming starting next month

After clues in iOS 14.6 beta code and Apple Music for Android, and an intentional tease from the company, Apple has officially announced spatial audio with Dolby Atmos and lossless streaming. After all the hints and rumors, there are two new high-quality music options available through the streaming service. And the best part is Apple Music subscribers will have access to both at no additional cost when they arrive on the service next month.

Apple's AirPods Max are equipped with spatial audio capabilities, but the headphones only work well with your iPhone, iPad or Mac and there hasn't been much compatible content. With the addition of Dolby Atmos to Apple Music, you'll have an immersive option for listening to music akin to what Tidal HiFi and Amazon Music HD (which is also no additional cost as of today) already offer. Both of those services support Dolby Atmos Music and Sony 360 Reality Audio. Apple says the streaming service will automatically play music in Dolby Atmos on all AirPods and Beats earbuds and headphones with an H1 or W1 chip. Ditto for built-in speakers on "the latest versions" of iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Apple promises to make Dolby Atmos content easy to find with curated playlists and special badges. However, the company didn't go into specifics on the size of the music library here. It says "thousands" of songs will be available at launch, but didn't give any numbers. The company did say it's collaborating with Dolby to make it easier for artists, producers and engineers to create music in Dolby Atmos. It's also working with artists and labels to bring existing material to the format. Apple promises more tracks will be added "regularly."

Apple is also making its entire catalog of music available in lossless audio. Lossless streaming uses Apple's ALAC codec (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) at up to 48kHz, while Hi-Resolution Lossless increases the quality to 192kHz. More specifically, Lossless starts out at CD quality 16 bit at 44.1 kHz and goes up to 24-bit/48KHz. Apple says 24 bit at 192kHz is meant for "the true audiophile." For that level of quality, the company warns you'll need some extra gear to make it worthwhile -- like an external USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

The whole idea here is to capture the original detail of the studio recording. "This means Apple Music subscribers will be able to hear the exact same thing that the artists created in the studio," the company explained in a press release. You can access lossless audio by adjusting the audio quality settings in the Apple Music app and opt for different resolutions based on your connection.

Both Dolby Atmos and lossless audio will be available in Apple Music in June.

Apple's latest Pride-themed Watch bands are more representative

Since 2016, Apple has released a limited-edition, Pride-themed Watch band and face, and this year is no exception. The company just announced the 2021 Apple Watch Pride Edition, with two new straps and a watch face that'll be available to everyone through a forthcoming software update.

The first band is a take on the braided solo loop style, which is fitted to your wrist size and has no clasp or buckle. This year's band takes the traditional colors of the Pride rainbow and adds in more pulled from other Pride flags, like light blue, pink, and white for transgender and nonbinary people. It also includes black and brown coloring for the Black and Latinx communities. A new watch face is designed to match this band, with all the colors represented in a weave-like pattern. Like Apple's other braided solo loops, this one will cost $99.

There's also a $49 Pride Edition Nike Sport Loop which consists the six original Pride rainbow colors intermixed with white. There's a special Nike Pride face to go along with this band, as well.

Both bands are on sale now on Apple's website, and they'll be in stores on Tuesday, May 25th. Lest this feel like a purely capitalist play, Apple also notes that it is "building on its long-running financial support" for LGBTQ+ organizations including Encircle, Equality North Carolina, Equality Texas, Gender Spectrum, GLSEN, Human Rights Campaign, National Center for Transgender Equality, PFLAG National, SMYAL and The Trevor Project in the US, as well as ILGA World internationally.

Oculus will soon let you see how silly you look while playing VR games

Fresh off the v28 firmware rollout and introducing features like Air Link and 120Hz support, Oculus has revealed what's next for the platform. Among the latest features is a live overlay, which let you watch yourself using VR apps in real-time.

If you have an iPhone XS or newer, you can add a live feed of yourself on top of whatever you're doing in VR. So, if you've been wondering how you look while playing Beat Saber or swinging a lightsaber in Vader Immortal, you'll soon get to find out.

Oculus will initially grant a small number of users access to Live Overlay as a test feature. It will work with any VR app that supports casting and recording, and you can share videos with the overlay intact. You'll also be able to capture your voice using the Quest's built-in microphone when you're recording or casting video to a web browser.

Also in v29, Oculus is adding a way to see iPhone notifications while using your headset as part of the system-level Infinite Office features. If you have an iPhone 7 or above, you can enable iOS phone notifications. Android support is on the way. Oculus says it's offering users more access and control over files with a revamped files app. In addition, you'll have another way to access the passthrough function so you can see the world around you without having to take off your headset. A passthrough home "eye" icon will be added to the quick settings menu.

Earlier this year, Oculus enabled app sharing and multi-user accounts on more recent headsets. With v29, owners of the original Oculus Quest will be able to use the features too. Meanwhile, Oculus will soon start testing ads for VR experiences in its mobile app. Developers will be able to run ads to help people discover their apps, and you'll have some control over your ad preferences.

Oculus is rolling out firmware v29 gradually, so it could take a little while to reach all users.

Nintendo shows off 'Mario Golf: Super Rush' speed golf and battle royale modes

Ahead of releasing Mario Golf: Super Rush next month, Nintendo has revealed a bit more about what to expect from the game, including the speed golf mode. You and up to four friends will play at the same time. Not only will you try to complete a hole with fewer shots than your opponents, you'll want to do so faster than them as well.

You'll need to sprint to where your ball has landed to take your next shot. There will be pickups on the course, including coins and ones that restore stamina. Each of the 16 characters has their own special dash move to help you get to the ball faster and various attributes, including power, stamina, speed, control and spin.

They also have a special shot ability. Luigi can freeze the ground on impact, while King Bob-omb can spawn bombs in the landing zone. Others smash nearby balls out of the way on impact. PGA Tour 2K21, this ain't.

Mario Golf: Super Rush has a battle royale-style speed golf variant called Battle Golf. The showdown takes place in an arena packed with obstacles and nine holes. The first golfer to capture three holes, by having the lowest stroke count at a given time, will be the winner.

On top of that, there's an RPG mode called Golf Adventure, in which you can level up a rookie Mii character. Coaches can help you improve your technique. You'll also undertake challenges and battle bosses. Yes, in a golf game. Once you feel your Mii has decent enough stats, you'll be able to use them in multiplayer modes.

Nintendo also showed off some other features, including curve and spin shot abilities, a terrain scanner and optional motion controls. Mario Golf: Super Rush is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 25th.

Epic Games sues AR glasses maker Nreal over its name

Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against mixed-reality glasses company Nreal over an alleged trademark infringement. It claims the company's name "looks and sounds virtually identical" to Unreal and said that was "no coincidence." Epic also said in the suit that the two companies are competing in the same market and suggested the similarity could cause confusion.

"Epic has ten registrations for 'Unreal' alone or in connection with another term for a wide range of goods and services including but not limited to software, video games, virtual worlds, and 3D visualizations, animations, and platforms," according to the suit.

Nreal released its Nreal Light mixed-reality glasses in South Korea last year and it plans to launch them in the US this quarter, as The Verge notes. Although Epic doesn't yet have AR hardware of its own, it has shown interest in the AR/VR space. In 2017, Epic released Robo Recall, a virtual reality game it developed with Unreal Engine.

Epic is seeking an injunction that would force Nreal to withdraw its trademark application, as well as unspecified damages. The companies have been battling over the Unreal moniker for a few years. They had been in discussions over a settlement but weren't able to reach an agreement, according to the suit.

Nreal has faced other legal issues in the US. Last year, a court threw out a claim by Magic Leap that a Nreal founder and CEO Chi Xu, a former employee, used "stolen" secrets to help create his company. Epic, of course, is embroiled in another major lawsuit. The third week of its bench trial against Apple is underway.

Hot Wheels' latest RC Cybertruck puts a Cyberquad in your hand for only $100

The Hot Wheels Cybertruck hasn't even shipped to everyone who ordered one last February, but Mattel has already announced a new version going on sale this week. What's different? This year's 1:10 version now includes the Cyberquad bike as part of the set, which can slide neatly into the trunk of the Cybertruck. And this new toy is way cheaper than the original collector's edition -- only $100 for the entire package, going on sale this Friday at

How is it so cheap? Well, this version won't have the removable shell so you can look inside. And it doesn't include the "broken window" decal that was so charming last year. The lighting has also been changed up a bit, and it's half as fast, with a top speed of 12 miles per hour. The ATV is not remote controlled at all, so that certainly helps with keeping the package at a reasonable cost. The Cybertruck will be controlled with a pad designed after the OG Cybertruck's dashboard, also included with the set.

The 2020 Cybertruck was announced at Toy Fair in February 2020 and was delayed to this month. This new one will go on sale at 12pm ET this Friday, will shipment promised by September 15 -- good luck with snagging one, as both of last year's models (the 1:10 and 1:64 sizes) sold out within hours.

Canoo's first consumer 'lifestyle vehicle' will cost almost $35,000

Back in 2019, Canoo had a bold plan to sell a subscription-only EV. Now, however, it appears that plan has been shelved, at least temporarily. The company announced today that the futuristic-looking van, officially called the "Lifestyle Vehicle," will have a starting price of $34,750. The price can be as high as $49,950 before incentives or optional equipment. Starting today, you can reserve one of your own for a $100 deposit. The Lifestyle Vehicle will arrive in 2022.

On top of that, the company also announced that its MPDV (which starts at $33,000) and pickup truck can be reserved for a $100 deposit as well. Deliveries for those vehicles, however, are slated for 2023.

Canoo's Lifestyle Vehicle is available in four trims: Base, Premium, Adventure and Delivery. The Adventure trim features more ground clearance and a "more muscular profile" with enhanced bumpers and the addition of a metal skid plate. According to the company, it'll have up to 300 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of peak motor torque with 250 miles of battery range.

The company had tried to license out its platform to other car makers like Hyundai, maybe even drawing the attention of Apple according to The Verge, but the deal appears to have fallen through.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe is a PHEV for trail hounds

The first car I ever owned was a run-down 1985 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought for $600. The thing was a glorious mess; the only accessory that wasn't analog was the dashboard clock and that never did anything but flash "12:00." But the state of technology has advanced by leaps and bounds since the dark day of the mid-80s and, thankfully, a whole bunch of it has found its way into Jeep's first PHEV, the trail-blazing 2021 Wrangler Limited Sahara 4xe.

The introduction of the 4xe marks another expansion of the Wrangler's drivetrain options. For the 2021 model year, prospective buyers have myriad internal combustion options including a 3.0L V6 diesel, a 3.6L V6 petrol, and a gigantic 6.4L V8. The 4xe on the other hand is powered by a petite 2.0L supercharged I4 and augmented by a pair of electric motor generators driven by a 17kWh battery pack. Together they produce 375 horsepower, 470 lb.-ft and 370 mile range while delivering 49 mpg-e -- nearly double the 22/29 mpg that its ICE variants can muster -- though without help from the e-motor, the 4xe's efficiency drops to around 20 mpg.

The 4xe's primary motor generator sits at the front of the engine block and is used to augment the engine's performance as well as keep the battery pack topped off while driving. The second motor generator sits in front of the transmission with a binary clutch separating the motor from the engine -- where the torque converter normally sits. This is what enables the 4xe to use Electric-Only mode, since there aren't any actual mechanical connections between the two systems aside from this clutch. When the clutch is open, it's electric only. When the clutch is closed, the ICE and EM work in concert. And, interestingly, while it does have a 12V battery to run the vehicle's various accessories, the 4xe does not need a 12V starter motor like its fully-petrol alternatives do, meaning it turns on and off silently like an EV. (Also means that you can run the accessories all day and never worry about running down the powertrain battery since they're all run off the separate 12V, that's clever.)

Those motors are powered by a 400V, 17kWh 96-cell battery pack tucked under the rear seats. It uses an NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) chemistry, the cobalt-heavy predecessor to the NCMA mix that GM's Ultium system employs. And while it can't hit the high-charging speeds that, say, the GM Hummer EV, with its 800V architecture, enjoys, the 4xe's battery is compact enough that it can be fully replenished with 2 hours on a level 2 charger or in 2.5 hours by just driving around at freeway speeds, letting that primary motor generator work its magic. What's more, the 4xe's regenerative braking system can also harvest up to a quarter G of momentum every time the vehicle stops while extending the service life of the XEs brake pads -- double that when 4WD is engaged. There's even a selectable Max Regen mode which is basically regenerative braking in overdrive -- expect less coasting and firmer stops when you've got it engaged.

Since the 4xe is designed to go off-roading and is Trail Rated -- which includes a skid plate and front and rear tow hooks -- the battery pack has been hardened in an aluminum case and waterproofed to endure fording up to 30 inches of water.

Drivers will be able to adjust the interplay between the electric and IC powertrains using a trio of buttons located to the left of the steering column, collectively known as E Selec. Yes, that is spelled correctly. Choose between Hybrid mode, which runs on electric power alone (a whole 20 miles of range!) until the battery is depleted before letting the engine kick in to help, Electric Only mode which is exactly what it sounds like, and eSave which is the opposite of Electric Only -- running on gas power without engaging the electric side. You can very much tell when the electric motor is on, and I don't just mean by the lack of sound. It's like driving two different vehicles. In gas-only mode you feel every ounce of the roughly 4,000-pound vehicle and can hear the superchargers screaming when accelerating hard. Electric only mode makes the Wrangler feel light as a feather and stiff as a board but barely gets me from my house to the far side of the Bay Bridge before running out of juice.

The 4xe will come in three trim levels: The Sahara 4xe, which is what I drove, starts at $47,995 (though the one in the video will set you back $54,000 with its various add-on packages); the stepped up Rubicon 4xe starts at $51,695, and the top of the line High Altitude 4xe goes for $53,815. Those are quite a bit pricier than the $28,900 that this year's ICE Wranglers start at. Buyers will have the choice of ten exterior colors, two interior color/material alternatives, and the option for a manually-convertible soft top, 3-piece hard top or "one-touch" power top, which is a soft top sliding over hard side and rear windows. Side note: why is the soft top so damn difficult to put on and take off. I feel like I need an engineering degree and three lifelines to get this thing correctly installed with any regularity.

The 4xe stays true to the Wrangler style with a boxy exterior and tall ride height -- you'd be hard pressed to spot the difference between the PHEV and an ICE version from any appreciable distance. One design flair I very much appreciated however is that both the power outlet and fuel filler port are located on the same side of the vehicle -- the power outlet sits in front of the driver's door, the gas port is behind the rear passenger's door -- which means that if you can remember where either of them is, you will know where both of them are, saving you time and embarrassment when trying to navigate unfamiliar gas stations and charging centers.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G Launch Expected Soon as It Receives Bluetooth Certification

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G launch can be expected soon as the phone received certification from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) on Monday. The smartphone has so far been a part of the rumour mill and is speculated to come in 4G and 5G models. Both models are expected to have a similar list of specifications, though with distinct chipsets to offer different network capabilities. The Samsung Galaxy A22 is rumoured to have a waterdrop-style display notch and a triple rear camera setup. Samsung is also expected to use the same design language that it offered with the Galaxy A32 and the Galaxy A52 recently.

The Bluetooth SIG website has listed the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G in five distinct variants, with model numbers SM-A226B-DS, SM-A226B-DSN, SM-A226B, SM-A226BR-DSN, and SM-A226BR-N. These could be associated with the models coming to different regions. The listing, which was initially reported by tipster Mukul Sharma, also suggests support for Bluetooth v5.0 with the Galaxy A22 5G. The listing does not provide any further details about the smartphone.

Nevertheless, some renders allegedly related to the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G surfaced online recently, suggesting that its design could be very similar to what we have seen on the Galaxy A32. The leaked renders also suggested that the new Samsung phone could come in Black, Green, Purple, and White colours.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G specifications (expected)
In addition to the renders, the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G specifications also surfaced online a few days ago. The phone is said to have a 6.4-inch full-HD+ display and come with an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC. It is also rumoured to have a 5,000mAh battery and include 15W fast charging support. Further, the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G is said to weigh 205 grams and measure 9mm in thickness.

Sharp's powerful Aquos R6 features a huge one-inch camera sensor

We don't hear much about Sharp's smartphones these days, largely because they're only available in Japan and a select few other regions. However, the company has just unveiled a new model, the Aquos R6, that's loaded with interesting tech, as Engadget Japan has reported. That includes a Leica-branded camera with a very large sensor that raises a few questions about Leica's relationship with Huawei.

Sharp collaborated with Leica to create a 20-megapixel camera with a 1-inch sensor, one of the largest available on any smartphone. It worked with Leica on the entire camera system, including the sensor (likely built by Sony), 19mm f/1.9 wide-angle lens (35mm equivalent), and image quality features. The 7-element lens design even earned Leica's vaunted "Summicron" branding, which supposedly lets you shoot with less distortion. However, the Aquos R6 has just a single rear camera, so zooming (from wide to telephoto) is done digitally, not optically.

Sharp's collaboration with Leica is rather interesting, because rumors cropped up yesterday that Leica was ending its relationship with Huawei, though both companies previously denied this. Given the new Sharp collaboration, however, Leica is no longer exclusive to Huawei anymore, at the very least. Whether it will also work with other camera companies like Xiaomi, as is rumored, remains to be seen.

The Aquos R6 has a screen to match the camera, too. The 6.6-inch, 2,730 x 1,260 HDR screen puts out up to 2,000 nits of brightness -- the highest available on any smartphone, Sharp claims. To hit that number, Sharp said it developed the OLED display using its IGZO tech, though it's not clear exactly how that works. To avoid rapid battery drain from such a bright display, Sharp supposedly developed a system to reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz when a still image is displayed.

Samsung teases its next generation of flexible displays

Samsung used its first-mover advantage in foldables to establish a lead in the fledgling category. Last winter, it confirmed its commitment to folding devices by promising new launches that would make the premium tech more accessible. Today, we're getting a peep at the future foldables it has in store, including larger flexible displays for phones and tablets. It showcased the prototypes at the Display Week 2021 event, according to SamMobile.

Among the concepts was a double-folding OLED panel (pictured above) that can be used like a smartphone. When unfolded, the screen has a maximum size of 7.2-inches, which puts it between the main display on the Galaxy Z Flip (6.7-inches) and the Galaxy Fold 2 (7.6-inches).

Ditching folds, Samsung also showed off a Slidable OLED display that extends horizontally. As a sign of the innovation in the space, we've already seen similar devices with slide-out and rollable screens teased by TCL and LG (before it gave up on its mobile phone business). While neither of those have launched yet, China's Oppo has revealed a working prototype in its X 2021 rollable phone, which can switch between a conventional 6.7-inch screen and a larger 7.4-inch screen.

Indicating that we may soon get a folding Galaxy tablet, Samsung unveiled a 17-inch foldable panel at the event. With a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded, the display is larger than the 13.3-inch screen on Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold foldable PC.

Sensex Rallies Over 300 Points; SBI, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank Top Gainers

The domestic stock markets have opened strong in line with the positive cues from the global front. Wall Street had closed higher over the weekend and Asian markets are looking up in early trading. At 9:17 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 49,026.33, higher by 303 points or 0.59 per cent and the NSE Nifty was at 14,752.30, up 73.05 points or 0.51 per cent, led by gains in financial stocks.
The broader markets are also trading firm, with the BSE Midcap index adding 0.2 per cent and BSE Smallcap index gaining 0.6 per cent.

Asian shares edged cautiously higher on Monday catching the tailwind from a bounce on Wall Street and ahead of what are expected to be upbeat readings on the Chinese economy, though any disappointment could quickly chill the mood.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan firmed 0.2 per cent, nudging further away from a four-month trough hit last week. Japan's Nikkei gained 0.4 per cent, having also touched its lowest since early January last week.

Wall Street closed higher in a broad rally on Friday, an upbeat conclusion to whipsaw week of buying and selling as signs of a rebounding economy squared off against mounting inflation jitters. The Dow Jones rose 1.06 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 1.49 per cent and Nasdaq Composite added 2.32 per cent.

On the earnings front, Bharti Airtel, Federal Bank, Colgate Palmolive, Gland Pharma and Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company will declate their results during the day.

Financial stocks are in the limelight this morning. SBI, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC and HDFC Bank have gained 1-2 per cent each to top the gainers list on the BSE.

Mamata Banerjee At CBI Office As 2 Ministers Face Arrest In Bribery Case

New Delhi: Mamata Banerjee's ministers Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee were taken to the CBI office in Kolkata this morning and are likely to be arrested in the Narada bribery case. In a snowballing Bengal-Centre clash, the Chief Minister also arrived at the CBI office shortly afterwards.
Firhad Hakim, taken away by central security personnel from his home just after 9 am, alleged that he was being arrested without proper sanction. Central forces also went to the homes of Trinamool MLA Madan Mitra and former Trinamool leader Sovan Chatterjee and took them to the CBI office. Ms Chatterjee, Kolkata's former mayor and senior minister, quit the Trinamool in 2019, joined the BJP but quit that party too this March.

Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar had earlier sanctioned CBI investigations against the four.

The CBI will present a chargesheet against them before a special court and could seek custody. If not, the four may have to go to police lock-up until bail is granted.

The Speaker of the state assembly has to sanction the prosecution of MLAs. But in this case, the CBI did not ask the Bengal assembly Speaker for sanction but approached the Governor instead, in January. The Governor said he had the authority to grant sanction not because the four leaders were MLAs but because they were ministers sworn in by him in 2011.

All four were ministers in the previous Mamata Banerjee government when the Narada bribery tapes were shot in 2014. Firhad Hakim and Subrata Mukherjee were sworn in by the Governor as members of the new Mamata Banerjee cabinet after she won a third straight term in last month's Bengal election.

The case involves a sting operation by the Narada news portal, in which Trinamool leaders were on camera accepting bribes.

A journalist from Delhi came to Kolkata, posed as a businessman planning to invest in Bengal, gave wads of cash to seven Trinamool MPs, four ministers, one MLA and a police officer as bribe and taped the entire operation.

India's Daily Covid Cases Fall Below 3 Lakh, First Since April 21: 10 Points

New Delhi: India's daily Covid cases dropped below the 3 lakh-mark for the first time since April 21 with 2.81 lakh fresh infections reported in the last 24 hours. 4,106 Covid patients have died since yesterday.

Here is your ten-point cheat sheet on this big story:

The country has been recording more than 3,000 deaths every day due to Covid since April 28. More than 2.7 lakh people have died so far. The positivity rate this morning stood at 17.88 per cent.

While vaccine shortage has dampened the world's biggest inoculation drive, launched in January, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said that over 51 lakh doses of vaccines will be received by the states and union territories in the next three days.

Many nations have been sending medical supplies after India's healthcare system was burdened by the second Covid wave that led to a deluge of distress messages. "11,058 oxygen concentrators; 13,496 oxygen cylinders; 19 oxygen generation plants; 7,365 ventilators, 5.3L Remdesivir vials" have been transported or delivered to states between April 27 and May 15, the government has said.

An anti-coronavirus drug developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) - called 2-deoxy-D-glucose or 2-DG - will be launched today, with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh distributing around 10,000 doses to some hospitals in the national capital.

Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have extended curbs to check Covid spread over the weekend. While Delhi is witnessing a recovery after reporting over 25,000 daily cases earlier this month, Punjab says it's still awaiting a drop in the cases.

The government has shared new SOPs to tackle the spread in rural parts, which have been hit hard by the second wave of Covid. Village-level surveillance, tele-consultation with community health officers, and training in rapid antigen testing are among the several areas of focus.

Bharat Biotech, whose Covaxin is one of the three vaccines cleared for emergency use, on Sunday said its vaccine is effective against B.1.167 strain of Covid detected in India and the UK variant of the virus B.1.1.7.

Even as the recommended gap between two doses of the Serum Institute of India's Covishield has been increased, those who have already got slots on CoWin won't be inconvenienced, the centre said on Sunday.

After visuals of dead bodies floating in River Ganga of suspected Covid patients triggered shock and anger in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, police units in different districts across UP have stepped up patrolling by the banks. The centre has told states to prevent dumping of bodies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday dialled up chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Puducherry to discuss Covid situation with them.

Bitcoin Price Slides Further After Elon Musk Tweets

The price of Bitcoin traded below $45,000 (roughly Rs. 33 lakhs) on Sunday after a tweet by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, an outspoken supporter of cryptocurrency, suggested Tesla may be considering or may have sold off its bitcoin holdings.

Musk's tweet was in response to an unverified Twitter account called @CryptoWhale, which said, "Bitcoiners are going to slap themselves next quarter when they find out Tesla dumped the rest of their #Bitcoin holdings. With the amount of hate @elonmusk is getting, I wouldn't blame him...".

Musk replied "indeed" without specifying whether Tesla had sold off its Bitcoin (price in India) holdings or that he simply agreed with the sentiment that he faced criticism.

On May 12, Musk said Tesla will no longer accept Bitcoin for car purchases, citing long-brewing environmental concerns for a swift reversal in the company's position on the cryptocurrency.

The Tesla boss' tweets, which had helped drive some of the gains in Bitcoin in recent months, last week triggered a 17 percent slide in the value of the cryptocurrency when he said his company's customers would no longer be able to use Bitcoin to buy its cars.

Musk's decision to stop accepting Bitcoin as payment over environmental concerns has been well-received by some of Tesla's investors, offering a warning to corporate peers mulling a dabble with the cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin is created when high-powered computers compete against other machines to solve complex mathematical puzzles, an energy-intensive process.

More than half a dozen investors in the electric vehicle maker contacted by Reuters said they were happy with Musk's decision on Bitcoin.

"Both Have Failed...": Rahul Gandhi's Double Swipe At Ventilators, PM

New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ventilators - essential medical equipment for Covid patients - bought by the PM CARES fund, saying both were "overly false propaganda", had "failed to do their job" and were "difficult to find, when needed".
"Ventilators bought by PM CARES and the Prime Minister have many similarities. Both are full of false propaganda, both have failed to do their jobs and, in times of need, both are difficult to find," Mr Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

The Congress leader's swipe comes amid a row over reports suggesting ventilators bought by the centre with PM CARES fund and supplied to a state-run hospital in Punjab's Faridkot have been left unused because of technical glitches.

The centre has hit back at these reports, calling them "unfounded" and alleging it is the lack of infrastructure at the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital that is to blame.

The central government - facing fierce and widespread criticism over its handling of the pandemic, and particularly the second wave, has been providing states and union territories with essential medical devices, including ventilators, since April 2020, the Union Health Ministry said.

The ventilators in question were supplied by Bharat Electronics Limited and AgVa.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered an immediate audit of the process of installing and operating the ventilators, and directed healthcare workers be trained in its use, if necessary.

Mr Gandhi has been relentless in his attacks on the Narendra Modi government over the pandemic management issue; on Sunday he slammed the centre over reports of people being arrested in Delhi for allegedly putting up posters critical of the centre's handling of the crisis.

Last week too he accused the Prime Minister of "going missing".

"The Prime Minister is also missing, with vaccines, oxygen and medicines. All that remain is Central Vista project, GST on medicines and the Prime Minister's photos here and there," he tweeted.

India has reported over three lakh infections a day for over 20 consecutive days in April-May; today was the first time since April 21 that daily numbers were below that mark.

2.81 lakh new cases and over 4,000 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours.

The flood of cases has overwhelmed healthcare systems, leaving hospitals full, and medicines and oxygen in short supply. The shortage of vaccines has made things worse, as the country looks to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible.

Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and UP have extended curbs to check Covid spread over the weekend.

Prime Minister Modi on Sunday dialled up chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Puducherry to discuss Covid situation with them.

Tesla Crash Victim Lauded 'Full Self-Driving' in TikTok Videos

A Tesla car driver killed in a recent accident in California praised the automaker's "full self-driving" features, and posted videos on his apparent TikTok account, in which he appeared to drive with his hands off the wheel.

On May 5, a Tesla Model 3 crashed into an overturned truck on a highway in Fontana, killing the Tesla driver and injuring the truck driver and a motorist who had stopped to help him.

The Associated Press news agency cited police as saying a preliminary investigation had determined the Tesla's driver assistant system Autopilot was engaged prior to the crash.

But in a correction issued late on Friday, police said, "There has not been a final determination made as to what driving mode the Tesla was in."

Two videos of a man driving with his hands off the wheel were posted on the alleged TikTok account of the victim, 35-year-old Steven Hendrickson of Running Springs in California.

"What would do I do without my full self-driving Tesla after a long day at work," said a message on one. "Coming home from LA after work, thank god, self-drive," said a comment on another video, adding, "Best car ever!"

LG's 2021 soundbars arrive in the US starting at $179

LG has announced the pricing and availability of its 2021 soundbar lineup for the US. Since the models play audio from televisions via TV Sound Mode Share, you can enjoy the benefits of LG TVs' AI Sound Pro feature. The capability uses artificial intelligence to analyze and automatically adjust sounds, depending on the content genre (news, music or cinema) you're listening to. Most of the soundbars in the lineup are now available from retailers, including the most expensive options: the SP9YA and the SP8YA.

Both models are compatible with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Siri, enabling voice control. They also work with Apple's AirPlay 2, so you can stream, control and share content directly from an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac. Another common feature between the two is AI Room calibration, which uses spatial awareness technology to optimize sound output for any room the device is in. The SP9YA (520W, 5.1.2 channel) and the SP8YA (440W, 3.1.2 channel) will set you back $999 and $799, respectively.

As you probably expect, the two most expensive models support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, thanks to their up-firing speakers that make 3D audio experiences possible. If that's the main feature you're after, though, you can also consider the cheaper SPD7Y that has the same capability. All three feature 4K pass-through with Dolby Vision, as well. The SPD7Y (380W, 3.1.2 channel) soundbar will only cost you $399, but it won't be available until mid-June.

Finally, the SP7Y (440W, 5.1 channel) and SP2 (100W, 2.1 channel) models are now available for purchase for $449 and $179, respectively. All soundbars except the SP2 support Hi-Res Audio and are capable of providing lossless playback at 24bit/192kHz for the SP9YA and at 24bit/96kHz for the SP8YA, SP7Y and SPD7Y. In addition to these five soundbars, LG will also be releasing the SN11RG, SN10Y and GX sound bars throughout 2021.

Twitter's subscription service might cost $3 per month

Twitter's expected subscription service might have a name and a price. Code sleuth Jane Manchun Wong says she has found resources suggesting the service will be called Blue and start at $3 per month. Your outlay would get you a handful of previously leaked features, including Undo Tweets and Collections that let you organize saved posts.

The service may include multiple tiers that deliver extra features, Wong added. She suggested the more expensive option might include a clutter-free reading interface from Twitter's recent Scroll acquisition.

Twitter declined to comment to Engadget.

If accurate, the strategy wouldn't be surprising.Twitter would set a relatively low price to court as many enthusiasts as possible, but entice the most devoted fans willing to pay more. Along with Tip Jar, Blue would be part of a broader effort to reduce Twitter's dependence on ads and steady its income. Whether or not it works is another matter, of course -- many are used to Twitter being free, and there's no certainty that even frequent users will pay to upgrade their social network experience.

Android 12 might include big changes to notifications and widgets

It's no secret that Google will talk about Android 12 at its I/O 2021 conference, but it might be clearer as to what you can expect at the virtual event. Jon Prosser's Front Page Tech has posted a video that appears to not only show the previously leaked visual overhaul, but hints at some new functional changes. Most notably, Android 12 would revamp notifications with grouping that tells you the number of waiting alerts and a lock screen "pill" that shows what you've missed.

You'd also see a raft of new widgets and buttons, including new clock and weather options.

The presentation might also provide more insights into Android 12's reported visual refresh. On top of the rounded corners, you'd see a much more fluid look with loads of transitions and effects. Google would seemingly be focused on giving its stock operating system a level of polish normally reserved for third-party vendors.

There's no guarantee you'll see this during Google's I/O stream. It comes soon after a claimed Pixel 6 leak that would include a radical, three-tone redesign with a camera bump that runs the entire width of the phone -- this one-two leak combo is a lot to handle. If this is authentic, though, Google would be bent on shaking up Android's look and feel after years of relatively conservative tweaks.

'Final Fantasy XIV Online' Endwalker expansion arrives on November 23rd

Endwalker, Final Fantasy XIV Online's fourth expansion pack, is coming out on November 23rd. Square Enix has revealed its release date at Digital Fan Festival 2021, where director Naoki Yoshida has also announced that the expansion is now available for pre--order. The gaming giant first revealed that Endwalker is coming out this fall during an event for the PS5 beta of the game back in February. Now, we finally have an exact release date and a full cinematic trailer featuring a new theme song composed by Masayoshi Soken (FFXIV's lead composer) that Square Enix has debuted at the festival, as well.

Square Enix has also revealed the second job -- the first one, Sage, was previously announced -- that will be introduced with Endwalker at the event. The scythe-wielding "Repear" can deal damage with melee attacks and summon avatars while fighting in close-quarter combat. In addition, the company has announced that male Viera will be added as a new playable race and has given fans a glimpse of all the other new content they can expect. There are new cities, areas and towns to explore, new tribes to encounter and new threats to overcome.

Endwalker is now available for pre-order from Square Enix's website, the PlayStation Store and Steam. The standard edition will set players back $40, while the digital collector's edition with a bonus mount, minion and weapon will cost them $60. Players who pre-order the expansion will get early access, which is tentatively scheduled for November 19th. Finally, a collector's box with physical merch, including art prints, a paladin figure, a plush and a pin will be exclusively available from the Square Enix store and will cost buyers $140 or more.

AT&T and Discovery may combine content to take on Disney+ and Netflix

AT&T and Discovery are normally foes in the media world, but they might soon forge an alliance to stand a better chance in streaming. Bloomberg sources claim the two companies are in talks to "combine content assets" and give themselves a better chance at competing with the likes of Disney+ and Netflix. The terms aren't available and might change, but it'd be an unusual shift for AT&T after spending years building up a monolithic content library through WarnerMedia.

There's no certainty the talks will lead to a deal, according to the tipsters. Both AT&T and Discovery have declined to comment.

A content union between AT&T and Discovery would be unusual, but could make sense given the streaming media landscape. Although HBO Max is growing faster than expected, it's still eclipsed by incumbents like Netflix. Discovery content might give you a reason to tune in, at least if you're a fan of cooking and reality shows.

Any mutual sharing would help Discovery, too. Its Discovery+ service is young and, by its nature, limited to a relatively small selection of shows. Access to some WarnerMedia programming could make a Discovery+ subscription more appealing, although it's safe to say AT&T would limit what it offers to avoid undermining HBO Max.

Tesla's Model S Plaid may pack a retractable spoiler

It's no secret that Tesla's Model S Plaid should be fast, but there are now hints that Tesla might tweak the design to handle that added performance. As Electrek has learned, The Kilowatts have spotted a Model S prototype (most likely the Plaid or Plaid+) with a retractable spoiler built into the trunk. The concept of an extending wing isn't new for sports cars, but this is an electric luxury sedan -- it must be fast if the weight of the car isn't enough to keep it firmly planted.

Tesla has made ambitious performance claims for its tri-motor Model S variants. The 'standard' Plaid model is expected to reach a 200MPH top speed, accelerate to 60MPH in just under two seconds, and can reportedly complete a quarter mile in slightly over 9.2 seconds. The Plaid+ should be be even faster off the line.

There's no certainty either of the finished Plaid models will reach drivers with retractable spoilers built-in. A lot could happen between now and the base Plaid's late summer launch, let alone the mid-2022 debut of the Plaid+ variant. However, the test vehicle suggests that Tesla is determined to claim a performance advantage over rivals, and it's not leaning solely on the new Roadster to make that happen.

Clubhouse will make its Android app available worldwide in a week

Clubhouse's fledgling Android app will soon be much easier to find. TechCrunch reports that Clubhouse will make the Android version of its drop-in voice chat app available worldwide within a week. It'll reach Brazil, Japan and Russia on May 18th, with India and Nigeria getting their first look three days later. Everyone around the world will have access by the afternoon of May 21st.

The startup started beta testing its Android app in the US on May 9th, just a few months after beginning development. The iPhone release has been available since March 2020.

There's a strong incentive for Clubhouse to expand quickly, even if its Android app is still in testing. Facebook, Twitter and other internet giants are rolling out Clubhouse-like features in a bid to cut the app's momentum and keep users on their social platforms. This could keep new users joining Clubhouse where they'd otherwise be tempted to stick to incumbent social networks.

Mooer crams a drum machine, effects and a looper into a six-string guitar

Mooer Audio has built much of its reputation on budget guitar effects pedals, but now it's trying something different: stuffing much of its digital know-how into one instrument. Guitar World reports that Mooer is readying the GTRS S800 Intelligent Guitar, a six-stringer that includes 126 effects, a drum machine and an 80-second looper. You might not need much else to create a full performance, at least in some circumstances.

The company isn't clear on just how you access all those features, although they appear to revolve around a "Super-Knob." You can also expand the guitar's features through both a GTRS mobile app and an optional GWF4 wireless footswitch. It will offer Bluetooth for wireless connections and should last up to 15 hours on standby thanks to the built-in 4,000mAh battery.

Mooer hasn't discussed pricing or ship dates, although it's planning to crowdfund the S800 through Indiegogo in the near future. This is bound to cost more than some guitars, although Mooer's historically aggressive pricing could make it easier to justify. The value might hinge on the quality of all those digital tools. You could save serious money if you don't have to buy a dedicated drum machine or looper, but we wouldn't be surprised if was easier in many cases to purchase separate equipment.

Samsung's leaked Galaxy A22 may be its most affordable 5G phone to date

Samsung brought its prices for 5G phones down to Earth when it unveiled the Galaxy A32 earlier in the year, but now it's poised to make fast wireless entirely commonplace. Frequent tipster Ishan Agarwal has given 91mobiles what appear to be press images and specs for the Galaxy A22 5G, an even lower-priced device. The budget 5G phone wouldn't stand out by itself with its plastic body, three rear cameras (48MP, 5MP and 2MP) and teardrop selfie camera notch -- instead, the specs would help it attract buyers.

The Galaxy A22 5G will reportedly run on a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip and use a 6.4-inch (if 1080p) LCD screen to keep costs down, although it would have a sizeable 5,000mAh battery. You'd have a potentially more powerful overall phone by settling for the LTE variant, though, as you'd get an AMOLED display and a 2MP fourth rear camera in return for the slower wireless tech.

Agarwal didn't learn price and availability for either A22 model. It's safe to assume the new handset will undercut the $280 official price of the Galaxy A32 5G if and when it arrives in the US, though, and that's before Samsung's typically aggressive discounts. You can already get the A32 5G for $205 on sale -- an A22 could easily sell for less than $200. That could make 5G accessible to even more people, especially in the US and other countries where non-Samsung Android brands tend to struggle.

Sega considers reviving classics like 'Crazy Taxi' and 'Jet Set Radio'

Sega is no stranger to resurrecting classic franchises, but it might be ramping up its nostalgia mining before long. IGN reports that Sega is considering revivals of several old but well-known game series after "careful examination," according to a SegaSammy results presentation. Brands like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Fighter are all options, and they could anything from simple remasters through to remakes and full-fledged reboots.

The presentation also talked about a mysterious "Super Game" that should be available by the company's fiscal 2026.

There's no guarantee you'll see a brand new Crazy Taxi or a 4K Jet Set Radio refresh. Some of the franchises in the list, such as Rez and Streets of Rage, haven't been languishing for very long if at all. Still, this shows that Sega wants to make better use of its catalog besides obvious go-tos like Sonic and Persona.

Apple Stores in the US will keep mask mandates in place, for now

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, Apple's retail operation has adjusted to changing situations worldwide, but it isn't changing direction based on the latest CDC public health recommendations. According to Bloomberg, it has informed US retail stores that for now, mask mandates and other COVID-19 procedures will remain in place, even as more people in the country are getting vaccinated.

That is in line with some retailers like Target and CVS, while others like Walmart and Trader Joe's have already dropped nationwide mask requirements. Apple's policies can also be flexible to local situations, as 9to5Mac notes that as the number of cases in Michigan rose over recent weeks, stores there were closed and then reopened as Express locations. Apple experimented with the format late last year, where stores are walled off with windows where customers are served one at a time. As the pandemic (hopefully) continues to wane, it will be interesting to see which policies are rolled back -- and when -- and which ones stick around for good.

Hero MotoCorp To Re-Start Operations In Select Plants

India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by volume, Hero MotoCorp is gearing up to gradually resume operations by starting single shift production at three of its manufacturing plants, Gurugram and Dharuhera in Haryana and at Hardwar in Uttarakhand from May 17, 2021. In addition to producing for the domestic market in India, these plants will also have enhanced focus on catering to the global business markets across the world. According to a press statement from Hero MotoCorp, the company continues to monitor the situation closely and the remaining manufacturing plants and other facilities will also open up gradually.

According to the company, with a concerted vaccination drive across the organisation, more than 90 per cent of Hero MotoCorp employees above the age of 45 have already been vaccinated. Strict safety and hygiene protocols are in place at all plant locations and offices in preparation for the gradual resumption of operations. Hero MotoCorp had halted the plant operations temporarily in a staggered manner for four days from April 22-May 2, which was then extended till May 16. All corporate offices of the company have already been in work from home mode.

In April 2021, Hero MotoCorp recorded a month-on-month (MoM) decline in sales of 35.47 per cent selling 3,72,285 units as compared to 5,76,957 units sold in March 2021. The shutdown across Hero MotoCorp's plants was reflected in the monthly sales in April 2021, with Bajaj overtaking Hero in overall motorcycle sales. With the ongoing second wave of the pandemic raging across the country, sales in May and June are also expected to be lower than expected, with a recovery only expected by Q3 of 2021-22.

Lockdown In Bengal For 2 Weeks From Tomorrow, Essential Services Allowed

Kolkata: The West Bengal government today announced that the state will go under a complete lockdown for two weeks starting tomorrow. Looking to curb the spread of COVID-19 infections, all offices and educational institutions will be shut down. Even transport services, including Kolkata Metro, will come to a halt, the government has said.
Only emergency services will be allowed, the state's notification says, adding that groceries and shops selling essential items will stay open between 7 am to 10 am.

Interestingly, sweetmeat vendors will be allowed to function between 10 am and 5 pm. Similarly, petrol pumps will stay open and so will banks, although only between 10 am to 2 pm.

While industries will be closed, tea gardens will be allowed to function but only at 50 per cent strength.

No cultural, political, academic, administrative, or religious events and functions will be allowed in the state during the lockdown and no outdoor congregations will be permitted between 9 pm and 5 am, the government has said.

"No more than 50 people allowed in wedding functions," West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said today.

The state reported 20,846 fresh Covid cases and 136 deaths related to the disease yesterday. The number of active cases has increased by 1,579, too.

The state elected a new government only recently, following a long eight-phase election that saw hectic campaigning. Many see the spike in Covid cases in the state as a direct result

Mamata Banerjee's Brother Dies Of Covid-Related Complications

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's brother Ashim Banerjee died of Covid-related complications at a hospital in Kolkata this morning. He was 60.
"He had tested positive for COVID-19 and was undergoing treatment," Dr Alok Roy, chairman of Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata, was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The last rites will be conducted this afternoon as per Covid protocols.

West Bengal reported 20,846 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the state's total caseload to over 10.94 lakh. 136 patients died in the same period.

Bengal is among the 12 states that cumulatively account for 79.7 per cent of India's total active cases, the Union Health Ministry had said on Friday.

India added 3.26 lakh new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases in the country to 2.43 crore. 3,890 more patients lost their battle to the deadly virus.

Arvind Kejriwal Announces Delhi Oxygen Concentrator Banks, Home Delivery

New Delhi: Oxygen concentrator banks have been set up in every district in Delhi to give a boost to the fight against coronavirus, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said today. Coronavirus patients in home isolation can ask for home delivery of these oxygen concentrators at their doorstep.
"From today, we are starting a very important service - we're setting up oxygen concentrator banks. In every district, there will be a bank with 200 oxygen concentrators. It has been seen that Covid patients often need to get admitted to ICUs when they're not given medical oxygen when needed. Many patients sometimes die. We have set up these banks to fulfill these gaps," Arvind Kejriwal said this afternoon in a televised briefing.

"If any patient - in home isolation - needs medical oxygen, our teams will reach at their doorstep within two hours. One person - aware of the technical know-how- will be a part of the team to help the patient and their families," he added.

Patients who have been discharged from hospitals but still need medical oxygen can reach too.

"Our doctors will be in touch with the patients till they recover so that if they need to be hospitalised, timely action can be taken," Mr Kejriwal said, underlining that any patient can dial up the helpline number - 1031- to get added to the list of patients isolated at their homes.

"However, our team will make sure that you're actually in need," the Chief Minister stressed.

Distress messages from Delhi's hospitals for medical oxygen in the last few weeks had caught global attention as the city saw a record spike in Covid infections.

The city's oxygen crisis was also discussed in Supreme Court and Delhi High Court during marathon hearings and the centre was finally told to make sure that the national capital gets 700 Metric Tonnes every day.

Earlier this week, the state government said the national capital was finally witnessing a drop in cases.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said: "Today, we have seen a further drop in Covid cases. Delhi reported nearly 6,500 infections as compared to about 8,500 cases yesterday. The positivity rate stands at 11 per cent, as compared to 12 per cent yesterday."

Augmented Reality for Surgery: Doctors Perform Minimally Invasive Spinal Procedure With AR Headset

A posterior lumbar interbody fusion involving the addition of bone graft to an area of the spine was a fairly long and invasive procedure until now. However, Dr Kornelis Poelstra and his team, in partnership with The Nevada Spine Clinic, have accomplished a feat that may reduce the time it took for the surgery to under two hours. Recently, the team completed the first posterior lumbar fusion procedure on a patient using a combination of Medtronic's Mazor X robotic platform integrated with Augmedics' newly FDA-approved xvision.

It involves adding bone graft to the spine to ensure a biological response, leading to the growth of the bone between two vertebral elements. The procedure, which otherwise took nearly six to seven hours, was completed on this patient just under two hours. The surgeons used the xvision headset in tandem with the Mazor X robot to perform the surgery.

The reason it took less time was because the xvision headset allowed the team to more precisely identify and pinpoint the spot to place the implants. In this particular case, a proprietary superalloy MoRe (Molybdenum-Rhenium) lower-profile 4.5mm rod, paired with the MiRusEuropa Pedicle Screw System, was placed, according to a report on the Med-tech news.

Before undertaking the procedure, an orthopaedic and neurological spine surgeon uses the robotic platform to pre-plan the exact placement of the implant and screw system and that's what makes the process efficient and reduces the time it otherwise took to perform such a surgery.

After this stage, Dr Poelstra's xvision headset takes him to a world of augmented reality, where he follows his 3D anatomical blueprint created through the use of the software beforehand.

The new procedure has multiple benefits such as being minimally invasive and exceedingly efficient. It also helps the team place the implants with advanced precision, thereby also reducing time spent under anaesthesia in the operating room.

Dr Poelstra, who has a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, is the front and centre of the design and development of spinal robotics that assist in spinal fusions. He has performed more than 1,000 complex robotic procedures.

Chip Shortage To Hit About 100,000 Mazda Vehicles In 2021

Mazda Motor Corp said on Friday it expects a semiconductor crunch to affect around 100,000 of the Japanese automaker's vehicles globally during the fiscal year. However, Mazda will fully leverage available inventory to minimize the hit to about 70,000 wholesale units, it said in a statement.

The worldwide shift to remote work and learning during the pandemic had boosted demand for laptops and other gadgets, exacerbating a global chip shortage.

The shortfall will cost automakers $110 billion in lost revenues this year, up from a prior estimate of $61 billion, consulting firm AlixPartners said, forecasting the crisis will hit the production of 3.9 million vehicles.

Automobiles depend on chips for everything from computer management of engines for better fuel economy to driver-assistance features such as emergency braking.

Codenamed Mark 2, the long-range electric scooter is expected to be quick, with a top speed of 100 kmph, with claimed acceleration from 0 to 50 kmph in just 3.6 seconds. According to a press statement, Simple Energy has now developed the production model of its flagship scooter, which will be launched on India's Independence Day this year. The Mark 2 will have a 4.8 kWh lithium-ion battery with a claimed range of 240 km in eco mode.

The Simple Energy electric scooter will feature a mid-drive motor along with a removable battery and futuristic design. Amazon Cancels One-Month Prime Subscription in India Due to RBI Mandate, Discontinues Free Trial as Well

Amazon will no longer offer monthly Prime membership in India. Moving forward, the e-commerce giant will only be offering three-month or annual Prime memberships. The Amazon Prime subscription amount begun at Rs. 129 per month, but this starting pack has been removed to adhere with new Reserve Bank of India mandate. RBI's new guideline asks banks and financial institutions to implement an additional factor of authentication (AFA) for processing recurring online transactions. The deadline for implementation of this new mandate has been set for September 30.

Amazon has updated its support page to reflect the removal of monthly membership of Amazon Prime subscription. Additionally, since April 27, Amazon has also temporarily discontinued new member sign-ups for Amazon Prime free trial as well. At the moment, if a user is looking to buy Amazon Prime membership or renew it, they can only purchase three month or annual subscription. Three months subscription for Amazon Prime is priced at Rs. 329 and the yearly membership is priced at Rs. 999 per year.

The new RBI framework was originally announced in August 2019 and an extended deadline for banks and financial institutions has been set for September 30 this year. This deadline was extended to "prevent any inconvenience to the customers." Gadgets 360 learnt that merchants through various industry bodies urged RBI and the government to hold the proposed system as it was believed to disrupt auto-payments of mobile, utility, and other bills and subscription charges of over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

Initially, RBI issued the framework to deploy AFA for recurring transactions worth up to Rs. 2,000 in 2019. It, however, extended that rule in December last year to transactions of up to a limit of Rs. 5,000 per transaction. Transactions above that cut-off will require an additional one-time password (OTP). RBI also warned that any further delay in ensuring complete adherence to the framework beyond the extended timeline would attract stringent supervisory action.
