Huawei P50 Series Reportedly Set to Launch Globally After July 29 Debut in China

Huawei P50 series global launch has reportedly been confirmed. The new smartphone series from the Chinese manufacturer is initially coming to China on July 29. It is teased to have Leica optics and is expected to have HiSilicon Kirin 9000 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoCs. The Huawei P50 series is also speculated to have the regular Huawei P50 as well as the Huawei P50 Pro and the top-of-the-line Huawei P50 Pro+. The top-end model is likely to have a quad rear camera setup and a periscope lens.

Citing a company representative in Finland, GSMArena reports that the Huawei P50 series will launch globally. Exact details about the launch are yet to be revealed, though.

Earlier this week, Huawei took to Weibo to confirm that its P50 series is debuting in China on July 29. The company also released a teaser video that shows off the Leica-backed optics and a 125mm periscope lens with an f/3.4 aperture on one of the Huawei P50 models. The Huawei P40 Pro+ was also launched last year with a similar 125mm lens that enabled 10x optical zoom.

Huawei is also rumoured to offer a patented liquid lens technology on its P50 series to provide millisecond-level focussing. The new smartphone models by the company are also expected to have hole-punch displays and 5G support. You can also expect Huawei to provide some custom experiences through its proprietary HarmonyOS.

The China variants of the Huawei P50 series are expected to have the Kirin 9000, but the global models could come with the Snapdragon 888 SoC. There could also be some 4G-only models specifically for global markets.

iPadOS 14.7 Released With Home App, Apple Music Improvements

iPadOS 14.7 has been released just a couple of days after Apple brought iOS 14.7. This is the first time when the Cupertino company split up iPadOS and iOS releases as it normally brings software updates for both together, thanks to the same underlying architecture. The iPadOS 14.7 update brings improvements to the Home app and Podcasts. It also fixes bugs impacting Apple Music and Mail. Additionally, the update fixes security issues and vulnerabilities that could help attackers target iPad users.

iPadOS 14.7: What's new?
The iPadOS 14.7 update, as per Apple's release notes, enables the Home app with the ability to manage timers on the HomePod. The update also improves Podcasts library to let you choose whether you want to see all shows or only followed shows. Further, Apple has updated Apple Card family on iPadOS 14.7 with the option to combine credit limits and share one co-owned account with an existing Apple Card user.

Alongside the new additions, iPadOS 14.7 fixes a bug on Apple Music that was disabling the share Playlist menu option. The update also addresses the problem in which Dolby Atmos and Apple Music lossless audio playback unexpectedly stop. Separately, Apple has fixed the issue that was causing Braille displays on the iPad to show invalid information while composing Mail messages.

iPadOS 14.7 also fixes the problem where audio skips when using USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapters on the iPad.

Apple has also detailed the list of security content that comes along with iPadOS 14.7. These fixes are meant for operating system functions and components such as ActionKit, Wi-Fi, CoreAudio, Find My, WebKit, and Measure, among others. The same security fixes are also available to iPhone users through iOS 14.7.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3 Tipped to Come With Official IPX8 Rating Ahead of Launch

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 (not the official names) have been tipped to feature IPX8 water resistance. The South Korean tech giant is expected to unveil its two new foldable smartphones on August 11 at its Galaxy Unpacked event and it looks like water resistance will be one of the upgrades over the previous generation. As impressive as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip were, they did not come with any official IP rating.

The upcoming folding flagships from Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, are expected to come with an official IPX8 water resistance, according to a tweet by known tipster Max Weinbach (@MaxWeinbach). This means despite the design of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series, Samsung has managed to protect the internals from water damage to a decent extent. An IPX8 rating means the device has not been tested for dust resistance - as denoted by the 'X,' but the '8' means that it can handle continuous immersion in water typically in up to three metres.

This isn't the first time some kind of water resistance rating has been tipped for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. Back in April, the two phones were tipped to come with an official IP rating but at the time, it was unclear which rating it would be.

Samsung recently announced it will be hosting the Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11 that will be livestreamed on its website. The event has been titled "Get ready to unfold" and the teaser for the same shows the two foldable form factors which makes it quite clear that the next-generation foldable smartphones will be unveiled. In addition, the company is expected to announce the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4 smartwatches, Galaxy S21 FE smartphone, and the Galaxy Buds 2 true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds as well.

Google Maps Adding Timeline Insights, Trips Tool Along With Improved Transit Crowdedness Predictions

Google Maps is getting a new update that aims to help users better navigate through crowded areas. The search giant has drastically improved its transit crowdedness predictions to make travel for people using public transport safer than before. Google Maps is also providing a Timeline Insights tool that will show users a history of where they've travelled on a monthly basis. The navigation app from Google will also provide COVID-19 information, let users make reservations in advance, and make payments directly from the app.

Through a blog post on July 21, Google detailed all the new features that the update for Google Maps is bringing to its users. One of the most important features for Google Maps is the expansion of transit crowdedness predictions that was first introduced in 2019. It now expands to over 10,000 transit agencies in over 100 countries to tell its users if the mode of public transport they are going to take is empty or crowded.

Google Maps says these predictions have been made possible using "Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, contributions from users, and historical location trends that predict future crowdedness levels for transit lines all over the world." The search giant also mentioned that the predictions were developed keeping user privacy in mind. Google Maps is currently piloting this feature in New York City and Sydney, with more cities being added to the list soon.

Another feature mentioned in the blog post is the Timeline Insights tool announced exclusively for Android earlier this month. This tool gives the month-by-month travel history of users. It tells users notable places they've visited, the vacations they have taken, and they mode of transport taken -- car, public transit, aeroplanes, walking, or cycles. It also tells users how much time has been spent in different locations.

Users will also be able to view the trips and vacations taken by users on Android devices. Users will be able to make a list of the places they've visited and share them with friends as recommendations. This data is available under the Trips tab in the Timeline. Additionally, Google Maps will let users leave detailed reviews for other users to make an informed decision when visiting a new restaurant. Users can answer few questions in simple steps. It is live for users on Android in the US and will roll out to iOS users soon.

Furthermore, another Keyword blogpost mentions that users will be able to view cases in an area using the COVID-19 layer for Google Maps introduced in September last year. Users will also be able to make reservations with participating businesses via the app. Upcoming reservations can be managed via the Saved tabs in the Google Maps app. Lastly, users will also be able to make contactless payments for public transit and parking meters directly from the app.

Venmo's redesigned app gets rid of the global payments feed

Venmo has grown into much more than a simple payment platform, and the company has redesigned its app to reflect that. The company has introduced a revised app for Android and iOS that tosses the global feed, which showed random publicly-shared payments between people in favor of the friends feed that shows what's happening with your close connections. It's not surprising to see the company put some extra emphasis on privacy following the revelation that President Joe Biden's Venmo account was publicly viewable.

The new bottom navigation section, meanwhile, is built to expose features you might not have considered before. A Cards button plugs both credit and debit options, while a dedicated Crypto button unsurprisingly invites you to start cryptocurrency trading.

There is a strictly practical improvement. You now get a "complete" view of your wallet, activity and settings through your personal feed. Venmo is also eager to point out recent privacy upgrades, although those won't change much with the redesign. New payment types and widened purchase protections unveiled last month should start rolling out this week, too.

It may take a few weeks for the refreshed Venmo app to reach your device. It's too soon to say if the interface changes will be more helpful to you or to Venmo. There's little doubt they reflect the firm's shifting priorities, though -- money transfers represent just one part of a larger strategy to handle as much of your financial life as possible.

Apple Arcade's upcoming additions include 'Tetris' and 'Monster Hunter' games

Apple Arcade is expanding its game selection, and it once again includes a mix of brand new (if familiar) originals and well-established classics. The all-you-can-play service will "soon" add Tetris Beat, an Arcade original from N3twork that blends Alexei Pajitnov's line-clearng puzzles with rhythm game elements. The more you keep to the rhythm, the larger your combos get. The soundtrack includes well-known names like Alison Wonderland and Hannah Diamond, among others, so you might enjoy it just for the music.

The other upcoming title, Monster Hunter Stories (below), will be more than a little familiar -- it's a years-old adaptation of the turn-based Capcom RPG that made its debut on the 3DS. The game flips the usual premise on its head by making you a "rider" that forms ties with some monsters rather than hunting them down.

Two more veteran games will join the mix. Halfbrick's Jetpack Joyride makes the endless runner (flier?) available without worrying so much about in-app purchases, while Neko Atsume offers serene cat collecting as a foil to the other, more frantic games in the collection.

As before, Apple isn't counting on any one game to draw you to Arcade. Like past additions, these latest entries are more about making a stronger overall case for Apple's $5 per month service -- you might be more likely to sign up (or get it as part of an Apple One bundle) if you know titles like Tetris Beat and Monster Hunter Stories are just a quick download away.

Apple's AirPods Max drop to $455 at Amazon

Adorama's sale on the AirPods Max wireless headphones may have come and gone, but Amazon's latest sale is almost as good. Every color of Apple's high-end headphones except for space gray are down to $455 at Amazon right now, and that's about $94 off their normal price. It's also only $5 more than a sale we saw at Adorama at the end of last week, so if you missed that chance to grab a pair, you have another opportunity today.

One of our biggest gripes with the AirPods Max is their price. Normally $550, these are the best headphones Apple has to offer -- but despite how much we liked them, we still thought they were on the steep side. We recommend waiting for a sale before taking the plunge as AirPods Max are a much better buy when discounted like this.

They earned a score of 84 from us in part due to their excellent sound, solid ANC and reliable touch controls. AirPods Max have more balanced sound than competitors, with bass that comes through nicely but isn't overpowering. The active noise-cancellation on these cans holds its own against that of Bose and Sony devices, even if we slightly prefer the latter two for that feature. The Max also have Transparency Mode, allowing you to easily hop in and out of conversations when necessary. And you're getting spatial audio support on iPhones, iPads, Macs and soon, Apple TV as well.

All of that plus the Max's unique yet elegant design make them solid wireless headphones, but features brought by their built-in H1 chip make them even better for those living in the Apple ecosystem. In addition to hands-free Siri, you'll also get quick pairing and switching between all your Apple devices. While still expensive at this sale price, the AirPods Max are a good option for Apple lovers that want a pair of wireless headphones that both sound great and work seamlessly with their devices.

All Verizon Android phones will support RCS messaging by 2022

It's taken the better part of half a decade, but the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol finally has a path to ubiquity in the US. Following similar announcements from T-Mobile and AT&T earlier in the year, Verizon (Engadget's parent company) said today it's working with Google to bring the next-generation SMS replacement to all of its customers.

By the end of the year, existing Verizon subscribers who use the carrier's Message+ app will get full access to the RCS suite, including real-time typing indicators and read receipts. Then, starting next year, all of the company's phones will come with the Messages by Google app preinstalled. Once that happens, RCS perks like end-to-end encryption for one-on-one conversations and the ability to send full-resolution photos will be an app away.

To say today's announcement is a significant milestone for Google would be an understatement. The company has been pushing RCS for years, and at times it seemed like the project was fated to languish like so many of Google's past mobile messaging efforts. Due to the need for carrier buy-in, the protocol didn't "just work" like iMessage, at least not initially.

In the early years, even if you went out of your way to download Google Messages, there was no guarantee you would get any of its promised benefits. That's because, more often than not, it was likely the person you were texting didn't have an RCS-capable app installed on their phone, nor were they with a carrier that was onboard with the platform. That meant most Android chats defaulted to SMS. With Google Messages now the default on most new Android phones in the US, that's a situation that should be the exception, not the norm. Today's announcement also leaves Apple in an odd position. Once an innovator in the space, the company is now on the outside looking in at a more broadly adopted ecosystem.

Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked is happening online on August 11th

Samsung has just announced what feels like its zillionth event this year. But at least this one's something we were expecting. The company just sent out invites to Galaxy Unpacked for August 11th at 10am ET, and the event will be held online only.

In years past, Samsung's hosted August launches for its Note series of high-powered phones. This time, though, multiple reports have indicated that there won't be a new Note. That's become a more likely possibility now, after the company brought Pen support to its Galaxy S21 flagships this year. The stylus has been a hallmark of the Note line since its conception and has distinguished the series from its S-branded siblings.

Instead of a new Note, it's more likely we'll see new foldable phones like follow-ups to the Z Flip and Z Fold 2 based on the invite. Samsung showed off more flexible screen concepts in May, and though it might be awhile till we see those designs in a real product, the company is clearly continuing to work on the technology. Samsung also confirmed that it will be launching a new Galaxy Watch at this Unpacked, and the device will run a version of Wear OS that it co-engineered with Google. There's also a good chance Samsung will debut new earbuds since the "Galaxy Buds 2" has leaked twice this month.

We'll be streaming Samsung's event live on our YouTube channel, where we'll host a pre-show and a Q&A after the company is done. Come join us to watch the launch together live and get your questions answered as quickly as possible.

Adobe Premiere Pro now runs natively on M1 Macs

Following a beta release in December, Premiere Pro now officially supports M1 Macs. "From launch times to export, everything is faster, and editing is buttery smooth," Adobe says of the native Apple Silicon version of its video editing software. The company adds that Adobe Sensei features like Auto Reframe feel "noticeably" faster and that the app uses significantly less battery power on M1 Macs.

While Apple has only offered computers with its own ARM-based chips since November of last year, Adobe has been quick to support the platform. In December, it came out with an Apple Silicon version of Lightroom and followed that up in March with a native release of Photoshop. With today's announcement, you don't need to turn to Rosetta 2 to emulate most of the company's most popular apps. Premiere Pro's July update also includes a handful of features you don't need a new Mac to appreciate. Most notable among those is a speech-to-text feature that can automatically caption a video.

Elon Musk says Tesla will open its Superchargers to other EVs this year

Owners of non-Tesla EVs may be able to use some Superchargers by the end of 2021. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed on Twitter that the company is opening up its Supercharger network to other EVs later this year. Musk has long talked about making the network accessible to other electric cars and, as CNBC notes, he mentioned late last year that some brands have are already seeking access to Tesla's charging stations. Now, we have a better idea of when that might happen.

Opening up its network to other companies won't be simple, seeing as Tesla uses a proprietary connector in North America. It has to make sure the stations will work across brands and that secure software handshake between a non-Tesla car and a Supercharger is possible. The transition could be easier in Europe where the automaker already uses standard CCS connectors.

Electrek reported back in June that Tesla is already in talks with authorities in Norway, and that it applied for incentives to deploy charging stations that will be available even to non-Tesla vehicles "from the third quarter of 2022." Germany's minister of transport also previously revealed that he was in direct contact with Tesla and other companies to make sure existing infrastructure like the Superchargers are "also opened up to other manufacturers."

Musk unfortunately didn't elaborate on his tweet, so we've still yet to know which Superchargers will be accessible by other vehicles first. He did say, however, that the network will open up to other brands in all countries where it's available over time.

Samsung Galaxy F22 review: A Big-Battery Budget Smartphone That's Not for Gamers

Samsung's latest F-series smartphone looks quite practical, goes big on battery life, and appears to offer decent hardware at a budget price point. However, after using it for more than a week, I discovered that it's not what the Samsung Galaxy F22 offers, but what it doesn't, that makes it just an average budget smartphone overall.

Samsung Galaxy F22 price in India and variants
Samsung's Galaxy F22 is available in two variants. There's a base 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, which we received for this review, and is priced at Rs 12,499 in India. Then there's the second variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is priced at Rs 14,499.

Samsung Galaxy F22 design
The Galaxy F22 has a no-frills design, which is practical at best. It's available in two finishes - Denim Black and Denim Blue. The smartphone has a plastic body with the display panel made of Gorilla Glass 5. The plastic unibody has a matte finish with fine grooves on the back, which provides good grip. Both the display glass and back panel are good at resisting fingerprints. The fit and finish feels solid, with no creaks. Despite its 9.4mm thickness and 203g weight, the Galaxy F22's relatively tall body made it easy to hold. It's even comfortable enough for one-handed use, which is quite an accomplishment for a smartphone with a 6,000mAh battery.

Google to Release a Fix for Chrome OS Update That Caused Users to Lock Out of Their Chromebooks

Google has pulled the last Chrome OS update that was causing users to lock out of their Chromebooks due to a major bug and announced the development of its fix that is expected to release later today (July 21). The issue emerged after users downloaded Chrome OS version 91.0.4472.165. It restricted users from logging back to their accounts on Chromebook after installation. In some cases, the update even caused bootlooping and was not allowing users to access even the lock screen.

On its system status page, Google acknowledged the problem and said that its engineering team halted the rollout of the update. The company also promised to release a new version that would fix the issue.

Android Central reports that the bug in the Chrome OS update was not allowing users to log back into their Chromebooks after installation and was even causing bootloop in some cases.

Although the new Chrome OS release to fix the issue has been confirmed, Google has also provided a couple of workarounds to temporarily resolve the problem. The company said that users can "powerwash" their Chromebook, which simply means they need to factory reset their device. This will, however, clear all the data stored locally.

Specifically for users who are not even able to access the lock screen due to bootlooping, they need to roll back the update with a recovery USB key. This will also clear the local data from the machine.

Once the updated version is available, affected users need to either leave their Chromebooks on the login screen to download the update via auto-update or update them manually after logging into Guest Mode.

MV Agusta Confirms Participation At EICMA 2021

Italian motorcycle brand MV Agusta has become the latest high-profile manufacturer to confirm participation at this year's EICMA show in Milan. The event, considered one of the leading trade shows in the world of motorcycling, will take place in late November 2021, after it was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year's cancellation of the EICMA show compelled many brands to unveil their new products online, with some brands like BMW Motorrad announcing to stay away from motorcycle shows like the EICMA in Milan, and Intermot in Cologne altogether.

Of late however, several manufacturers have since been confirming their presence at the 2021 EICMA show. The event will be held in Milan, Italy from November 25-28, 2021. India's Royal Enfield is among the brands which have confirmed presence at this year's EICMA show, and includes Honda, Yamaha, Benelli and others who have already confirmed participation. MV Agusta is the latest brand to confirm participation, and CEO Timur Sardarov promises to 'surprise' fans at the 2021 EICMA show.

"The Milan show is an unmissable fixed appointment for MV Agusta, a showcase of great prestige in which to express the style and strength of our Made in Italy, made of technology and engineering. avant-garde, but also of high craftsmanship and know-how acquired in 75 years of pure passion. At EICMA, over the years, we have presented our most important innovations to the world, and this year too we will not fail to surprise and win over fans and experts," said Sardarov.

iQoo 8 May Be Unveiled on August 4, Tipped to Come With Snapdragon 888 Plus, 2K Display

iQoo 8 will be unveiled on August 4 as per the latest leaks and a teaser video by a company executive. The iQoo 7 series launched in China back in January and then in India in April. It was a flagship offering and iQoo 8 is expected to be the same. Some of its specifications have also been tipped and the phone is said to be powered by the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus SoC. As of now, iQoo has not confirmed that it will be launching a new phone next month.

iQoo President Feng Yufei shared a video on Chinese microblogging website Weibo showing a pool table with a ball with the number eight hitting and sinking a ball with the number four. While there is no confirmation in the post itself, it is believed that a new iQoo smartphone is coming on August 4. The eight ball could also be a reference to the iQoo 8.

Giving this speculation more weight was a post by tipster Whylab on Weibo stating that the iQoo 8 will launch on August 4 and it will be the first Snapdragon 888 Plus-powered phone. Then, tipster Digital Chat Station (translated) also posted on Weibo that the iQoo 8 has model number V2141A and that it will come with a 1,440x3,200 pixels display that has a high refresh rate. The tipster added that the phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 888 Plus SoC and come with 12GB of RAM with 4GB extended memory. The phone may also come with 256GB of storage and run OriginOS 1.0 based on Android 11.

The iQoo 7 launched in India in April along with the iQoo 7 Legend. The iQoo 7 is powered by a Snapdragon 870 SoC while the Legend variant is powered by a Snapdragon 888 SoC. iQoo 7 starts at Rs. 31,990 and the iQoo 7 Legend starts at Rs. 39,990. The company may follow the same pattern with the iQoo 8 as well.

OnePlus Nord 2 Battery Capacity, Fast Charging Capabilities Officially Confirmed

OnePlus Nord 2 5G is set to be launched in India tomorrow, July 22. The Chinese tech giant has revealed the specifications for the battery and its fast-charging support ahead of its debut. OnePlus has already confirmed some key specifications of its upcoming mid-range smartphone. Some leaks have also surfaced that tip the prices for the upcoming phone. OnePlus Nord 2 is expected to be offered in four colourways -- Blue Haze, Gray Sierra, Green Woods, and an unnamed Red colour option.

Through a tweet on its official Twitter handle, OnePlus has confirmed that OnePlus Nord 2 will pack a 4,500mAh battery that supports Warp Charge 65 fast charging. The tweet also mentions that Warp Charge 65 is capable of giving the smartphone a full day's worth of battery life in just 15 minutes. However, it doesn't mention the exact battery percentage that will make OnePlus Nord 2 last a whole day.

The different colour options OnePlus Nord 2 may be available in have surfaced through recent reports. It is likely that the Green Woods colour option may only be available on the 12GB + 256GB storage variant. The last smartphone by OnePlus to receive the Red colour treatment was OnePlus 7, that appears to be glossier than the Red colourway of OnePlus Nord 2.

The design of the OnePlus Nord 2 was also confirmed through a tweet by the company. The smartphone is shown to have a similar design to the OnePlus 9 series. Up front, the mid-range smartphone is shown to have a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and it will have a triple rear camera setup similar to the OnePlus 9 series.

The official Samsung India account on Twitter announced the launch date of Samsung Galaxy A22 5G. Without providing any concrete details, the company teased that the phone would be announced in the country on Friday, July 23.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G debuted in Europe at EUR 229 (roughly Rs. 20,100) for the 4GB + 64GB storage variant and the 4GB + 128GB storage model at EUR 249 (Rs. 21,900). Top Doctors' Body Advising PM Modi Made Odd Covid Decisions: Experts

For a century, the Indian Council of Medical Research was a little known government body quietly studying illnesses in New Delhi. But during the pandemic, it's taken on a role akin to Anthony Fauci's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the U.S. -- a powerful position that's made it a controversial face of India's struggles with Covid-19.

As the ICMR has acted as a key medical adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his health ministry, it's increasingly drawn criticism from the nation's doctors and independent scientists, who have questioned its drug recommendations and the group's lack of transparency on data related to variants identified in India that are now spreading globally.

India struggled to curb the world's fastest coronavirus surge this summer, and public health experts are warning that the country is ill prepared to face a possible third wave of infections. Some of the ICMR's decisions during the pandemic reflect the broad chaos that's dogged India's overwhelmed government apparatus, and have ended up benefiting the pharmaceutical industry rather than patients, critics say.

In April last year, physician SP Kalantri -- who helps runs a 1,000 bed hospital in the village of Sevagram -- wrote to the international scientific journal, The Lancet, strongly criticizing the ICMR for signing off on the health ministry's decision to recommend the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid therapy. The medicine remained on India's virus guidelines for almost a year after the drug, once embraced by Donald Trump, was discarded as a treatment for Covid in the U.S.

Kalantri's hospital in Sevagram, a village once home to Mahatma Gandhi, refused to prescribe that and other unproven treatments. Desperate patients, however, simply sought them out elsewhere, he said.

"Countrywide, the doctors started writing these prescriptions, which artificially inflated the cost for Covid management," said Kalantri, director professor of medicine at Sevagram's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. "Big Pharma was laughing all the way to the bank and ultimately the one who suffered was the poor patient -- it's where the science failed in India."

Numerous therapies initially looked promising and the ICMR's guidelines are constantly evolving as trial evidence emerges, said Aparna Mukherjee, a New Delhi-based senior scientist at the ICMR. "It's very easy to criticize when something is put forward," she said in an interview. "When you know there is some possibility that this drug might work, then just because it is in shortage you cannot say don't use it." Like other Indian government health agencies, the ICMR has been "stretched thin" during the pandemic, Mukherjee said. Spokespeople for the ICMR and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare didn't respond to requests for comment.

Yet criticisms of the ICMR don't stop there. Over the past year, the government and the ICMR have also been accused of withholding data about Covid and its variants that left physicians in the country flying blind, and of promoting a homegrown vaccine before it had passed key clinical trials. Public health experts say that it isn't clear how the ICMR decides which Covid drugs to back, and have complained that the agency hasn't fully disclosed how much funding it provided for the local shot.

Such moves have made the ICMR emblematic of India's struggles with Covid, exemplifying problems in the country's social and political fabric that existed for decades and lingered under PM Modi -- from a lack of transparency to the underfunded health-care system.

India's government needed "better evidence making and policy advice from the ICMR," said Shahid Jameel, a virologist who resigned in May as chair of the advisory panel of a state Covid genome-sequencing panel after criticizing India's response to the pandemic. The ICMR has also drawn criticism on social media from scientists and health care advocates for its decision making and recommendations, at times attracting attention overseas.

"The Indian Council of Medical Research has been singled out by experts for straying from scientific evidence, appearing at worst politically motivated and at best overly optimistic," an editorial in the Lancet said in September 2020, discussing the dangers of the "false optimism" that India's government was projecting even as virus cases continued to rise.

The pandemic has killed more than 400,000 people in India, numbers that experts say are vastly undercounted. As infections surged this summer, hospitals ran short of life-saving oxygen and some patients died in the streets. This month, India's federal health minister, Harsh Vardhan, resigned amid a broad cabinet reshuffle by PM Modi, whose popularity has taken a hit over the government's handling of the pandemic. But the ICMR hasn't changed.

Headquartered in New Delhi, opposite India's parliament, the ICMR was set up in 1911 by British colonial rulers and was traditionally focused on research. Covid-19 thrust the organization into the uncharted waters of actually managing an outsized viral outbreak.

In past epidemics, India's National Centre for Disease Control -- which has several infectious disease experts on its board -- has played a bigger role. Yet the ICMR has become the more public face of India's response to Covid-19, a development some scientists questioned. Sujeet Kumar Singh, the director general of the NCDC, didn't respond to an interview request.

ICMR's Mukherjee acknowledged that the ICMR's remit had widened during the pandemic and said that was due to the "need of the hour." It's taken on added responsibilities such as testing and procurement of diagnostic equipment, she said.

Funded through the health ministry, the organization has a budget of 23.5 billion rupees ($316 million) this year and backs hundreds of scientist fellowships. ICMR-linked researchers published more the 800 papers in Indian and international journals, according to its last annual report.

Since 2018, it's been headed by Balram Bhargava, a cardiolologist. The ICMR has several experts focused on diseases like malaria that have traditionally been India's biggest public health concerns, but few virologists work for the agency. Bhargava didn't respond to multiple requests for an interview.

With its states easing lockdowns despite only about 6% of the population being fully vaccinated, India is at risk of new waves of infection. But experts question whether India's health network will be better prepared when the next resurgence comes.

"There is a distinct uneasiness in the scientific community on the government's handling of the pandemic" and the "opaqueness of the process of consultations, consensus building, data sharing, and decision making," said Lalit Kant, who headed the ICMR's epidemiology and communicable diseases division for 13 years until 2011. "If we want the third wave to be managed appropriately then we need evidence-based insights."

In April, almost 300 Indian scientists and medical researchers appealed to PM Modi to allow them access to data that could help study, predict, and curb the spread of the coronavirus. While the ICMR has data on all Indians who've been tested for Covid so far, it restricts access, they say.

"The ICMR database is inaccessible to anyone outside of the government and perhaps also to many within the government," the scientists wrote. "While new pandemics can have unpredictable features, our inability to adequately manage the spread of infections has, to a large extent, resulted from epidemiological data not being systematically collected and released in a timely manner to the scientific community."

The ICMR conducted some of the most comprehensive serological surveys last year, including studying the presence of antibodies in various groups. It's also recently published research on mortality rates during the country's recent devastating second wave. Scientists outside of the government system have said they haven't had access to this data.

Congress On The Decline, But Still Concerned About Us": PM's Attack

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Congress was unable to digest the BJP in power and had not come out of its coma even after its defeat in Assam, Bengal and Kerala.
Addressing a weekly meeting of BJP MPs, PM Modi called the Congress's conduct "irresponsible and unfortunate" and urged his party to take facts about the government's work to the people, so that "the opposition's lies didn't fill the vacuum."

The Congress, he said, was deliberately creating a negative atmosphere in the country, when in reality there is no shortage of vaccines.

It was a matter of concern that even today in Delhi, 20 per cent frontline warriors were not vaccinated.

"The Congress thinks it is entitled to power. It does not care about its sliding mandate. It is declining everywhere but still it is more concerned about us than itself," PM Modi said on the opposition party.

He urged BJP leaders to go to fair price shops on July 24 and 25, when free ration would be distributed, and counter opposition propaganda on the Covid fight.

OnePlus Nord 2 Tipped to Come in a Red Colour Option Ahead of July 22 India Launch

OnePlus Nord 2 5G has had another leak that tips that the upcoming smartphone can be expected to come in a Red colour option. The latest colour leak suggests that the upcoming mid-range smartphone from OnePlus will now arrive in a total of four colours. Previous leaks have shown renders of the Blue Haze and Gray Sierra colour options, but renders of the expected Green Woods colour option are yet to surface. OnePlus Nord 2 5G is set to launch in India on July 22 along with the OnePlus Buds Pro.

The latest leak by notable tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) shows that the upcoming OnePlus Nord 2 5G is expected to come in a Red colour option. There is no confirmation whether the colour will be limited to a configuration or select markets. The last time a Red colour option appeared on a OnePlus device was on the OnePlus 7 ,which was also offered on the higher end 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant. The red shade on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G appears to be less glossy than the Red colour of the OnePlus 7 and the Amber Red of the OnePlus 6 before that.

OnePlus Nord 2 5G is set to be launched on July 22. The smartphone will be launched alongside the OnePlus Buds Pro, as teased by the company on its community forum. The design of the upcoming mid-range smartphone was also earlier shared by the company.

Apple Music Lossless, Dolby Atmos Makes Its Way to India; Android Beta Users Reportedly Get Lossless Audio

Apple Music Lossless and support for Dolby Atmos has come to India for ‌Apple Music‌ subscribers and the official Indian website has been updated to mention the latest additions as well. The features were announced back in May and started rolling out in June as part of WWDC 2021 keynote to select regions, but the India launch was delayed. Now, these features have started rolling out to iOS devices and Apple TV, and users have taken to Twitter to share screenshots. Additionally, Apple Music beta users on Android are also receiving these features in India.

Back in May, Apple shared it will be bringing Lossless Audio, Spatial Audio, and Dolby Atmos support to Apple Music subscribers at no extra cost. Then in June during WWDC 2021, the Cupertino giant announced it was rolling out the features to iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV 4K users. At the time, Indian users did not receive these features but later, the Apple India website was update to show that the features are coming soon. Now, they have been made official as the Apple Music India website mentions Dolby Atmos and Lossless audio as part of its Apple Music features. Some users have already started seeing Lossless Audio and Dolby Atmos in their Apple Music app on iOS devices and Apple TV.

A few users shared on Twitter that Lossless and Dolby Atmos features were available on the Apple Music app in India. However, it seems to be a staggered rollout as not all features are visible to everyone. As per a tweet by tech columnist Sahil Mohan Gupta, a 'Lossless' icon is available on the Apple Music app within select albums. In the Audio Quality settings, you can turn on Lossless Audio and set the quality for mobile data streaming, Wi-Fi streaming, and downloads with Lossless audio.

iMessage on iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Models Reportedly Compromised by Pegasus Spyware; Apple Responds to Attack

Pegasus spyware from Israel's NSO Group is now reported to have affected iPhone users as well. Evidence was recently found that the military-grade malware is being used to spy on journalists, human rights activists, and political dissidents. New forensic analysis uncovers evidence that NSO Group's spyware has infected newer iPhone models, specifically iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, through iMessage zero-click attacks. Amnesty International and Forbidden Stories claim that thousands of iPhone handsets have been potentially compromised by the NSO spyware.

The Pegasus Project is an ongoing investigation led by Paris-based journalism non-profit Forbidden Stories and other media partners that conducts forensic tests to find traces of the spyware on 50,000 phone numbers of potential surveillance targets. In the latest the investigation, it was revealed that iMessage zero-click attacks have been used to install spyware on iPhone handsets. Amnesty International says that it was able to confirm that thousands of iPhones were listed as potential targets for Pegasus spyware, though it was not possible to confirm how many were successfully hacked.

In the latest report, Deputy Director of Amnesty Tech Danna Ingleton says, "Our forensic analysis has uncovered irrefutable evidence that through iMessage zero-click attacks, NSO's spyware has successfully infected iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models. Thousands of iPhones have potentially been compromised. These attacks have exposed activists, journalists and politicians all over the world to the risk of having their whereabouts monitored, and their personal information and used against them. This is a global concern - anyone and everyone is at risk, and even technology giants like Apple are ill-equipped to deal with the massive scale of surveillance at hand."

Head of Apple Security Engineering and Architecture, Ivan Krstić said in a statement that these attacks are highly sophisticated, costs millions, and are targeted to specific people only. Apple is working on bringing new protections to enable more security of iPhone units. "Apple unequivocally condemns cyberattacks against journalists, human rights activists, and others seeking to make the world a better place. For over a decade, Apple has led the industry in security innovation and, as a result, security researchers agree iPhone is the safest, most secure consumer mobile device on the market. Attacks like the ones described are highly sophisticated, cost millions of dollars to develop, often have a short shelf life, and are used to target specific individuals. While that means they are not a threat to the overwhelming majority of our users, we continue to work tirelessly to defend all our customers, and we are constantly adding new protections for their devices and data," Krstić said.

This military-grade spyware used for high-tech spying for NSO clientele is touted to be a case of human rights abuse. While NSO Group denies all allegations, critics call these claims dishonest and assert that the spyware is now used only to fight crime, but also conduct surveillance. There is no clarity on who authenticated this sort of vetting but given that even iPhone handsets with the latest of security were not spared, speaks volumes for the targeted surveillance.

Warby Parker's vision test app can help renew your glasses prescription

You might not have to visit an optometrist just to get a basic prescription update for your glasses. Warby Parker is trotting out Virtual Vision Test, a revamp of its Prescription Check app that lets you renew your glasses or contact lens prescription using only an iPhone and your existing eyewear. Prop up your phone, stand 10 feet away and you can walk through a familiar "can you read this" test that will gauge whether or not your glasses or contacts need updating.

The update isn't automatic. An eye doctor will review the results and give you a verdict within two days. If you're seeing well enough, you'll just need to pay $15 to renew your prescription. If you're either struggling or just aren't eligible to use the app (see below), Warby Parker will recommend that you get a thorough eye exam.

The company is clear that this isn't a replacement for your eye doctor, and that you'll have to meet certain criteria beyond what we just mentioned. You have to be between 18 and 65 years old, with no existing eye health concerns and a single-vision distance prescription.

The approach relies on iOS' Vision Framework to measure your distance from your iPhone and ensure that you're far enough away from a proper test. We've asked Warby Parker about an Android version, although that might take a while given that it would need a rough equivalent to Vision Framework.

The motivations behind Virtual Vision Test are clear -- on top of the renewal fee, this could lead to more people buying Warby Parker glasses and visiting the company's stores. Regardless, it could be very useful if you either can't make time to update your prescription or are still skittish about a visit while COVID-19 remains a concern

Android TV gets new Google TV features

When Google introduced a new TV overlay last year, it promised to bring a modern interface to Chromecast and subsequently launched devices. It also caused a lot of confusion over what would happen to the Android TV operating system, which powers hundreds of models of streaming sticks, TV sets and more. Those older devices didn't get the new Google TV interface, but the company did begin to roll out some updates that made Android TV look more similar to the new layout, including a refreshed appearance and a Discover tab. Today, Google is adding new tools to Android TV to make it feel more like Google TV: Watchlist, recommendation tuning and detail pages.

With this update, you can now add titles to your watchlist across the Android TV system, either by long-pressing on your selection and hitting "Add to Watchlist" or pressing the Watchlist option in the show's detail page. You can also add to the list from your phone or laptop via Google Search or in the TV app. Your saved items will appear in a row on the Discover tab.

The company also tweaked the detail pages of each show by adding trailers that autoplay when you dive deeper into each title, similar to how services like Netflix are set up. You can turn these off in the Settings (under Home Screen in Device Preferences by deactivating "Enable video previews").

Google extends Pixel 4 XL's repair warranty for a year in some regions

Google will fix your Pixel 4 XL phone for free for up to a year after your warranty expires, provided you live in the US, Singapore, Canada, Japan and Taiwan. The tech giant has launched an extended repair program for the larger version of its 2019 flagship device, which features motion gesture support and built-in radar. Google stopped selling the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL from its own store in August 2020, but they're still available from retail partners until supplies last. While this program can get you free repairs if you're in one of the eligible regions, it only covers specific power-related issues.

In particular, the issues must be related to not being able to switch on your phone and to having trouble charging with an adapter or a wireless charger. If your phone keeps restarting or shutting down without you doing it or if your battery drains significantly faster than before, you could get free repair under the program, as well. In Canada, Japan and Taiwan, you could even get a free replacement. That said, you can't get a free repair or replacement if you purchased your device from Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy Spain or the UK, even if you're in one of the eligible locations.

Make sure to check Google's FAQ page for more information on how you can take advantage of the program in your location. In the US, you'd have to bring your device to a uBreakiFix location or access Google's repair center website to start the process.

Watch Ubisoft reveal a new Tom Clancy game at 2PM ET

Ubisoft isn't pinning all its Tom Clancy game strategy on Rainbow Six Extraction. The company is revealing a new Tom Clancy game at 2PM Eastern, and you can watch the premiere here through the video below. The company didn't say much in advance beyond calling it a "wild" experience, but a brief clip (also below) has already spoke volumes about what to expect.

For a start, this doesn't appear to be The Division Heartland. Instead, this would be a competitive team multiplayer shooter that looks like it's set in The Division's take on New York City, complete with killstreaks and an escort objective. It's not necessarily piggybacking on existing hot games like Valorant, but we also wouldn't count on a completely original take. This is the company that belatedly hopped on the battle royale bandwagon with Hyper Scape, after all.

Ubisoft had hinted that multiple The Division-related games were in the pipeline. In that regard, this mystery title is just one part of a much larger planned wave. It's just a question of whether or not these early projects will be popular enough to justify the rest.

Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a free-to-play, team-based FPS

Ubisoft is delving deeper into the Clancyverse with Tom Clancy's XDefiant, a free-to-play game it revealed on Monday. The first-person multiplayer shooter will pit teams of six characters (or Defiants) against each other across several game modes. There's a focus on gunplay, though you'll also be able to harness traits, abilities and "ultras" -- which seem similar to ultimates in other games -- based on the faction you're using.

XDefiant is a bit of a crossover between Ubisoft's various Clancy franchises. The initial set of factions include the Wolves (inspired by Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon), Echelon (Splinter Cell) and the Outcasts and Cleaners (The Division). More Defiants will be added to the game later, and will draw from a variety of characters and abilities "from the Tom Clancy universe ... and beyond," Ubisoft said.

Ubisoft San Francisco is developing XDefant, which the creative leads said features "fast-paced firefights meet punk rock moshpits." You can customize your Defiant's loadout (including a primary and secondary weapons, attachments and device). You'll be able to modify your setup when you respawn to help you adjust to what's happening in a match. It sounds like there will be ways for both casual and competitive players to get the most out of the game too.

Apple rolls out iOS 14.7 with MagSafe Battery Pack support for iPhone 12

Starting today, everyone with a compatible iPhone can update their device to iOS 14.7. The latest public release of the firmware adds a few useful but relatively minor features, such as support for the new MagSafe Battery Pack on iPhone 12. There's an option to merge two Apple Cards into a co-owned account with a combined credit limit.

The Home app now has a way to manage HomePod timers, while users in Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea and Spain will now see air quality info in Weather and Maps. On the audio front, there's a filter in the Podcasts library that allows you to see all shows or only the ones you follow. You can update your iPhone to iOS 14.7 by opening the Settings app, tapping General and then Software Update.

Apple will likely release iOS 15 in a couple of months. It's saving big upcoming features such as FaceTime on PC and Android, revamped notifications and driver's license storage in Apple Wallet for that update.

Elsewhere, tvOS 14.7 is now available, bringing general performance and stability boosts to Apple TV. Apple Watch users in 30 more countries can now use the ECG app after Apple released watchOS 7.6.

Apple Accused of Slowing Down iPhones After Recent iOS Updates by Spanish Consumer Protection Organization

Apple has been accused of slowing down several iPhone models after its most recent few updates. The Spain Consumer Protection Organization has sent a letter to Apple accusing the company of slowing down old phones like the iPhone 8 and iPhone XS, but also the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 after recent updates. The updates mentioned in the letter are specifically iOS 14.5, 14.5.1, and iOS 14.6 updates. The letter accuses Apple of purposefully slowing down iPhones and asks the company to compensate affected consumers.

Spanish media iPhoneros first reported that the Spain Consumer Protection Organization (OCU) had sent the letter to Apple. The letter is intended to establish dialogue with Apple and look for a way to compensate affected consumers. If Apple does not respond with a satisfactory response, OCU has reportedly threatened to file a lawsuit.

"The letter sent aims to establish a dialogue with Apple to find a way to compensate its consumers. Whether Apple does not respond properly, other actions could be taken in the national courts to enforce consumer right," OCU writes in the letter. While the letter does not detail specific user complaints, it alleges that iOS 14.5, 14.5.1, and 14.6 updates have significantly damaged consumer devices, causing their processing speed to drop dramatically and the battery to drain faster. The letter claims that numerous media outlets, both tech and non-tech, have reported about this. Altroconsumo, Deco Proteste, and Test-Achats have also participated in the letter sent by OCU.

Last month, iPhone users reported of severe battery drain issues after updating to version iOS 14.6. One iPhone user claimed that his device drained by a massive 70 percent overnight. An iPhone 12 user complained that their phone's battery went up to only 30 percent even after keeping it on charging overnight and that it "keeps on draining".

Italian Electric Bike Brand Energica Sales Up 91% In 2020

Italian electric motorcycle brand Energica has reported growth in its sales of motorcycles by a whopping 91 per cent in 2020, followed by a further increase in the first half of 2021. Energica Motor Company manufactures high-performance electric motorcycles and is also the single manufacturer for the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup until the end of 2022. The company announced the sales growth and attributes it to increase in production, the number of resellers and workforce while doubling the size of its headquarters.

The company attributes the sales growth to a commercial strategy to expand operations and selecting strategic dealers all around the world. In June 2021, Energica Motor Company S.p.A. has extended its presence in the Swedish market, with ProBike Sverige AB, a new dealer which also serves as a coordinating hub with other offices in Stockholm, Goteborg and Malmo. The partnership further strengthens Energica's North European network. With the operations in Sweden, Energica has nearly 90 dealers around the world.

The company says sales growth has also led to considerable increase in production and staff, with its workforce increasing by 17 per cent in the last six months. With increase in staff and production, the company has also announced the decision to double the size of its headquarters, acquiring new properties in July 2021. The new headquarters will be ready by 2022, with office and production areas twice as big compared to the current layout, Energica announced, without giving further details. Despite the 91 per cent reported sales growth, Energica has not announced overall sales volumes.

iPhone 13 Series Tipped to Feature Apple Watch-Like Always-On Display

iPhone 13 launch is still over a month away but the leaks have been abundant. The range is expected to have four models - iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. A new leak now suggests that the iPhone 13 series may have a 120Hz refresh rate and an always-on display mode similar to the one on the Apple Watch. The Always-On Display feature is likely to drain more battery, but the display is said to be less power-consuming than the one on the iPhone 12 series.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports in the latest Power On newsletter that the next-gen iPhones will come with a smaller notch and a faster A15 chip. The display is likely to be better for battery life, which means that it gives room to Apple for integrating features like the Always-On display mode seen on the Apple Watch. The display may also feature a 120Hz refresh rate and is reported to bring upgrades to video recording.

Gurman reports that Apple has tasked suppliers with building up to 90 million new iPhones for this fall. That's a 20 percent increase over the 75 million units Apple planned for the iPhone 12 series in 2020. While there is reported to be 120Hz refresh rate support, it will likely be variable in nature and the transition will be based on the work you do on your phone. The iPhone 13 series is also reported to come with power-efficient LTPO displays, which will make room for Apple to integrate new features, like the reported Always-On display.

Apart from display upgrades, the iPhone 13 may come in two new colour options -- Pearl and Sunset Gold. The entire range is likely to support Wi-Fi 6E and the camera module on the Pro models is reported to be significantly larger than its predecessor. Additionally, the iPhone 13 series is reported to feature faster wireless charging and improved wide-angle lens over the last generation of iPhones.

Soft robot plays piano thanks to 'air-powered' memory

Soft robots still tend to rely on hard electronics to function, but a new invention might reduce that need for unyielding chips. UC Riverside researchers have developed pneumatic computer memory that they used to help a soft robot play the piano.

Instead of conventional transistors and electric circuits, the "air-powered" memory relies on microfluidic valves that control airflow. Atmospheric pressure in a given valve represents a binary "0," while a vacuum indicates a "1." The researchers' memory has a complex-enough array of these valves to function like an 8-bit RAM chip -- not exactly powerful, but good enough that a pair of soft robot hands can play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" at a slow but steady pace.

The absence of positive pressure makes this particularly safe -- there's no danger of the memory exploding in mid-use.

The technology is far from ready for everyday use. Besides needed improvements to complexity and speed, a robot would need soft versions of processors and other components to completely eliminate the need for rigid electronics. The goal is clear, however. Pneumatic memory could at least reduce the need for chips in soft robots, and points to a future of completely flexible robotics that shouldn't hurt you if there's a collision.

Apple's latest iPad Airs fall to all-time lows at Amazon

Now's a good time to snag an iPad Air as the latest models are down to record lows. Amazon is offering discounts on the full suite of Apple's svelte tablets including pricier cellular models with ample storage. Prices start from $500 for the 64GB iPad Air in space grey and green, an all-time low and $99 less than normal. For more storage, the 256GB model is currently $639 in rose gold, down from $749, another record low -- while additional colors have dropped to $650.

WiFi will suit most, but for those who want to use it on the go, Apple's cellular iPads are down to $629 for the 64GB model (normally $729) and $780 for 256GB, typically $879. In terms of connectivity, you should notice quicker downloads straight off the bat, thanks to the jump to WiFi 6 (802.11ax), with 60 percent faster LTE speeds on cellular models.

The Air remains our top rated of Apple's tablets, with its 90 score slightly edging out the more powerful iPad Pro's 87 rating. Aside from the latter's M1 chip, 120Hz display and multi-camera setup, there's not much to separate the two devices.

Apple also just released the iPadOS 15 beta as a taster of the software improvements to come. Like the iPhone before it, the update brings widgets to the home screen, along with a persistent note-taking feature, a new Safari design and multitasking perks.

YouTube makes subscriber-only chats and polls available to all streamers

YouTube has boosted its features for gamers and live-streamers with three more features borrowed from Twitch, The Verge has reported. Going forward, all streamers will be able to limit chats to subscribers only, and create polls inside of chats. On top of that, streamers with 1,000 subscribers or more will be able to allow viewers to share clips.

Subscriber-only chat has been available to popular streamers since May, but has now come to all users. It can be useful for streamers (particularly smaller ones) as a way to moderate and control a chat, while providing some motivation for viewers to pay. And as with other platforms, polls provide a way to engage with and get input from users.

Meanwhile, clips are a useful tool for discovery, allowing viewers to catch the gist of a streamer's content before tuning in. At the same time, it allows fans to share highlights to attract potential new viewers. While it's currently limited to streamers with 1,000+ followers, YouTube said it will eventually roll out to all streamers.

All of these features have been available for some time on Twitch, which has even experimented with subscriber-only streams. While that platform still dominates livestreaming with two thirds of all viewers, YouTube owned about a quarter of the market by the end of 2020, as The Verge noted.

TenneT Adds More Electric BMWs To Power Grid Support Project

Germany's biggest power network operator TenneT is stepping up a pilot project to study the use of electric vehicle (EV) batteries in helping to stabilise power transmission networks, it said on Wednesday. Some 20 BMW i3 electric cars have been handed over to private customers in a project launched in 2019, and another 30 will be given to commercial fleet users over the next few weeks as part of the expanded study, TenneT said in a statement.

The tests will link the cars with charging infrastructure and electricity grids to promote renewable energy flows and to maintain supply security, it said.

TenneT and BMW are among a wider group of public and private sector partners that will test relevant hardware and software in the three-year endeavour.

Carmakers are increasingly exploring links between EVs and grids as the mass roll-out of EVs gathers pace.

Called "bi-directional load management", the process means that EVs do not just "fill up" with electricity but are also able to send back power in the other direction when it is not needed by the car.

Owners of rooftop solar panels, for example, could maximise the use of home-produced green power and earn cash from sharing surpluses.

"We are interested in finding new ways of flexibly steering weather-dependent, renewable power production and in that way to take stress of the electricity grid," said TenneT chief operating officer Tim Meyerjuergens.

TenneT is a key stakeholder in the transition to a carbon-free economy, operating the largest of Germany's four power transmission networks as well as the grid in the neighbouring Netherlands, where its parent is headquartered.

Keeping frequencies stable is a top objective as Germany keeps installing more volatile wind and solar power, while reliable capacity such as nuclear and coal generation goes offline due to climate and safety regulations.

Toyota Buys U.S. Mapping, Road Data Firm To Bulk Up Driverless Tech

Toyota Motor Corp's research arm said on Thursday it acquired U.S.-based Carmera, a provider of maps and data for driverless vehicles, marking the Japanese car maker's latest investment in autonomous technology. The purchase, through newly created subsidiary Woven Planet for an undisclosed sum, underscores Toyota's push to bulk up its self-driving arsenal as traditional automakers compete with the autonomous ambitions of tech giants including Apple and Amazon.

Buying Carmera will give Toyota access to real-time, high-definition maps and crowdsourced inputs that are essential for autonomous vehicles to locate and navigate themselves, the companies said in a statement.

The two companies have collaborated since 2018 on projects including technology that updates repainted lane markings on high-definition maps with accuracy.

"It's very well aligned with our expansion globally as a company," Woven Planet chief executive James Kuffner told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

Woven Planet was established in January to invest in and develop mobility with artificial intelligence. It is building a prototype "city of the future" called Woven City at the base of Mount Fuji, powered by hydrogen fuel cells that would be a laboratory for autonomous cars.

Samsung's Galaxy Buds Pro fall to an all-time low of $120

Samsung's Galaxy Buds Pro offer a compelling alternative to Apple's AirPods Pro. They're even more tempting when you consider the latest discount. The active noise cancelling earbuds are currently on sale for an all-time low price of $120 at Amazon-owned Woot. That's $80 off their typical price and $20 less than the previous record deal.

Maybe it's because the Galaxy Buds+ landed in February and the Buds 2 are expected in August. Whatever the reasons behind the latest price cut, the Buds Pro are still worthy of your cash due to their bombastic sound. Firstly, unlike the $150 Buds+, they boast active noise cancellation and a wider audio range that features more depth and clarity thanks to the internal 1mm woofer and a 6.5mm tweeter.

Voice calls have also been improved with the help of three microphones, an accelerometer and Wind Shield tech for when you're outdoors. What's more, battery life matches Samsung's estimates at five hours with ANC and Bixby turned on and eight hours with them off, or 28 hours total with the case -- which supports wireless charging. For those looking for durability, the IPX7-rating means you can dunk them in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Overall, they're still our highest rated Samsung earbuds with an exemplary review score of 85.

Just note that before you purchase them it may be worth familiarizing yourself with Woot's terms and conditions. For the uninitiated, the online retailer mainly offers limited-time deals with a modified return policy to its parent Amazon that includes numerous exceptions, including charges for shipping costs.

Microsoft unveils Windows 365, a Windows 10 PC in the cloud

Windows 365, a new service announced today at the Microsoft Inspire conference, is basically an unintentional riff on the Yo Dawg meme: Microsoft put Windows in the cloud so you can run a Windows computer while you're running your computer. You can just call it a Cloud PC, as Microsoft does. It's basically an easy-to-use virtual machine that lets you hop into your own Windows 10 (and eventually Windows 11) installation on any device, be it a Mac, iPad, Linux device or Android tablet. Xzibit would be proud.

While Windows 365 doesn't come completely out of nowhere -- rumors about some kind of Microsoft cloud PC effort have been swirling for months -- its full scope is still surprising. It builds on Microsoft's Azure Virtual Desktop service, which lets tech-savvy folks also spin up their own virtual PCs, but it makes the entire process of managing a Windows installation in a far-off server far simpler. You just need to head to Windows365.com when it launches on August 2nd (that domain isn't yet live), choose a virtual machine configuration, and you'll be up and running. (Unfortunately, we don't yet know how much the service is going to cost, but Microsoft says it will reveal final pricing on August 1st.)

Windows 365 likely isn't going to mean much for most consumers, but it could be life-changing for IT departments and small businesses. Now, instead of managing local Windows installations on pricey notebooks, IT folks can get by with simpler hardware that taps into a scalable cloud. Windows 365 installations will be configurable with up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage at the time of launch. Microsoft is also exploring ways to bring in dedicated GPU power for more demanding users, Scott Manchester, the director of Program Management for Windows 365, tells us.

Smaller businesses, meanwhile, could set up Windows 365 instances for their handful of employees to use on shared devices. And instead of lugging a work device home, every Windows 365 user can securely hop back into their virtual desktops from their home PCs or tablets via the web or Microsoft's Remote Desktop app. During a brief demo of Windows 365, running apps and browsing the web didn't seem that different than a local PC. It's also fast enough to stream video without any noticeable artifacts, Manchester says. (Microsoft is also using technology that can render streaming video on a local machine, which it eventually passes over to your Cloud PC.) You'll also be able to roll back your Cloud PC to previous states, which should be helpful if you ever accidentally delete important files.

Samsung Galaxy A12 is reportedly getting a new variant sometime soon. As per a report, Samsung could soon launch the Galaxy A12 with an Exynos 850 processor instead of the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC that is powering the smartphone currently. 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ And AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ Launched In India; Prices Start At ₹ 1.02 Crore

Mercedes-Benz India today launched the updated AMG E 53 4Matic+ and E 63 S 4Matic+ in India. The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ has been priced at ₹ 1.02 Crore and Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ is priced at ₹ 1.70 Crore. All prices are ex-showroom, India. Both models come to our shores as part of the German brand's 15 models launch plan in our market this year. Essentially, both AMGs are the performance versions of the E-Class family and are based of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class standard wheelbase that's on sale in global markets, while India gets the executive luxury sedan only in the long wheelbase (LWB) version.

It is quite evident that the shorter wheelbase and other sporty elements in its design give both AMGs a sportier demeanour and that starts with the signature AMG panamericana grille with vertical slats upfront, which is common on both models like many other design elements. So, a sharper bumper featuring large air curtains and glossy black elements, E-Class sourced sleek LED taillights at the rear and a quad exhaust system, with a glossy black diffuser are things you'll see on both models. That said, the E 53 comes with round tips while the E 63 S gets a squarish design. Both also come with a contrast lip spoiler and a set of 19-inch alloy wheels with the option of upgrading to a set of 20-inchers. Obviously, you do get LED headlights along with daytime running lights (DRLs) as well.

Both AMGs also remain quite similar even on the inside. In terms of features, both models will come with Mercedes' signature single unit display featuring two digital touchscreens for infotainment and instrumentation. The long feature list also includes the MBUX system, AMG-style flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel, 64 colour ambient lighting and ventilated seats among others. Carbon fibre has been used generously on the dashboard and centre console complementing its aggressive character, and contrast stitching on the steering wheel and seats further accentuates it. While the AMG E 63 S gets Nappa leather seats, the AMG E 53 comes with black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre with an AMG design, red contrasting top-stitching and AMG badging.

Google Expands India Cloud Services With New Infrastructure Push, Will Open More Data Centres in New Delhi

Alphabet's Google is ramping up cloud infrastructure in India with a second cluster of data centres in and around capital New Delhi to meet increasing customer demands in a key growth market, senior company executives said.

The Google cloud region in Delhi and its outskirts is the US tech giant's second such piece of infrastructure in the country and the tenth in the Asia Pacific.

"We have seen enormous growth in demand for Google cloud services in India so expanding our footprint in a new cloud region gives us the ability to offer more capacity for growth over many years," Thomas Kurian, CEO at Google Cloud, told a news conference this week ahead of a formal announcement on Thursday. "It's a large commitment from us in capital and infrastructure investment and it's designed to allow us to capture the opportunity that we see around growth."

The new infrastructure will help provide solutions for problems such as disaster recovery within India and ensure low latency for many state-run enterprises in and around Delhi, Kurian added.

Google did not say how much it had invested to set up the new cloud facilities.

India's fledgling startup economy has also helped drive and accelerate the use of cloud services, said Bikram Singh Bedi, managing director at Google Cloud's India unit.

Google Cloud counts home-grown social network ShareChat, online travel firm Cleartrip and private sector lender HDFC Bank among its India customers.

Google has bet big on India. Last year, it invested $4.5 billion (roughly Rs. 33,550 crores) in Jio Platforms, the digital unit of oil-to-telecoms conglomerate Reliance Industries, from a so-called $10 billion (roughly Rs. 74,550 crores) digitisation fund targeted for the country.

In June, Google said it was forging a partnership with Jio to help India's biggest wireless carrier with tech solutions for enterprise and consumer offerings ahead of the launch of 5G services.

Samsung Galaxy A03s Spotted on US FCC Site, Could Come With a 5,000mAh Battery: Report

Samsung Galaxy A03s is reportedly gearing up for launch sometime soon. The smartphone was recently spotted in a US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification listing. Only the specifications of the phone's battery were visible on the FCC listing. The Galaxy A03s was earlier spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance, Geekbench, Bluetooth SIG, and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) sites, indicating that the smartphone could launch soon globally as well as in the Indian market. The exact launch date of the smartphone has not been announced yet.

The FCC listing, spotted by MySmartPrice, only mentions the specifications of the battery installed in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A03s. The model number for the battery is HQ-50s and is TUV Rheinland certified with 5,000mAh capacity. The listing doesn't mention any other detail regarding the upcoming Samsung smartphone.

Earlier this week, the smartphone was spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance, which shows that the smartphone may be available in two variants -- SM-A037F and SM-A037F/DS. The DS moniker signifies that there could be a dual-SIM variant as well. The listing also shows that the Galaxy A03s could come equipped with single-band Wi-Fi b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct.

Another report from earlier this month states that the Galaxy A03s scored 163 points in the single-core and 847 points in the multi-core tests on Geekbench. The listing also shows that the Samsung smartphone could come with a 2.30GHz octa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The processor has the codename ARM MT6765V/WB which suggests that the Galaxy A03s will be powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 SoC.

Samsung Galaxy A03s could also launch in India soon, as per its listing on the BIS certification website. The smartphone appeared with model number SM-A037F/DS, hinting that the South Korean tech giant may launch the dual SIM variant in India. The smartphone was also spotted on the Bluetooth SIG listing and is expected to come with Bluetooth v5.

Redmi 10 Spotted in Multiple Certification Listings, Tipped to Come With 50-Megapixel Camera, 6GB RAM

Redmi 10, a rumoured budget series from Xiaomi, has been spotted on Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US and IMEI certification sites. These listings suggest that the phone is a work in progress and may be close to launch. The sites also leak key specifications of the phone and suggest its official marketing name. The FCC listing tips that the Redmi 10 will have up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The IMEI listing, on the other hand, suggests its official marketing name.

The rumoured Redmi 10 device has reportedly appeared on FCC and IMEI certification sites with the same model number 21061119AG. As mentioned, the IMEI listing does not reveal much about the phone but confirms that the model number belongs to the Redmi 10. Both the certification listings were first spotted by 91Mobiles.

FCC leaks that the Redmi 10 may run on MIUI 12.5 based Android 11. It is likely to support 4G and have dual-band Wi-Fi. The listing suggests that the Redmi 10 may come in three RAM + storage options -- 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, 4GB RAM + 128GB storage, and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage.

These certification listings reportedly also suggest the Redmi 10 may launch in markets like India, Europe, Russia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Tipster Kacper Skrzypek has further mentioned that the Redmi 10 FCC listing reveals that the phone may have a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 sensor, an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 wide-angle sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro sensor.

Late last month, the Redmi 10 series was teased to launch in India, but there has been no word from the company on it since.

The predecessor Redmi 9 series debuted in August last year and the successor may launch around the same time this year. The Redmi 9 and the Redmi 9 Prime were introduced first and the series now also includes Redmi 9 Power, Redmi 9A, and Redmi 9i, which were introduced later. There is no clarity on which Redmi 10 series phone will see a debut first.

Xiaomi is currently gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 10T on July 20. It could shift its focus on the Redmi 10 series after that.

Automobili Lamborghini today launched the new 2021 Huracan STO in India, priced at ₹ 4.99 crore (ex-showroom, India). A replacement for the company's previous high-performance version of the Huracan - the Huracan Performante, the new STO made its global debut in November 2020. New Delhi: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be in Delhi on July 25 as political activity spikes in the national capital targeted at the 2024 national elections, sources said. This is the first visit of Ms Banerjee after her landslide victory in the Bengal assembly elections.
The victory, achieved in face of the might of the BJP election machinery, has triggered speculation over her playing a bigger role in the opposition front in the next general elections.

Sources said during the visit, she will meet several opposition leaders including Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and a few others.

Her visit will also coincide with the monsoon session of parliament, where the opposition Congress is expected to target the government over multiple issues including the handling of Covid and price rise.

Samsung's latest HDR imaging chip is designed for vehicle camera systems

Cars are loaded with cameras these days, including on the front and rear, mirrors, side-sensing cameras and driver monitoring cameras. Samsung is trying to attack that market with a specially-designed automotive sensor that uses some unique technology to adapt to both low and bright lighting situations, the company announced.

A touch smaller than sensors used on smartphones, the ISOCELL Auto 4AC offers 1,280 x 960 resolution but has a unique "CornerPixel" arrangement. Within a single pixel areas it uses both 1 micron and 3 micron photodiodes, with the latter used for capturing images in low light situations. Much like Sony's HDR automotive sensor, it can capture video at night while also adapting to fast-changing lighting situations like in tunnels.

"With two photodiodes capturing images in different exposures simultaneously, the sensor offers up to 120dB HDR with minimal motion blur, allowing smoother transitions between dark and bright areas while preserving more details of the road ahead," according to Samsung. At the same time, it can mitigate flicker issues with LED lights over 90 hertz used in headlights, street lamps and other sources.

Samsung is rumored to have won a $436 million dollar contract to supply "the largest US EV maker" with camera modules that would replace rearview mirrors, according to the Korea Economic Daily. That automaker is rumored to be Tesla and the vehicle may be the Cybertruck, which has cameras in the front fenders rather than rearview mirrors, as Electrek has noted. All that said, however, the new sensor launch may be unrelated and for now, cameras still can't legally replace side mirrors in the US.

As with other automotive-grade sensors, the ISOCELL Auto 4AC can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to 125 degrees Celcius, and can be adapted to both human (mirrors, backup cameras etc.) and machine (self-driving) systems. The sensor is currently in production so it could appear in cars in the near future.

Bethesda PS5 exclusive 'Ghostwire: Tokyo' is delayed until early 2022

Ghostwire: Tokyo, the upcoming PlayStation 5 and PC game from Bethesda studio Tango Gameworks, has been delayed to early 2022. It was expected to arrive in the coming months.

The studio says it's "focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango." It's based in Tokyo, where a fourth state of emergency just came into effect amid a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases.

We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience the unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we've been hard at work building," Tango, which also made The Evil Within, wrote in a tweet. "Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we've always envisioned it."

Although a specific release date hadn't been set, Sony suggested in a CES 2021 presentation that the spooky Ghostwire: Tokyo would arrive in October. The company later took down the video and replaced it with a version that dropped release windows for several third-party games.

Bethesda announced Ghostwire: Tokyo in 2019 and Tango plans to show off more of the paranormal adventure in the coming months. Ghostwire will be a timed console exclusive on PS5. It's highly likely Ghostwire will eventually come to Xbox, though -- Microsoft owns Bethesda, after all.

While the Ghostwire delay may have been unavoidable, pushing back the release date to early next year may give Deathloop, another PS5 console exclusive from fellow Bethesda studio Arkane, more room to breathe. Following delays of its own, Deathloop is scheduled to arrive on September 14th.

The best accessories for your new iPad

Accessories will be key whether you're turning your new iPad into a laptop replacement or just trying to protect it against daily-life hazards. It's tempting to turn to Apple's own accessories -- and in some cases, you should -- but there's a slew of alternatives that work just as well and are often more affordable. We tested out a bunch of cases, keyboards, styli and other miscellany to see which iPad accessories are worth buying.

I've always been that person who takes her new smartphone or tablet out of the box and immediately puts it in a case. While some detest hiding the true form of their new gear, it's undeniable that cases provide protection for probably the most expensive tech you own. Apple's Smart Covers for its various iPads are fine, but they're overpriced and most of them don't give your iPad any edge protection. Similar alternatives abound, some of which do surround the edges of an iPad. I've found ProCase and MoKo make some of the best -- even better, they cost a fraction of what Apple's Smart Cover costs.

If you're willing to spend a bit more on a case, get something that combines protection and style. Otterbox is an expert when it comes to protection, but its Symmetry Series 360 series shows that it also has the design chops. Symmetry cases look similar to the Smart Cover, but the clear, scratch-resistant back is sturdy without adding a lot of weight to the iPad and the edge protection is substantial. I also like the extra flap Otterbox added that keeps the screen cover closed and holds the second-generation Apple Pencil to the side of the iPad Pros. Symmetry Series 360 cases are available for most new iPads, and while they're expensive at $90, they're worth it if you want a great balance of protection and style.

Apple brings its free tutorials to YouTube

Since 2017, all of Apple's retail stores have offered Today At Apple sessions, free workshops where you can learn, among other things, how to get the most out of the company's devices and software. In 2020, necessitated by the pandemic, Apple started offering those tutorials online, hosting the sessions over Cisco Webex. Starting today, the company is making Today at Apple tutorials available on YouTube.

The first one will teach you how to draw yourself as a Peanuts character in Pages. Krista Porter, a storyboard artist on The Snoopy Show, leads the nearly 10-minute long tutorial alongside Anthony, a creative pro at Apple's Carnegie Library location in Washington DC. Showrunner Mark Evestaff also makes an appearance in the video to talk about the Apple TV+ exclusive. We'll have to see how later episodes shape up, but at least in its current YouTube form, Today at Apple is as much a workshop series as it is a product advertisement.

That's not surprising. Today at Apple has had that slant for a while, but it's only one facet of the program as a whole. The move to YouTube also means the sessions don't function as a workshop where you can ask the instructor to clarify a point. So it's best to think of the program's YouTube availability as a way for the company to show people who might know about Today at Apple that it exists. Apple says it will upload more Today at Apple sessions to YouTube in the future.

Razer's latest Blade 17 features 11th-gen Core i9 CPUs

Razer has unveiled its latest Blade 17 with the latest NVIDIA and Intel parts targeted at both gamers and content creators. It also launched the more mild-mannered, but much cheaper and still pretty well-equipped Blade 15 Base, also equipped with Intel's latest 11th-generation CPUs.

The Blade 17 is certainly the star of this show, as it comes with Intel's 8-core 11th-generation Core i9-11900H, the same we saw in its Blade 15 laptop earlier this year. As Intel's first 10-nanometer gaming PC chips, it delivers a 19 percent speed bump over equivalent last-gen CPUs, Intel claims. You can also clock the chip up to 4.9 GHz while seeing a stock PL1 power draw of 65 watts. All of that means you should see more performance and power efficiency at the same time, according to Razer and Intel.

To compliment that CPU, you can get the Blade 17 with up to an RTX 3080 GPU in either 8GB or 16GB configurations, depending on the display. And there are three display choices: you can get it with a 120Hz 4K HDR 400 nit touch display for content creation (with the 16GB VRAM RTX 3080 configuration), a 360Hz 1080p display for the fastest gaming possible, or a 240Hz 2,560 x 1,440 display for a blend of the two.

Other specs include 32GB of 3,200 MHz Dual-Channel DDR4 RAM (upgradeable to 64GB), up to a 4TB NVMe SSD (with an open M.2 slot) and numerous ports: Two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C 3.2 Gen2), three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type A ports, HDMI 2.1 and a UHS-III SD card reader. It also comes with WiFi6, a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello IR, THX spatial audio support, a 4-mic array and a 70.5 WHr battery.

Apple gives the people what they want: their old Safari tab design back

The third developer betas for iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey started rolling out today, and key among the changes they bring is a set of updates to Apple's browser. Safari is getting some design updates, including easier access to reloading, sharing and Tab Groups in macOS Monterey, as well as improved navigation features in iOS 15.

One of the changes in the macOS Monterey beta that we didn't like was the removal of the tabs bar. Senior editor Devindra Hardawar pointed out that while the new menu in its place allowed Apple to devote more screen space to website content, it made sorting through your tabs messy and tedious. With today's beta release, though, Apple's brought back the standalone Tab bar, which will be enabled by default, like it was on Big Sur.

In addition, you'll also get one-click access to controls including Reload and Sharing, as well as access to new features like Tab Groups from the toolbar. If you liked the thin menu that gave you more space for browsing, you can still adopt it, and Apple's refined this to make it easier to see page titles while you rack up more tabs.

These changes will also come to iPadOS in a future beta update, which is nice since deputy editor Nathan Ingraham also criticized the removal of the tab bar in our preview.

On iOS 15, Apple's tweaked Safari to make it easier to use with one hand. When you're entering a search, the field will now appear on top of the keyboard so it's nearer the bottom of the screen, making it easier to edit your query. When you're done typing, you can dismiss the keyboard by swiping down on it. Apple also added a Reload option to the long-press menu on the left side of the tab bar.

If you haven't already, you can enroll in Apple's beta program to check these previews out for yourself. But be warned, you'll need to be sure you want to risk running potentially unstable software. If you can't wait a bit longer for the stable release, make sure you back up your data before installing the updates. You can find out how to do so here.

WhatsApp is testing multi-device sync that doesn't require a phone

Although WhatsApp users can use the messaging service across several platforms, they still need to be connected to a smartphone, largely because of the way WhatsApp handles end-to-end encryption (E2EE). That's about to change, and eventually you'll no longer need to have a phone nearby to use WhatsApp on the web, macOS, Windows or Portal.

Starting today, WhatsApp will invite users to try its multi-device beta. You'll be able to use the service on your phone and up to four other devices (as long as they also aren't phones). WhatsApp will try the multi-device approach with a small group of people from its beta program. They'll be able to opt out of the beta later. With the help of those users, WhatsApp will optimize the multi-device experience and add some more features before rolling it out more broadly.

Although many users have been requesting multi-device support, it's taken WhatsApp some time to make that happen. It has built a system that retains end-to-end encryption while letting people sync data like contact names, archives and starred messages across devices.

Until now, the WhatsApp smartphone app has been an essential conduit for the service. Other platforms like the web and desktop apps maintain a consistent, secure link to the phone app and mirror the content. But if your phone battery dies or there's an issue with the smartphone app, you can't use WhatsApp on other platforms.

Through the multi-device beta, each device will have its own identity key. Currently, users have a single identity key (i.e. the one on their phone) to handle encrypted messages. WhatsApp has developed systems it says will keep out eavesdroppers who try to add devices to a user's account and to minimize the number of times people need to confirm their identity across devices. You'll also have control over connected devices and see which ones are linked to your account.

Along with messages, WhatsApp will have E2EE support for voice and video calls as part of the multi-device beta. There won't be any impact on the way WhatsApp handles cloud backups.

Solving the issue of supporting E2EE across a user's devices can be tricky given that only devices that messages are sent to and from are supposed to be able to decrypt them. Apple seems to have found an answer -- iMessage supports E2EE across Apple devices. Although Telegram works on multiple devices, its E2EE approach (Secret Chats) does not currently do so. Like WhatsApp's current setup, Signal's desktop app also needs to connect to a smartphone to send and receive messages.

Zero's FXE offers electric motorcycle fun in a slightly new package

Zero Motorcycles has been around for over a decade and in that time it's consistently improved its fleet of electric bikes. With the new FXE, the northern California company has taken the thoroughly enjoyable FXS supermoto and transformed it into something a bit more futuristic looking with a new easier-to-parse display.

The FXE likely isn't a great pick for two-wheeled beginners or for folks that want a weekend cruiser, but for the experienced rider who needs a daily commuter that packs agility and power into a fun package, the 100-mile range FXE might be the best way to get to and from work. Watch our first ride video for the full story.

VW expects EVs to represent half of its vehicle sales by 2030

Volkswagen hasn't been shy about wanting to switch to electric cars, but it's now setting more tangible goals for that transition. CNBC reports that VW has unveiled a "New Auto" strategy where EVs should represent half of all the company's vehicle sales by 2030. "Nearly" all sales in major markets will be EVs by 2040, the automaker said.

The approach would not only include an expanded EV range, but a "leading" car software platform. Early models like the ID.4 have struggled with rough software that struggles to compete with rivals like the Tesla interface or Android Automotive. VW's development firm Cariad aims to fix that with updates that will include a unified infotainment system in 2023 and a "brand new" platform in 2025.

New Auto will also introduce a more Tesla-like "controlled" battery supply chain, complete with a harmonized battery format and six European gigafactories by 2030. The first, in Skellefteå, Sweden, will be run by a partner (Northvolt) when it starts production in 2023. Another factory is due in Salzgitter, Germany by 2035.

The goal is a significant one for car brand on the scale of VW, which owns brands like Audi, Porsche, Seat and Skoda. However, there are questions as to whether or not those goals are ambitious enough to meet both VW's other targets as well as those of key countries and states. The company wants to stop selling combustion engine cars in Europe by 2035, while the UK, Canada and US states like California all plan to ban sales of those passenger vehicles by the same year. Smaller rivals like Volvo plan to go all-electric by 2030. VW won't have much time to finish electrifying its lineup in some places, and it may seem slow in comparison to a few brands.

Apple's latest MagSafe accessory is a $99 iPhone 12 battery pack

Apple has quietly started selling a MagSafe Battery Pack for its iPhone 12 lineup. Spotted by 9to5Mac, the new accessory costs $99, with deliveries beginning early next week. Instead of a case you put on your iPhone, this latest battery pack attaches to the back of your device.

The accessory is available in a single size that features a 1,460mAh battery, meaning it can't change any model in the iPhone 12 family to full. When using the battery pack on the go, it will charge your phone at about 5 watts. Plugging it into a power adapter while it's still attached to your iPhone will increase that speed to about 15 watts. Either way, it's not the fastest way to top up an iPhone 12, but it should still help in a pinch.

According to an official support document, you need iOS 14.7 to use the battery pack. Apple has yet to release that update. The company also recommends using a 20 watt or higher USB-C power adapter and USB-C to Lightning cable for charging the device.

When it's attached to your iPhone, you'll see how much power it has left to give on the battery widget you can add to your Home Screen and Today View. Interestingly, Apple also notes you may get a notification from your device that the accessory won't charge it past 90 percent. You can bypass that limit enabling by low power mode through the Control Center.

Apple isn't the first company to offer a battery pack that attaches magnetically to the iPhone 12 and its siblings. However, after Amazon removed many of the most popular brands on its marketplace earlier in the year, those have been harder to find. And if you visit the website now, you'll find that many of the battery packs listed don't have an estimated availability.

WhatsApp's disappearing messages come to iOS

After releasing the feature on Android last month, Facebook is debuting WhatsApp self-erasing media and texts on iOS via a new beta release, according to WhatsApp info site WABetaInfo. If you sign up for the beta version 2.21.140.9 on Testflight, you'll be able to send photos and videos that self-destruct as soon as they're viewed and dismissed. Users with access to the "view once" feature will see a dedicated button resembling a timer in the caption input field, as shown in the WABetaInfo screen capture below.

Unlike WhatsApp's disappearing messages, which delete after seven days, photos and videos sent using view once mode will vanish immediately after you close them. The sender will be notified when their media has been viewed.

As WABetaInfo notes, there's nothing stopping users from taking screenshots of media and you won't be notified if a recipient has done so. As a recipient, you can't block the sender from being notified after opening the message, either.

WhatsApp has promoted the feature as a way to encourage more authentic and intimate conversations. Parent Facebook previously said that select features would be blocked from users who didn't accept its divisive new privacy policy, but it later backtracked on that decision.

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked lineup seemingly revealed in extensive leak

The latest in a series of leaks ahead of Samsung's upcoming Unpacked event is the most comprehensive yet. We already had a firm grasp on what to expect -- folding phones, a couple of Wear OS smartwatches and new earbuds were outed -- but now we can see more of the new products including new color variants. Prominent leaker Evan Blass has tweeted a bunch of GIFs of the purported Samsung devices set to make their debut at the virtual event, expected to take place August 11th.

On display are the foldable Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, which Blass previously shared pics of in late June; the Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung's follow-up to the solid sub-$700 phone that was glimpsed in April; the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic smartwatches that were leaked recently, too; and the Galaxy Buds 2, the latest addition to the company's growing range of wireless earbuds.

Acer's new Chromebook Spin 713 is $80 off at Best Buy

The Acer Chromebook Spin 713, one of our more recent Chrome OS favorites, is on sale at Best Buy. The retailer has discounted the laptop by $80, marking one of the first times we've seen it on sale since it came out earlier in the year. With the discount, the Spin 713 is currently $619 instead of $699. The model that Best Buy is selling features an 11th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It also comes with plenty of ports, including two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 connections, a microSD slot, as well as HDMI and headphone jacks.

Engadget gave the Spin 713 a score of 85 when we reviewed it last month. Part of what makes it stand out in the crowded Chrome OS market is that it features a display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. Most Chromebooks feature 16:9 displays, making them well-suited for watching video content but less than ideal if you need to do any work on them. The display on the Spin 713 is also bright and sharp with a pixel density of 200 pixels per inch. The taller screen also means you get a more generous trackpad than you'll find on your average Chromebook. Combine that with a solid keyboard, a capable processor and just the right amount of RAM for Chrome OS and you have a device that's solid. Aside from average battery life, one of the few complaints we had with the Spin 713 was the asking price. At $619, it's a better value.

Tag Heuer made a Super Mario-themed smartwatch because why not

Your favorite video game plumber will soon be available on a Wear OS watch. Tag Heuer announced today that it's collaborating with Nintendo to make a Super Mario edition of its Connected smartwatch, featuring "the intrepid, iconic hero" in various watch faces and animations. It'll be available July 15th for $2,150, which is in line with how much the Connected series has cost in the past. One of the highlights here, though, is the company's use of Mario's appearances to encourage wearers to get active and reward them when they move.

According to Tag Heuer, Mario's "upbeat and active personality will encourage wearers of this smartwatch to enjoy moving too." But it's not just about being inspired by simply seeing his face on your wrist. The watch's dial will become "livelier and more animated the more the wearer is active." There's also a "gamification rewards system" at play. Mario will greet you with a salute each morning, and as you move about, you'll get different animations as you hit 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent of your steps target. These animations feature familiar items from the Mario universe, like the Super Mushroom, Pipe, Super Star and Goal Pole. The company says this idea was inspired by the notion of "easter eggs," so I suppose you're supposed to treat these animations as such.

Even when you're not being active, the Tag Heuer Connected Super Mario edition's interface will remind you of the character. You can choose from a selection of four new watch faces, and they don't just offer red-and-blue themes. The Timekeeping dial, for example, uses "retro elements from the 1985 version of Super Mario Bros. with Mario, all in pixels." One of the designs features Mario's cap, while another takes elements of the game and puts them in a rotating animation.

In addition to onscreen graphics, the watch itself has Super Mario touches. Push buttons, crown logo and bezel graduation now come in Super Mario red, and you'll find symbols etched into the bezel that reflect the in-game objects you'll see when you hit your steps goals, too. A letter M is engraved on strap buckles and the crown, while the words "TAG Heuer x Super Mario Limited Edition" are also carved into the back of the watch. The company is also offering two interchangeable straps for the new watch: a black leather band on red rubber and a "sporty alternative in matching red perforated rubber," as well as a travel case in -- what else -- Super Mario red.

Those hardware touches are pretty important since even though the Mario faces and skins will be available first on this limited edition of the Connected watch, Tag Heuer said it "is also considering making it available on other editions of TAG Heuer Connected at a later stage."

Google rolls out a new Drive desktop app for syncing files and photos

Google is streamlining how Drive users backup and sync their files. The company is rolling out the new Drive for desktop app on Mac and Windows.

Drive for desktop will replace the Backup and Sync app (which supplanted the Google Drive desktop app in 2018) as well as Drive File Stream, which is for business users. Given that Google Workspace is now available to everyone, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have separate sync methods.

The new app combines the best parts of Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream, according to Google. You will be able to upload and sync your photos and videos across Google Photos as well as Drive. There's the option to sync external storage devices with the cloud as well. In addition, you'll be able to mirror Drive files on your computer, with locally stored versions of files for faster access.

On top of that, you can sync local folders such as your desktop and documents. There's also integration with Microsoft Outlook and Meet scheduling, and you'll be able to see who's editing Microsoft Office files in real time.

Drive File Stream users won't have to do much. Google renamed the app to Drive for desktop, and it will gain features from Backup and Sync in the coming months. Google will prompt Backup and Sync users to switch over to Drive for desktop. From October 1st, Backup and Sync will stop working, so you'll need to make the transition to keep backing up your files with Drive.

Bentley's Flying Spur Hybrid can travel 25 miles in EV mode

After announcing a shift to hybrid and fully electric cars by 2026, Bentley has begun showcasing the existing vehicles getting an eco-friendly makeover. Following the Bentayga Hybrid SUV, the spotlight is now on the more powerful Flying Spur sedan.

Bentley's second plug-in hybrid features a 410 break horsepower (bhp) 2.9-liter V-6 with twin turbochargers, paired with a 134 bhp electric motor, for a combined 536 bhp. That's 95 bhp more than its SUV counterpart. While the luxury vehicle's 0-60mph acceleration time of 4.1 seconds and top speed of 177mph is just shy of the standard Flying Spur V8.

To improve emissions, the new engine uses fuel injectors and spark plugs centralized within each combustion chamber for "optimal spray patterns." While the twin-scroll turbos and catalytic converts are positioned within the V of the engine.

Bentley says the Flying Spur packs a 14.1kWh battery to offer an expected all-electric range of around 25 miles, pending certification. With many city centres requiring hybrids to switch to full EV mode, those figures will be critical. Some car makers like Fiat and BMW have even developed tech that can fully switch hybrids to all-electric drive in low emissions zones.

Similar to that feature, Bentley says the hybrid manages battery usage by automatically shifting between three drive modes, including EV, allowing it to store up energy for when you reach the city. The sedan's combined petrol-electric range is more than 435 miles.

Visually, little separates the new plug-in hybrid from the rest of Flying Spur range, apart from a charging port on the left rear wing and an understated hybrid badge on the front. As you'd expect, this is a car for the uber-rich. Prices for the Flying Spur Hybrid are expected to start from an eye-watering £160,000 in its native UK, according to Auto Express, with sales beginning this summer and deliveries to kickstart before the end of the year.

Apple's Mac Mini M1 is back on sale for $600 at Amazon

Apple's colorful new iMac may be too flashy for some, and those people should look to the Mac Mini M1 for a similarly powerful desktop experience. Normally starting at $700, the Mac Mini M1 has been discounted to $659 at Amazon -- but an automatically applied coupon knocks the price down even further to $600. That gets you Apple's latest M1 chipset along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
The Mac Mini is a great option if you want to customize your desktop experience to a certain extent. You don't get a 4.5K Retina Display like you do with the latest iMacs, but that's not a huge deal if you have a monitor that you already love -- plus your preferred keyboard and mouse setup as well.

Aside from its compact size, this Mac Mini's biggest draw is the new M1 chipset, which has proven to be blazing fast on every machine we've tested with it. Switching between apps is a breeze, systems wake almost instantaneously and playing Apple Arcade games won't make the Mac Mini break a sweat. It's also worth noting that the Mac Mini M1 comes with an 8-core GPU, which is slightly better than the 7-core GPU on the base iMac.

Apple focused on the internals here, so the exterior design of the Mac Mini hasn't changed. It's still a sleek square on which the back edge houses all of its ports: an Ethernet connector, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI 2.0 connector, two USB-A ports and a headphone jack. That's another perk of the Mini when compared to the new iMac, which only has two or four Thunderbolt ports depending on the configuration. Overall, Amazon's sale is a good opportunity for those with aging desktops to get an M1 machine as a replacement for less.

36 states launch antitrust suit against Google over the Play Store (update)

Google has yet another antitrust lawsuit on its hands. Politico reports 36 states and Washington DC have banded together to sue the company over its handling of the Play Store. They say Google's control over the marketplace violates US antitrust law. The bipartisan group of attorneys general behind the suit filed the case in the same California federal court where Judge James Donato is scheduled to hire Epic's suit against Google over Fortnite's removal from the Play Store last year.

This latest action is the fourth antitrust lawsuit launched against Google following three similar claims in 2020. In December, a group of 38 states and territories led by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser filed antitrust charges against the company over its search business. The tech giant is also the subject of a Department of Justice probe.

The timing of Wednesday's suit follows after Google recently lowered its Play Store commission fee to 15 percent on the first $1 million developers earn on the marketplace every year. When Google announced the change back in March, it claimed it would reduce the fees it takes from 99 percent of Android developers by 50 percent. Later this year, Google also plans to enforce a policy that will require all developers to process their payments through the Play Store's billing system. The announcement led to uproar among companies like Netflix and Spotify that had in the past skirted that requirement.

While the Play Store comes preinstalled on the majority of Android devices, it is not the only place where you can download software to your phone. Amazon and Samsung operate their own app stores. It's also possible to sideload Android apps from websites like APK Mirror, allowing you to bypass the Play Store completely. Both those facts are not true of iOS devices where Apple's App Store is the only place where you can download software for your iPhone or iPad.

Today's suit also comes a little more than a week after a federal judge in Washington dismissed the FTC's antitrust complaint against Facebook, saying the agency hadn't presented sufficient evidence to back up its claims that the social media giant is a monopoly.

Update 07/07/21 10:30PM ET: Colorado has joined the lawsuit against Google, bringing the total number of states to 37. The tech giant has published a blog post defending its practices, however, calling the lawsuit "strange" and "meritless" for "attacking a system that provides more openness and choice than others." Google's Senior Director of Public Policy, Wilson White, concluded the post with this note: "This lawsuit isn't about helping the little guy or protecting consumers. It's about boosting a handful of major app developers who want the benefits of Google Play without paying for it."

OnePlus confirms its latest phones throttle the performance of popular apps

For the third time in its short history, OnePlus finds itself embroiled in a controversy over the performance of its phones. This week, AnandTech published a report in which it said it found the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 throttle the capabilities of their Snapdragon 888 processors when running popular apps like Chrome, Twitter and WhatsApp. AnandTech wasn't able to suss out a complete list of all the applications where the two phones limit their CPU output, but what's notable about the outlet's findings is that the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 don't throttle any benchmarking tools.

After AnandTech published its report, GeekBench, one of the more popular tools for benchmarking, completed a separate investigation and went on to delist the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro from its charts. "It's disappointing to see OnePlus handsets making performance decisions based on application identifiers rather than application behavior," the company said. "We view this as a form of benchmark manipulation."

If you've been following OnePlus for a while, you'll know the company is no stranger to this type of controversy. Back in the days of the OnePlus 3T, the company included code in OxygenOS that would artificially boost the clock speeds of the phone's Snapdragon processor when running certain benchmark apps. XDA caught the company doing something similar with the OnePlus 5.

On the face of things, the situation here is different. OnePlus is throttling the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 to save on battery life. And while most people won't notice unless they have another Snapdragon 888 device next to their phone, the company was still mispresenting the capabilities of those devices based on the fact they it throttle benchmarking apps.

Google Meet gets fun filters and masks on iOS and Android

Google has rolled out an update for the Meet video calling app that could make personal calls more enjoyable. The Meet app for Android and iOS now has filters and masks you can play with -- simply tap the sparkle button at the bottom right corner of your video call to bring up the Effects options. You'll find Blur effects and backgrounds in there like you would on enterprise and education accounts, but you'll now also find "Styles" and "Filters" among the options in the carousel.

Under Styles, you'll see lens flare effects and color overlays you can apply to your video. If you want to see the truly fun options, though, look under Filters for cute animal masks and virtual accessories you can virtually put on your face and head. These new effects are already live, and based on our tests, they're available for use even if

As 9to5Google notes, Google has been releasing a number of features that would make the service a more veritable Zoom rival. This time, the tech giant is hoping to win over personal users with a feature that could convince them to use Meet for calls with friends and family. The publication previously reported that Google will eventually replace its Duo app with Meet entirely. This move could be a step towards that, as well, seeing as some of Meet's new masks and filters came straight out of Duo's library.

Bugatti joins forces with electric hypercar maker Rimac

Electric hypercar company Rimac is taking control of Volkswagen's supercar brand Bugatti as part of a joint venture with Porsche (which VW owns). Bugatti and Rimac will share resources and expertise but remain separate brands with their own production and distribution setups as part of the new company, which will be called Bugatti Rimac.

Once the joint venture is up and running, which is expected to happen later this year, Bugatti will be able to harness Rimac's EV knowhow and perhaps carry on its legacy of making electric vehicles. Rimac, meanwhile, can tap into the knowledge of Bugatti, which makes the second-fastest street-legal car on the planet in the Bugatti Veyron.

Rimac will own 55 percent of Bugatti Rimac and Porsche will hold the remainder. As of March, Porsche directly owns 24 percent of Rimac, following an initial investment for a 10 percent stake in 2018.

Meanwhile, the Rimac Group is creating a new company, Rimac Technology, to handle "development, production and supply of battery systems, drivetrains and other EV components."

Bugatti Rimac's headquarters will be in Zagreb, Croatia, where Rimac is based. A 200 million Euro ($237.3 million) Rimac Campus is scheduled to open in 2023 and it will be the research and development hub for both Rimac and Bugatti hypercars.

"We are combining Bugatti's strong expertise in the hypercar business with Rimac's tremendous innovative strength in the highly promising field of electromobility," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement. "Bugatti is contributing a tradition-rich brand, iconic products, a loyal customer base and a global dealer network to the joint venture. In addition to technology, Rimac is contributing new development and organizational approaches."

OnePlus is integrating its mobile operating system with Oppo's

Half a month after OnePlus announced that it's becoming an Oppo sub-brand, it has revealed that it's also merging its OxygenOS with its new parent company's ColorOS. The two brands have come to the decision to "best leverage [their] shared resources" and to standardize the software experience across their portfolio. But what does OnePlus mean exactly when it said that they're "working on integrating the codebase of OxygenOS and ColorOS?" It said you may not even notice a difference, because the changes are happening behind the scenes.

OxygenOS will still be the operating system for OnePlus devices released globally. As 9to5Google notes, OnePlus phones released in China already run ColorOS, and that will likely remain the case -- it's just that the operating systems will now shade a codebase. All new devices the sub-brand will release will run the new OxygenOS, while current devices that are still receiving updates will get the new platform via an over-the-air update.

Speaking of updates, OnePlus is promising better and longer Android update support, which now rivals Samsung's, with the change. The OnePlus 8 series and the brand's newer flagships will receive three major Android updates and four years of security updates going forward. Meanwhile, the first Nord and any newer Nord and Nord CE devices will receive two major Android and three years of security updates. Finally, the affordable Nord N series phones starting from the N10 and the N100 will get one major Android update and three years of security updates. Unfortunately, you can continue expecting two major Android and three years of security updates if you have a flagship older than the OnePlus 8.

When the merge was announced, the companies said OnePlus will remain independently operated. Since the move was meant to pool their resources and to better streamline their operations, though, linking their operating systems more closely doesn't come as surprise.

Tesla Cybertruck will have an answer to the Hummer EV's 'Crab Mode'

Tesla won't sit by the wayside as electric trucks like the Hummer EV and Rivian R1T lure customers with special features. Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla is adding rear-wheel steering to the Cybertruck to help the EV maneuver with "high agility." It's a rough answer to the Hummer's "Crab Mode" and R1T's tank turns, in other words. You might not have much trouble with a tight U-turn or tricky off-road scenario.

Musk also reiterated that the Cybertruck's design will be "almost exactly" what you saw at the introduction in November 2019, although he teased that there were many "other great things" in the pipeline. The pickup is still due to enter production in late 2021.

Rear-wheel steering may be virtually necessary. The Cybertruck is large even by truck standards -- it might be a tough sell if it's difficult to steer out of a parking lot. Moreover, rivals like GMC, Rivian and Ford are all launching electric trucks that might match or sometimes beat Tesla's feature set. The category has changed since the Cybertruck introduction, and Tesla risks losing some business if it doesn't update its technology.

Porsche recalls 43,000 Taycan EVs over sudden power loss

It didn't take long for Porsche's rumored Taycan recall to become official. The German car maker has recalled about 43,000 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo EVs worldwide over a sudden power loss issue. You'll have to take your electric sports sedan to a workshop to receive an hour-long software update (over-the-air isn't an option this time), although Porsche said you could continue driving until the update is ready.

The bug has already been addressed for models rolling off the line, Porsche said.

The recall was prompted by an NHTSA investigation of nine incidents where power shut off while the cars were in motion, with six of the cars refusing to restart. Autoblog noted that Porsche found the problem in 130 cars after conducting its own investigation. There haven't been reports of collisions or injuries.

The recall is a blow (if minor) to Porsche, which has generally enjoyed strong sales for the Taycan. The EV is now popular enough in the US that it's outselling the 911, 718 and Panamera. While this isn't likely to tank sales, it comes as Porsche is still trying to persuade buyers that it's worth ditching the company's legendary gas engines for electric motors -- it might face some hesitancy after this, even if EVs are likely to be more reliable.

Boring Company proposes Fort Lauderdale transit loop for trips to the beach

Elon Musk's Boring Company is still trying to sell cities on transit loops, and it might just have a significant buyer. As The Verge reports, the Boring Company has submitted a bid for a transit tunnel loop that would link the downtown with the beach. The Las Olas Loop would be an "innovative and unprecented" way to manage traffic congestion and transit demands, Mayor Dean Trantalis claimed.

The City Commission will vote on the proposal on July 6th. It also plans to establish a process where other companies can offer rival projects. Specific details won't be available until after the competition is over, the city said.

A successful bid would establish the Boring Company's first East Coast tunnel. The only existing tunnel, in Las Vegas, launched in June.

It would be a crucial win. Musk's outfit hasn't had much success pitching cities on passenger loops, and has even shifted some of its attention to larger freight tunnels. A Fort Lauderdale contract would give the passenger system more credibility and might encourage other cities to consider tunnels of their own -- at least, so long as the tunnels prove to be useful.

Google removes popular Android apps that stole Facebook passwords

Google is still racing to pull Android apps that commit major privacy violations. Ars Technica notes that Google has removed nine apps from the Play Store after Dr. Web analysts discovered they were trojans stealing Facebook login details. These weren't obscure titles -- the malware had over 5.8 million combined downloads and posed as easy-to-find titles like "Horoscope Daily" and "Rubbish Cleaner."

The apps tricked users by loading the real Facebook sign-in page, only to load JavaScript from a command and control server to "hijack" credentials and pass them along to the app (and thus the command server). They would also steal cookies from the authorization session. Facebook was the target in each case, but the creators could just have easily steered users toward other internet services.

There were five malware variants in the mix, but all of them used the same JavaScript code and configuration file formats to swipe information.

Google told Ars it banned all the app developers from the store, although that might not be much of a deterrent when the perpetrators can likely create new developer accounts. Google may need to screen for the malware itself to keep the attackers out.

The question, of course, is how the apps racked up as many downloads as they did before the takedown. Google's largely automated screening keeps a lot of malware out of the Play Store, but the subtlety of the technique might have helped the rogue apps slip past these defenses and leave victims unaware that their Facebook data fell into the wrong hands. Whatever the cause, it's safe to say that you should be cautious about downloading utilities from unknown developers no matter how popular they seem.

Tesla & Ford Have Record Deliveries Despite Global Semiconductor Shortage

Tesla has yet again bucked the market trends and scored record car deliveries in Q2 of 2021. It joins Ford which also reported higher than expected deliveries as the global automotive industry struggles from an industry-wide shortage of semiconductors.

Tesla managed to deliver 201,250 cars during the period overtaking its previous record which was set in January. Tesla's chief executive and co-founder Elon Musk was expectedly very happy about the achievement considering the industry-wide struggles and the increased competition the US-based automaker faced in recent times because of the EV boom which Tesla triggered.

"Congrats Tesla Team on over 200,000 cars built & delivered in Q2, despite many challenges!!" Musk said on Twitter.

The EV boom is also benefiting Detroit legend Ford which became the latest automaker to have higher than expected sales in Q2. It managed to deliver 475,327 cares which up by up to 10 per cent from the same time last year.

Google Doodle honours Sir Ludwig Guttmann- know more about the father of Paralympic Games

Today, Google honours a man named Sir Ludwig Guttmann. Known as the founder of the Paralympic Games, the doodle is made to remember him on his 122nd birthday that is celebrated on July 3.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

Sir Ludwig Guttmann was one of the most prolific neurologists in Germany-until the Nazi rule came about.Afraid for his own life, he fled the country and found refuge in England in 1939.He came up with the first 'Stoke Mandeville Games' that are now known as 'Paralympic Games'.

The Google Doodle is designed by an artist named Ashanti Fortson who is a guest artist based out of Baltimore. It shows Sir Luttmann right in the middle and several moments from Paralympic Games that are drawn around him.

About Sir Ludwig Guttmann
Ludwig Guttmann aka 'Poppa' was born in a place called Tost (now Toszek in Poland) on July 3 1899. He went on to become a renowned neurologist whose research on spinal cord injuries and neurosurgical work procedures made him one of the most prolific neurologists in Germany.

However, being Jewish in Germany during the rise of Nazism was more of a curse. In 1933, he was not permitted to practice medicine in the country. With his own life at stake, he managed to escape the country and found safe haven in England in 1939.

There, he did more research work, especially in a condition called paraplegia. In 1948, he organized an archery contest for wheelchair users that became the brainchild of what is now known as the 'Paralympic Games'. Back then, it was known as the 'Stoke Mandeville Games' which was named after the hospital he was working in.

Sir Guttmann even declared the first-ever international Paralympic Games open in 1960. While his research in spinal cord injuries and other aspects of neurology is remembered by the medical fraternity around the world, his valuable contribution towards giving a platform for the disabled community to show what they have got will never be forgotten.

The Paralympic Games has broken down barriers and brought people together to celebrate the disabled community and the endless possibilities of them performing in the best way possible.

Intel and Apple may be first to use TSMC's 3-nanometer chips

Apple and Intel are reportedly testing chip designs with TSMC's 3-nanometer process and could be first to market with the technology, according to Nikkei. Intel may be planning to use the chips in next-gen notebooks and data centers, while Apple could be first to market with a 3-nanometer processor in future iPad models. Taiwan-based TSMC will reportedly start manufacturing processors for both companies as early as next year.

TSMC is currently manufacturing 5-nanometer chips for Apple's iPhone 12, and in 2022 will build next-gen AMD Zen 4 chips. It has targeted 3-nanometer volume production for the second half of 2022 with products likely coming along in 2023.

TSMC expects the new tech to deliver 10-15 percent greater performance at the same power levels, or reduce power 25 to 30 percent at the same transistor speeds over 5-nanometer tech. The company also has a 4-nanometer N4 process set to arrive in 2022, offering an evolution over 5-nanometer with minimal changes required by chip designers.

Apple's iPad will reportedly be the first devices powered by 3-nanometer chips, according to Nikkei's sources. The next generation of iPhones rolling out next year will supposedly use 4-nanometer tech for scheduling reasons.

Currently the chip volume planned for Intel is more than that for Apple's iPad using the 3-nanometer process.

The situation with Intel is perhaps more interesting. Intel confirmed to Nikkei that it would work with TSMC for its 2023 product lineup and has previously said that it would subcontract some chip manufacturing out to the Taiwan-based company, though it didn't say which technology it would use.

As it stands now, Intel has only just started rolling out its 10-nanometer chips (which are broadly equivalent to chips made with TSMC's 7-nanometer process), and has delayed 7-nanometer production until 2023.

According to Nikkei, TSMC will produce more chips for Intel than Apple. "Currently the chip volume planned for Intel is more than that for Apple's iPad using the 3-nanometer process," a source said. Intel plans to use TSMC to build processors for notebook and data servers "in an attempt to regain market share it has lost to Advanced Micro Devices and NVIDIA over the past few years," the story reads.

If the rumors prove accurate, Intel could possibly beat AMD to 3-nanometer tech, as AMD plans to use 5-nanometer chips for its next-gen Zen 4 processors. AMD now relies on TSMC for its processor and GPU chips, as its previous supplier GlobalFoundries decided not to manufacture 7-nanometer or smaller chips back in 2018.

TSMC is building a $12 billion chip fab plant in Arizona and plans to use its current 5-nanometer manufacturing technology. Intel, meanwhile, plans to invest $20 billion in two Arizona factories.

GM deal will reduce the environmental impact (and cost) of its EV batteries

GM isn't just leaning on technical prowess to sell you on its EV battery technology -- it's hoping eco-friendliness (and frugality) will play a role, too. The automaker has struck a deal with Controlled Thermal Resources to obtain more environmentally responsible lithium. The team-up will source lithium from California made using a process that generates lower CO2 emissions than the usual pit mines or evaporation pods.

CTR's project, Hell's Kitchen, will use a closed-loop system that extracts lithium directly from geothermal brine. GM's arrangement gives it "first rights" to lithium from the first stage of Hell's Kitchen, plus an option for a multi-year partnership.

The approach should not only reduce the overall environmental footprint of GM's EVs, but secure "low-cost" lithium that could lower prices.

The initial Hell's Kitchen stage isn't expected to produce lithium until 2024. However, GM sees this collaboration as important to its goal of dropping combustion engine cars by 2035. If the automaker can both improve the value of its EVs and make a stronger case for their green credentials, it might boost sales and have an easier time transitioning away from gas and diesel.

Tesla delivers 200,000 cars a quarter for the first time

Tesla has once again topped its delivery record, and this time it reached a symbolic milestone. As CNBC notes, the EV maker delivered an all-time high of 201,250 vehicles in the second quarter of 2021 -- the first time it has ever shipped more than 200,000 cars to customers in a given quarter. It delivered 184,800 machines in the first quarter of the year.

The Model 3 and Model Y represented nearly all of the deliveries. Tesla delivered just 1,890 Model S and Model X units, although that wasn't helped by the wait for the Model S Plaid. The first deliveries for the upscale electric sedan officially started on June 10th.

The achievement came despite "many challenges," founder Elon Musk said. He didn't elaborate on what those were, but he'd previously mentioned "major" supply chain price issues as a factor. Raw materials were a particular sore point, Musk added. The automotive industry as a whole has also reeled from chip shortages, making it difficult for some companies to manufacture enough cars to meet demand.

The number isn't as large as what some analysts were hoping for. Estimates ranged as high as 231,000. Even so, it's notable that Tesla is besting its own results despite cooling momentum and a less-than-forgiving market. The bigger challenges lie ahead -- it has to face stiffer competition as EVs become mainstream, particularly from potential blockbuster hits like Ford's F-150 Lightning.

LG's 'QNED' Mini LED TVs are coming to the US in July

LG's lineup of QNED 4K and 8K TVs unveiled late last year will arrive in the US in July, the company has announced. They'll sit just below LG's flagship OLED and consist of two 8K models (the QNED99 and QNED95) along with the 4K QNED90, in sizes from 65 to 85 inches. The TVs will launch first in North America and arrive to other regions in the coming weeks.

The new sets will use Mini LED tech that blends characteristics from both OLED and LED. Unlike regular LED models, Mini LED uses thousands of tiny LEDs, up to 30,000 for the 86-inch 8K QNED99. With so many more so-called dimming zones, the QNED sets will be able to display deeper blacks and offer more contrast than regular LED TVs.

At the same time, they offer more brightness than OLED TVs, though contrast and black levels aren't as good. Also, unlike with OLED, you'll occasionally see "blooming" or blockiness around bright areas when the dimming zone is larger than the light source on the screen. Mini LED is not to be mistaken with MicroLED either, as the latter is a completely different (currently very expensive) technology that works more like OLED, with individual LEDs for each pixel.

The models have all the specs you'd expect in a high-end TV, including brightness levels up to 3,000 nits, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision HDR support, along with Dolby Atmos for sound. All models offer 120 Hz native refresh rates with AMD FreeSync support, and LG revealed yesterday that the QNED99 models would have 120 Hz Dolby Vision gaming support when they arrive in July. You'll also get LG's Magic Remote, ThinQ AI, webOS smart TV features and Apple AirPlay 2 & HomeKit support.

LG didn't reveal the pricing in its press release, but B&H Photo Video already has most of the lineup up on preorder. Prices start at $1,997 for the QNED90 65-inch 4K model, with the 75- and 86-inch 4K QNED90 sets at $2,997 and $3,997, respectively. The QNED99 8K sets jump jump considerably as you'd imagine, with the 65-inch model priced at $3,497, the 75-inch model at $4,797 and the flagship 86-inch model at $6,497. There's no sign yet of pricing for the QNED95 8K models.

Google UK will rely on a regulator to crack down on scam finance ads

Google is tightening its ad screening rules in the UK after a steep rise in fraudulent adverts online during the pandemic. The search giant has announced that starting in the fall it will only run ads for financial products and services from sources that have been cleared by the UK's financial watchdog.

Google said it will update its policy from August 30th and begin enforcing the rules a week later on September 6th. At that point, advertisers will have to demonstrate that they are authorized by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or qualify for its limited exemptions. According to Google, the requirement covers financial products and services that go beyond the regulator's ambit.

The decision didn't happen overnight, however. Google has been on the end of mounting criticism from regulators, law enforcement and consumer groups over its perceived lack of action against scrupulous ads. According to trade body UK Finance, investment scam cases on search engines saw a 32 percent increase last year. These typically involve criminals duping victims into moving their money to a fictitious fund (such as a pension pot) or to pay for a fake investment. Losses incurred from the fake ads totaled over £135 million.

Meanwhile, the FCA threatened to take legal action against Google and social media companies after it issued 1,200 warnings about fraudulent ads on their platforms, double the amount from 2019. The regulator told a parliamentary committee that it was able to start taking action in the wake of Brexit. In the past, the FCA had been bound by EU rules on financial ads that did not apply to online platforms.

Others blamed Google's system for the failings. UK consumer group Which? found that 51 percent of the 1,870 search engine users it surveyed didn't know how to report suspicious ads in search listings. The perceived inertia from Google led some lawmakers to claim that it was content to continue profiting from the bogus ads. MPs told The Guardian that the company was benefiting from online scammers who paid to host ads on its platforms. While the FCA had also paid Google more than £600,000 ($830,000) in 2020 and 2021 to run 'anti-scam' ads.

For its part, Google claims it has improved its ad screening rules using a mix of machine learning and human review. The tech giant removed 3.1 billion adverts that violated its policies in 2020 according to its ad transparency report. It also began verifying advertisers in January by requiring them to submit legal identification, business incorporation documents and proof of the country in which they operate. Back in 2018, Google followed in Facebook's footsteps by banning cryptocurrency ads.

"This new update builds on significant work in partnership with the FCA over the last 18 months to help tackle this issue," Ronan Harris, vice president and MD, Google UK and Ireland, said in a blog post. "Today's announcement reflects significant progress in delivering a safer experience for users, publishers and advertisers. While we understand that this policy update will impact a range of advertisers in the financial services space, our utmost priority is to keep users safe on our platforms -- particularly in an area so disproportionately targeted by fraudsters."

Renault plans to electrify two thirds of its cars by 2025

Renault has been sending signals that it wants to accelerate its EV plans, and it's now clear just how aggressive the firm will be. The French automaker now expects 65 percent of its lineup to be electrified by 2025 -- potentially the "greenest" car mix in Europe, according to the company, and much better than an earlier 30 percent target. Its plans revolve around a lineup with 10 new electric cars, including the reborn 5, the 4ever (a modern Renault 4) and a Mégane EV.

Up to 90 percent of cars in Renault's brand stable (which includes Alpine and Dacia) should be electric by 2030.

The strategy hinges in part on making EVs more accessible. Renault is prepping a new platform (CMF-BEV) that should reduce costs by a third compared to the Zoe through an interchangeable battery, a "right-sized" 100kW powertrain and borrowed components from conventional cars. Renault is also focusing on more capable and affordable components, including more efficient nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries (with 20 percent more range versus alternatives) and an all-in-one powertrain that's roughly half as large as before while costing 30 percent less.

Renault is also hoping to cut the cost of recycling EV batteries to a third of its current levels by 2030, and have its Mobilize brand reuse batteries as stationary energy storage.

You'll have to wait a while for some of these cars. The Mégane arrives in 2022, and Alpine's "dream garage" will have to wait until 2024. Still, It's evident Renault wants to earn an eco-friendly reputation much sooner than originally expected.

Whether or not Renault will lead the pack is another matter. Volkswagen, for instance, hopes to be the worldwide leader in electric vehicles by 2025 "at the latest," and wants an all-electric European lineup by 2030. There's no guarantee rivals will meet their own goals, but Renault may have to tweak its plans again if it's going to stay ahead in a rapidly changing market.

Volvo's Concept Recharge offers a peek at the company's 'pure' EVs

Volvo's electric vehicles to date have been offshoots of existing car platforms (yes, even the Polestar 2), but it's now ready to show just what it can do when it builds an EV from the ground up. The brand has unveiled a Concept Recharge design that shows the direction for the company's "pure" EV future -- both in aesthetics and technology.

The Concept Recharge ditches the usual engine bay and tucks a large battery into a flat floor. That makes for more interior space, of course, but also leads to shorter overhangs, a lower hood and a slicker roof profile. This also gives Volvo an excuse to streamline its look -- the Concept Recharge removes "all unnecessary elements" and looks more like a tall hatchback despite its SUV-like vantage point.

The interior is equally stripped back and likened to a "Scandinavian living room." You'll still get plenty of technology, though, including a digital dash and a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. Volvo's fondness for safety is in full view with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor to collect environmental data and (eventually) enable autonomous driving features.

There's no mention of whether or not the Concept Recharge will evolve into a production car, or when you can expect the first EVs based on this formula. However, it's safe to presume that many of the design cues and basic technological ideas will reach cars you can actually buy. It's just a question of whether or not Volvo can compete against the many, many rivals planning from-scratch EVs in the next few years.
