BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Swine flu has been detected in numerous pigs at a farm near the Argentine capital, but the virus has not shown itself to be any deadlier to the animals than a normal flu, the government said Friday.

The discovery comes as Argentina is experiencing a human swine flu outbreak during the South American winter. The Health Ministry confirmed three new deaths — raising the country's toll to 26, more than any other nation on the continent.

Jorge Amaya, chief of the National Agricultural Health and Quality Service, told Mitre radio that about a quarter of pigs at the unidentified farm in Buenos Aires province were found to be infected.

"The mortality rate is less than 2 percent, which is typical of a normal flu for swine," Amaya said.

Nevertheless, he said, "Veterinarians are very worried because humans are infecting the animals." Amaya added that eating pork poses no danger to people.

Pork Producers' Association president Juan Uccelli said the farm would be closed down for an investigation of the H1N1 virus' evolution there.

Swine flu was previously found in pigs last month on a farm in Alberta, Canada. About 500 hogs were killed because a quarantine on the farm created overcrowding — not because they were sick, officials there said.

The Health Ministry said Friday that 1,587 people in Argentina have been infected.

But while authorities are taking measures to contain the virus, they say it is not expected to be worse than the regular seasonal flu.

It is a tragic day for the world of music as King of Pop Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest at 3 am (IST) in Los Angeles.

Paramedics were called to the singer's home around midday local time after he suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.

He was rushed by an ambulance to a medical centre, while several US media outlets started saying that the 50-year-old star has died.

Michael Jackson was supposed to begin a series of comeback concerts in the UK starting from July 13.

He has had a history of health problems because of which he could not do any concert in 12 years.

US media reports say paramedics were called to the singer's house in Bel Air at midday. They performed CPR on Jackson and rushed him to the UCLA medical centre.

Crowds had begun to gather outside the hospital, and the emergency centre was roped off by the police.

Jackson began his career as a child in his family group The Jackson 5. He then went on to achieve global fame as a solo artist with smash hits such as Thriller and Bad.

But the singer had been dogged by controversy and money trouble in recent years, becoming a virtual recluse.

Mumbai:   State-run carrier Air India has targeted slashing annual salary costs by Rs.500 crore, it said here Monday.

Air India has appointed a four-member committee to examine existing wage agreements, including flying allowances and productivity-linked incentives, signed with the unions associations and the Indian Pilots Guild.

The committee has been directed to go into all aspects of cost rationalisation and reduction of wasteful expenditure with the unions and submit its report by July 15.

Currently, the carrier runs an annual wage bill of over Rs.3,000 crore.

'Besides reductions in wage cost, AI is also looking at improving productivity of employees, elimination of restrictive work practices and reducing wasteful expenditure,' an airline statement said.

Justifying the rationale behind the exercise, Air India said so far it had not resorted to retrenchment or layoffs to tide over the financial crisis arising out of difficult market conditions that have affected airline operators the world over.

The move comes two days after the Air India chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav appealed to all staff to 'rise up to the challenge' and help the airline in its 'fight for survival'.

In a letter to each employee, Jadhav had said that in view of the global crisis, all carriers have been experiencing low fares, poor load factors, drop in premium travel, decline in cargo load and low yields.

'Employees have been receiving their wages, salaries every month even when people in the industry have lost jobs or seen emoluments take a dip. We should consider ourselves fortunate that we have been insulated from the adverse impact of the economic meltdown so far,' Jadhav said.

His letter came after employees threatened to go an indefinite strike from July 1 if their salaries were delayed.

The company, struggling to cope with a cash crunch, had earlier announced that it would defer June salaries. It has also asked the top executives above the position of general manager to forego their compensation for July.

MUMBAI: The UK may once again emerge a preferred destination for higher studies among Indian students as a recent spate of attacks on the current
batch in Australia forces them to redraw their plans. One of the best education systems and shortest visa processing time make UK the strongest contender to replace this affordable and easy-going destination for education.

"The pattern of education is the same in Australia and the UK as they both offer similar courses . And since UK enrols students in the September period versus July for Australia, this is still an open option for students ," said the director of a large education consultancy firm in Mumbai. The average fee for a course in engineering or MBA is the same in the UK as that in Australia.

Over time, the UK has slipped to the third place as the chosen foreign country by Indian students: in 2008, only 29,000 students landed on UK's shores, against 90,000 for the US and 36,000 for Australia. A higher cost of living and a two-year work permit after graduation as compared to permanent residency saw more students flocking to Australia. It was in early 2000s that Australia sensed an opportunity in educating Indian students.

The Australian universities joined hands with the government and organised education fairs in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Punjab, among other places, with a focus on the campuses and the courses offered.

The sweeteners were too lucrative for Indian students to ignore: permanent residency within three years after studying 18 months in Australia, and a host of job opportunities. In the last few years, a total of 90,000 students have taken up higher studies in the island nation, according to industry estimates .

"Those who do not want to settle abroad or have plans to get a job elsewhere opt for the UK. However, most of them want to start their career abroad and settle there, and Australia gives them this opportunity," said an industry official requesting anonymity

TEHRAN — Locked in a continuing bitter contest Monday with Iranians who say the presidential elections were rigged, the authorities here acknowledged that the number of votes cast in 50 cities exceeded the actual number of voters, state television reported following assertions by the country's supreme leader that the ballot was fair.

But the authorities insisted that discrepancies, which could affect three million votes, did not violate Iranian law and the country's influential Guardian Council said it was not clear whether they would decisively change the election result.

The news emerged on the English-language Press TV Web site late Sunday as a bitter rift among Iran's ruling clerics deepened over the disputed election. The outcome of the vote, awarding a lopsided victory to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has convulsed Tehran in the worst violence in 30 years, with the government trying to link the defiant loser to terrorists and detaining relatives of his powerful backer, a founder of the Islamic republic.

Michael Vaughan has been left out of England's 16-man squad for an Ashes training camp, BBC Sport Understands
The omission of the ex-captain from the line-up, who will face Warwickshire in a three-day warm-up game, indicates he will not be picked to face Australia.

Vaughan has scored only 159 first-class runs at an average of 19.88 in six matches this summer, with a top score of 43 against Worcestershire last week.

The first Ashes Test takes place at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on 8 July.

It it not yet known whether Durham bowler Steve Harmison has done enough to avoid a similar fate to Vaughan.

The paceman was dropped ahead of the one-sided Test series win over the West Indies but has responded by claiming 30 championship wickets in six matches, including 16 in the last two games, against Lancashire and Warwickshire.

However, left-arm spinner Monty Panesar appears to be a certainty for selection, despite his recent struggles for Northamptonshire and a worrying return at Cardiff last week of 2-149 from 44 overs.

Panesar has claimed only six wickets in six championship matches this summer at an average of 86.67. He is under pressure for his place as second spinner from Adil Rashid, who impressed in the World Twenty20, and has emerged as a shock contender to make the final 13-man Ashes squad, to be announced on 4 July.

Andrew Flintoff, meanwhile, has now proved his fitness after two championship matches back with Lancashire and will also be included alongside Ryan Sidebottom, who has made his own recovery after an Achilles tendon problem

ASHES SERIES
8-12 Jul: 1st Test, Cardiff
16-20 Jul: 2nd Test, Lord's
30 Jul- 3 Aug: 3rd Test, Edgbaston
7-11 Aug: 4th Test, Headingley
20-24 Aug: 5th Test, Oval
Another player hoping for a recall in the Ashes training squad is Ian Bell, who lost his place after the debacle in Jamaica this winter but has scored consistently in first class cricket, averaging 64.5 after seven matches.

Both Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan and Onions, who impressed during the second Test win at Chester-le-Street over West Indies, are expected to feature for the Lions against Australia to allow the return of Flintoff and Sidebottom to England's line-up.

National selector Geoff Miller is also set to announce the line-up for the Lions side to face Australia in a four-day match starting on 1 July, the same day as the Warwickshire fixture

The International Cricket Council conducted a dope test on the Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi after his team won the Twenty20 World Cup title defeating Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's.

Afridi, who was man-of-the-match in Pakistan's eight-wicket victory over their sub-continental rivals in Sunday night's summit clash, was called for the surprise test by ICC officials after the match.

The dope test is believed to be part of ICC's routine practice under which any cricketer could be called for such a test during ICC events

West Indies have called up Darren Bravo, the younger brother of all-rounder Dwayne, for the forthcoming one-day series against India.

Both Bravos were named in a 13-man squad for the first two games in Jamaica on 26 and 28 June.

Darren, 20, scored over 600 runs for Trinidad and Tobago in domestic four-day cricket earlier this year.

There is no place for fast bowler Fidel Edwards, who suffered a back problem during the World Twenty20 in England.

Batsman Lendl Simmons and all-rounder Kieron Pollard have been left out of the squad and replaced by Runako Morton and Narsingh Deonarine.

West Indies will play four 50-overs matches against India, the final two in St Lucia on 3 and 5 July.

Federer said he was disappointed by Rafael Nadal's withdrawal from Wimbledon because of injury.

It brings to a temporary end the rivalry that last year culminated in the pair's epic clash at the grasscourt grand slam, dubbed the greatest final of all time.

Nadal, the world No. 1, opted out of Wimbledon on Saturday because of knee tendinitis, robbing fans of any hope of a final replay.

"It's disappointing for me because I'd love to play him," Federer said.

"He's my main rival and we've had some wonderful matches over the years, and especially the one here last year, that obviously stands out.

"It just shows me how lucky I've been that I haven't been injured over all those years.

"I'm a little bit lucky, but getting to all the finals that I have is not normal, not being injured is not normal. It's luck, but it's also planning and preparation."

The Swiss has also been buoyed by finally lifting his French Open jinx.

He downed Robin Soderling in straight sets at Roland Garros this month to claim the one piece of grand slam silverware that had been missing from his trophy cabinet.

Federer will open proceedings on Centre Court tonight against Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu in his first match since the French Open final.

He missed the grasscourt tournament in Halle, Germany, last week, but is now refreshed and ready to go.

Nadal's decision not to defend his title leaves Federer as firm favourite to win Wimbledon for the sixth time and beat Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slam titles.

But he conceded Murray would be a worthy opponent.

"He's a very gifted player," Federer said. "He has wonderful feel, he's a great tactician. I always said that, and he's finally proved it.

"It took him some time, and that was the disappointing part.

"I expected him to do better a few years ago, but everything is coming together for him now and he's been rock solid for almost two years now."

Britain has been in the grip of Murray mania since he became world No. 3, the highest rank for a Briton in the history of modern tennis.

Murray beat American James Blake, 7-5 6-4, in the Queen's Club final last week.

But Scotsman is downplaying the public reaction to his grasscourt campaign this year.

"I don't get caught up in the whole hype thing, getting involved in reading all the papers, listening to what everyone else is saying," he said.

"Because at the end of the day, it makes no difference if some guy thinks I can win the tournament or whatever."

LONDON: Sri Lanka batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan was on Sunday named as the player of the tournament at the World Twenty20 despite being dismissed for
nought in the eight-wicket final defeat to Pakistan.

Opening the innings throughout the tournament, Dilshan scored a total of 317 runs at a strike-rate of 144.74 and an average above 52.

He scored three half-centuries in the tournament and his unbeaten 96 in the semi-final against the West Indies was the highest individual total of the tournament.

That innings almost single-handedly dragged Sri Lanka to a score that it was then able to defend and it caused his captain Kumar Sangakkara to hail Dilshan as "a pioneer stroke-maker in Twenty20".

Dilshan also hit more boundaries than any other player, his 46 fours and three sixes well clear of the next biggest tally of hits both to and over the ropes, 28 fours and four sixes by South Africa's Jacques Kallis.

And his batting was talked about not only for its excellence but also for its innovation, with his ability to flip fast and medium-paced bowlers past his nose and over the wicketkeeper's head to the boundary one of the enduring memories of the action for all that saw it.

Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee and himself a two-time World Cup winner at Lord's, said: "Tillakaratne has been a tower of strength for Sri Lanka throughout this tournament. He has impressed us all with his improvisation, courage out in the middle and wonderful range of shots.

"I'm not sure how he manages to play that scoop shot - if I had tried that when I played I think I would have ended up with a mouth full of ball - but it was wonderful entertainment and his contribution really gave the tournament a boost."

KARACHI: Celebration for the Twenty20 World Cup victory is in full swing in Pakistan, but national team coach Intikhab Alam advised his cricketers
to switch their focus onto the Sri Lanka tour commencing on June 27.

Alam who was also the manager when Pakistan clinched the 1992 World Cup under the leadership of Imran Khan, said this is the high time that cricketers turn their focus onto the upcoming series in Sri Lanka as now they have to live upto the expectation of the country.

"I am confident they will manage to switch to the Test mode quickly and comfortably because more responsibilities and pressures are now on us to do well in Sri Lanka," he said.

Pakistan is in celebration mood as Karachi reverberated with fireworks and people thronged onto streets to celebrate the national team's victory in the showpiece event, a rare moment of joy for Pakistani citizens amid continuous violence.

"There is not much time because we will be leaving for Sri Lanka three days after reaching home. So I want the players to get required rest before starting preparation for the coming series," Alam, also a former captain, said.

Pakistan will play three Test matches before taking on the islanders in a five-match ODI series and a Twenty20 match. The squad is expected to be announced soon.

The country is also preparing to award a grand welcome to the heroes when they return tomorrow morning with thousands expected to turn up at the Lahore and Karachi airports to greet their heroes.

Alam described Pakistan's victory as sweet and memorable, given the tough time people on the country are facing.

"I am happy that the team clicked in their last few matches which were do or die encounters for us. All the players contributed brilliantly," he said.

Your resume remains one of the most important components of your job search. A well written resume that gives the employer an accurate view of your skills will help you stand out from the crowd. Here are links to some of my favorite resume tips, resume samples and free resume templates. I have also included links to some actual resumes of employees I have hired in the past for various technical companies.

1. Resume Tip 1: Spell Check and "Reality Check"
Before you submit your resume, make sure you give it a spell check using your word processing software. After you spell check it, have someone else give it a quick "reality check" to make sure that the spell checker didn't miss anything and to make sure that you didn't make a mistake that your computer can't catch. It is important that you get a second set of eyes to look over the document that could be responsible for your next job.

2. Resume Tip 2: Not Too Long, But Not Too Short
How long should your resume be? This is always a tough call. Some experts believe a one page resume is the perfect length. I would disagree, unless you really have few skills and experiences to share. Go into enough detail to give an accurate view of your skills, but not so long that the reader falls asleep. You do not need to list every project you have ever worked on. Summarize, but be inclusive.

3. Resume Tip 3: Formatting Counts
Have 2 versions of your resume available. One to be viewed online, and one to be handed out at in-person interviews and job fairs. Fancy formatting with pretty fonts, lines, boxes and bullet points just does not make it through on most computers. Anything you send or submit online should have very basic formatting (spacing and paragraph breaks, for example).

4. Resume Tip 4: Keywords are Key
When an employer searches a database, they use keywords. In general, they expect the results to be representative of what they are searching for. This should mean a couple of things to the resume writer:

5. Resume Tip 5: Include the Basics
A technical resume should include the following information sections.
An objective: 1-2 sentences describing what you want, customize this for the job you are applying for.
Education: Any degrees you have completed or are working on, as well as relevant classes or certifications. Only include your GPA if it is very high.
Experience: List your past employers and/or major projects you have worked on. Start with the most recent.
Technology Summary: List only the technologies you know well.

6. Resume Tip 6: Have Multiple Versions
If you are in more than one role (or have skills that may fit more than one role) you should have multiple versions of your resume available that highlight those skills. For example, if you have years of experience as a software engineer, and also have project management expertise, have two resumes: one highlighting your software engineer experience and another highlighting your project management experience.

7. Resume Tip 7: Make Your Resume Viewable
Recruiters and hiring managers like to search and "source" for candidates. If your resume (or bio) is not someplace where an employer can find it, then they don't know you exist. In addition to the regular job boards, consider posting your resume on personal web pages, as well as networking tools such as:

The results surprised researchers, showing a 15% increase from a year earlier.

Net services seem to have escaped the recession with Americans more willing to cut back on mobile phone usage or cable TV than broadband.

Of those who still were not connected, 17% said it was because the technology was not available in their area.

Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they had cancelled or cut back on cable TV services or mobile phone services but only 9% said they had cancelled or cut back on broadband services.

"For many Americans a home broadband connection is a conduit for connecting to community and economic opportunity," said John B Horrigan, associate director of the Pew Internet Project.

"That puts broadband in the 'must keep' category for most users, even when economic times are tough."

Rural growth

Broadband users were asked how they viewed the importance of broadband in their lives.

Over half (55%) said that it was very important to at least one dimension of their lives, such as communicating with health care providers, the government or sharing information about the community.

Americans over 65 showed a 58% increase in adoption while low income families also showed growth.

The number of families living on household incomes of less than £18,000 with broadband connections grew by to 35%, a 40% increase on the previous year.

Rural Americans using broadband also grew to 46%, a 22% growth from last year.

But take-up of broadband among African Americans continued to rate below average, with less than half (46%) using a fast net service.

In the UK a similar survey by the Oxford Internet Institute found that twice as many people from higher than lower socio-economic use the internet, while the percentage of retired people online had risen just 4% since 2003 to 34%.

Representatives of the four host nations of the World Cup 2011 will meet at Lord's today to discuss what can be done with the 14 matches that were originally scheduled for Pakistan. The recommendations from this meeting will be taken up by the ICC's commercial board that will meet on June 25 as part of the governing body's annual conference.

ICC president David Morgan, vice-president Sharad Pawar and Pakistan board chairman Ijaz Butt met on Friday to discuss the best manner in which a decision could be reached on Pakistan's matches. "I am pleased we have made progress on this matter," Morgan said. "We believe we have come up with that means now, through the meeting of the host countries, and if they are able to produce a recommendation when they meet on Saturday then that can be tabled for consideration by the ICC's commercial board next Thursday."

As per last week's meeting, it was decided that Pakistan would not host matches in the 2011 tournament because of the security situation in the country but the PCB will be recognised as hosts and retain fees from its original allocation of 14 matches. Morgan had said the ICC would consider outsourcing Pakistan's matches to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, though co-hosts India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were keen to have the matches remain in the subcontinent.

Cricket's punishing international schedule prompted Michael Hussey to contemplate retiring from at least one form of the game. Hussey revealed he had used his recent sabbatical from cricket to evaluate his future and, after careful consideration, opted to continue in all three formats for Australia.

Once renowned as an indefatigable force in Australia's middle order, Hussey conceded that the constant grind of touring life had left him "mentally washed" during Australia's recent tour of South Africa. The ensuing directive by selectors to rest him from the one-day series against Pakistan provided Hussey with time to review his commitment to the game and, on the eve of his first away Ashes series, he admitted there was a difficult balance to find.

"I just threw it up in my own mind and thought, 'Well, is it something that we should be looking at?'" Hussey said. "I think probably a few of the guys were throwing it around. It's a difficult choice to make if you had to, but for me I don't really want to make that choice.

"I've thought about it a little bit. I would find it quite hard to come in and go out for one particular form. For me personally I want to try and play as much as I can. It took me so long to get one opportunity to play for Australia so I would like to play as much as I possibly can because I know my shelf life is a bit shorter than other guys who were able to start a bit younger."

The hype of an Ashes series coupled with a recent batting trough - he has scored 322 runs at 23.00 in his past eight Tests - prompted Hussey to admit he was feeling under more pressure than at any stage of his international career. That, he says, has placed a greater emphasis on Australia's tour match against Sussex at Hove, during which a number of players will be aiming to boost confidence and impress selectors.

"There's always a lot of pressure and I don't think there's any more pressure than coming into an Ashes series," he said. "Probably this is the most pressurised I've felt but that's just because we're playing up to this series right now.

"Everyone is going to be very keen to do well because I think we're all shooting for places in the first test team. Probably other than the captain, vice captain and a couple of other key players I don't think anybody can rest on their laurels. For me personally I'm really keen to get a couple of big scores and get the confidence up high coming into that first Test.

"I would like to really get a couple of good scores under my belt just so I can go into that first Test with some confidence under belt after not having played for quite a while and also not performing as well as I would have liked in the last couple of series."

Hussey has been impressed with England's performances under the stewardship of Andy Flower, and believes the current squad boasts greater depth than that of four years ago. England underwent a period of painful regression immediately after its 2005 Ashes triumph when a succession of injuries struck key personnel. And though the current line-up does not possess the intimidatory presence of four years ago, Hussey feels this England squad has more quality players at its disposal.

"Someone like [Graham] Onions has come in and done well, Anderson is a much better bowler than he was when he came to Australia last time, Stuart Broad has been bowling very," he said. "Plus I think their batsmen have been doing very well. I think they probably do have more depth than they did last time around."

Hot News - InFocus / The Stanford meltdown
Jun 20, 2009, 02:57 PM
When Allen Stanford began to invest - to the tune of millions of dollars - in cricket in 2005, he was painted as the saviour of the game in the West Indies. In February 2009, though, shortly after it was announced he was re-evaluating his association with Caribbean cricket, Stanford was charged by the USA's Securities and Exchange Commission of a "fraud of shocking magnitude".

Two days after their World Twenty20 campaign ended, the Indian team has landed in Jamaica for their next assignment, a four-ODI series against West Indies.

India have been in great form in one-dayers over the past ten months, losing only three dead matches from 18 games. West Indies performed strongly in the World Twenty20 after a forgettable show against England in the Tests and one-dayers.

"I think it's going to be a competitive cricket (series) and we are looking forward to it," MS Dhoni said. " West Indies is playing good cricket at the moment. They are having a very good World Twenty20 tournament, but in the 50 overs, you have time to settle down."

India are missing four first-team players on the tour - Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina - but coach Gary Kirsten said this was a chance for the youngsters to shine. "You're always going to miss them because they are great players, but it's a great opportunity for a tour of this nature for young players to show what they're made of."

The first of four one-dayers is on June 26 in Kingston.

At the very heart of Pakistan's invigorating run to a second successive World Twenty20 final has been a player you might think was put on the planet to play Twenty20 cricket. A three-four over bash with the bat, a quick four-over spell hustled through the middle overs and some adrenaline-fuelled cheerleading in the field: thanks very much, Shahid Afridi.

Having been the Player of the Tournament in the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, Afridi was expected to be a key component again this time. His form in the immediate run-up to the tournament, especially with ball in hand, had been outstanding and even with the bat, against Australia, a brief vigour had re-emerged. And with ten wickets, 122 runs, potentially the catch of the tournament and a semi-final all-round performance to match any, Afridi has again staked his claim for top individual honours.

The catch to dismiss Scott Styris off Umar Gul, running back to long-on and taking it at full-stretch over his shoulder - "any player, any piece of fielding, batting or bowling, can do that," said Afridi - was the moment at which Pakistan's tournament turned. And he followed it up with what he considers to be among his best individual performances against South Africa. "Without a doubt it's up there. I've put in some good matches in the past, but to do it in such a big-game, in a semi, against such a strong side, it has to be up there," Afridi told Cricinfo. "Wickets were down, the pressure was on and it was such an occasion, it makes it very special."

The improvement in Afridi's bowling has been among the more remarkable sights in cricket, all the variety, threat and control apparent in his spell of 2 for 16 against South Africa. As significant have been three contributions with the bat, culminating with an eminently sensible 51 in the semi-final. "I don't know if I'm at my peak with the ball but certainly I've put a lot more effort into it. Nothing extraordinary, just hard work," he said.

LONDON (AFP) — Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara hailed Tillekaratne Dilshan as a "pioneer" after the opener hit an unbeaten 96 to lead his side past West Indies and into the World Twenty20 final.

Sri Lanka cruised to a comfortable 57-run win at the Oval and will now take on Pakistan in the final at Lord's on Sunday.

"I have run out of superlatives for Dilshan. He is a pioneer stroke-maker in Twenty20," said Sangakkara on Friday.

"The best thing is that he understands his role and has become very responsible and mature. He has finally understood how good he is."

Dilshan's knock was the centrepiece of Sri Lanka's 158 for five with his 57-ball innings, which featured two sixes and 12 fours, the equal third-best in Twenty20 international history.

Fellow opener Sanath Jayasuriya (24) and Angelo Mathews (12 not out) were the only other Sri Lankan batsmen to reach double figures.

Mathews then took three wickets in the first over of the West Indies reply and the Caribbean side never recovered as they finished on 101 all out with captain Chris Gayle carrying his bat for 63 not out.

"It's Mathews's first major international tour and you can't ask for much more than three wickets in the first over," added Sangakkara.

"To get three top order batsmen out is a great start. We have a great bowling attack, they are all thinking cricketers.

"Now we will take this confidence into the final against Pakistan. We'll concentrate on getting our basics right, we'll be responsible and execute our game plan."

Dilshan said he was learning all the time in the international arena.

"I got the start I wanted. I've been in good form in the last six months in the IPL and in international cricket," said the opener, who was named man of the match.

Gayle said the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow after his bowlers had limited the flamboyant Sri Lankans to 158-5.

"I'm very disappointed. I thought batting was our strength," said Gayle.

"Dilshan took the game away from us. But we have struggled to get a start and get runs on the board.

"We'll come back as a better unit and learn things from this."

Discerning the burgeoning demand for cars that run on alternate fuel like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), a number of car companies like GM, Hyundai, etc, Toyota, Maruti, M&M are in the process of launching an array of models in such segments shortly, especially in the models of their C and D segment, reports The Economic Times exclusively.

General Motors India has also kept its fingers crossed on the CNG and LPG variants of Chevrolet Spark; Chevrolet Aveo U-VA; and Chevrolet Aveo. According to industry sources, The CNG variant of the Chevrolet Optra is already being offered in Mumbai, Delhi and Vadodara, largely due to the fact that the fuel is available in these cities. The company will now offer alternate fuel variants of its other models like Aveo.

"Our strategy is to have high fuel efficiency in all our vehicles in the first place. Then we will be introducing vehicles powered by (alternative) fuels like CNG and LPG, besides having different power-trains and different displacements," General Motors India president (GMI) and managing director Karl Slym was quoted as saying to the mediamen nearly 3-4 months back. The company will be launching an LPG-driven car in the first half of this year, without specifying details, adding it would be followed by other LPG vehicle

Likewise, Maruti Suzuki India limited (MSIL) is also planning to roll out CNG-driven cars by early 2010. ET has reported that Maruti has firmed up its plans to roll out both CNG and LPG version of its mid-size car-SX4, whose volumes have decimated after third-generation Honda City's launch last year.

Toyota Innova, India's most popular multipurpose vehicle, now also provides customers a more economical and environment friendly driving option with the availability of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered version. Available in all petrol grades of the Innova, this is India's first ever energy efficient multipurpose vehicle. The company has gone a step further by drawing up plans to come out with a CNG version of its D-segment sedan-Corolla Altis. Skoda's Octavia model, which is also in the same segment, is likely to be equipped with the Czech automaker's Greenline technology that uses 10 per cent less fuel than the other traditional 1.9 TDI models.

Even though global automakers like Mercedes-Benz, etc are bearish about the American and other developed markets, their sentiments are understood to be quite bullish towards emerging markets like India. The company has reaffirmed its expansion plans and has said that the economy is expected to bounce-back over the medium-term and the growth prospects are immense from this country. Furthermore, company will go ahead with its product launch plans which include its latest E-class series and a host of other models along with variants of its existing models. Furthermore, the Indian arm of the German luxury car maker will invest about Rs. 150 crore in its new facility at Pune in Maharashtra, while a similar amount has been earmarked for upgrading and increasing its retail network in the country. Until now, Mercedes-Benz India had invested about Rs. 250 crore in the manufacturing plant where its passenger cars, trucks and buses are assembled. It will also be roping in another 80 engineers at its R&D centre in Bangalore, where its current strength is 220. It is to be mentioned that there are 10 engineers working in the R&D centre of the car maker in Pune.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz assembles C and E-Class range which now account for indigenisation level of up to 40-50 per cent. However, the S-Class range, which is also assembled in India, has 25 per cent local content. Furthermore, with its new state-of-the-art plant in Pune already going on stream, the Indian arm of the German luxury carmaker claims that it can add more value to buyers and bring about necessary customisation and address preferences. The company has a capacity to manufacture 5,000 cars a year/shift at the new plant commissioned in February. To beat recession, Mercedes-Benz has introduced several innovative schemes by tying up with banks. The German automaker, which addresses the Rs. 25 lakh-and-above segment, accounted for nearly half of this market with overall sales of 3,625 cars (2,415 in 2007) of the 7,500 cars sold in this segment in 2008.

According to a senior representative of Mercedes-Benz India, Mercedes car can be tailor-made for Indian consumers if the car maker is able to have enough volumes in the domestic market. The representative said the Indian government should do a rethink on charging higher excise duty on luxury cars if they want the manufacturers of these cars to set up a full-fledged plant in the country as it will lead to increase in employment as well as more contracts for auto component manufacturers.

In its bid to cash in on the opportunities emerging in the Indian market. In this regard, the company will be rolling out new models, especially low-floor buses, and three axle buses, in the next 12-15 months. Furthermore, it is also looking at launching different models of trucks, in phases. Currently, high-end trucks from Mercedes stable, used mainly in mining, are available in the country.

According to sources familiar with the development, Tata Motors is drawing up plans to roll out an electric car based on its ultra-cheap car-Nano. If speculation is to be believed, the Indian automaker is likely to develop the model in cooperation with the Norwegian electric car company Miljoebil Grenland. The price and other specifications have not been yet finalised by Tata Motors.

According to sources who requested anonymity, Tata Motors has plans to use the Nano platform to build electric and hybrid cars, adding that the Nano is just not a car for Tata Motors; it is also a platform to create more high-end models that will sell for higher prices and yield better margins.

After Nano, Tata Motors gearing up to roll out its micro-hybrid version also and would also use stop-start technology, likely to be supplied by German engineering major, Bosch. This technology enables the car's engine to switch off automatically at a traffic light when idle and in neutral gear and the engine starts seamlessly once the driver depresses the clutch before moving forward. Though the technology will add another Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 6,000 to the Nano's cost, it would cut fuel bills by around 5 per cent. Bosch is also keen to offer this technology as an after-sales fitting. Currently, Bosch is supplying the fuel and braking systems for the Nano.

Nadine Jantjie's rape and murder has left the authorities at their wit's end.

They admit their efforts to safeguard children are not enough and have acknowledged that family units need to be strengthened, as children who are murdered are most often killed by relatives.

She is busy appointing a children's commissioner in the Premier's Office. At the national level talks are under way to implement systems for protecting children

Barack Obama has stepped up his criticism of Iran in the wake of the country's disputed presidential election - and told its leaders the world is watching them.

The US President criticised Tehran for its violent response to a week of mass demonstrations, and insisted the protests must be allowed to proceed peacefully.

"I'm very concerned based on some of the tenor and tone of the statements that have been made and that the government of Iran recognise that the world is watching," he said.

"And how they approach and deal with people who are, through peaceful means, trying to be heard will, I think, send a pretty clear signal to the international community about what Iran is - and is not."

Iranian state media report that seven or eight people have been killed in unrest since the election result was published last Saturday.

Mr Obama has been less critical of the election than many European leaders, but the latest statement marks a clear ramping-up in tone.

It follows a speech by Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which he insisted last week's election was won fairly by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and was not rigged, as is claimed by defeated candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters: "The violence is being conducted by the government, right? The Revolutionary Guard, the pictures that we saw on Monday that the president reacted to, that was them."

"I think you're definitely witnessing something extraordinary," he said of the demonstrations. "I'm not sure that anybody even a week ago or so would have expected to see the courageous images that we're seeing now."

Scores of reformists have been arrested since the election result was published on June 13, and authorities have cracked down on both foreign and domestic media.

NEW YORK--Collins Osei, who had bought an iPhone 3G last year, came to the AT&T store Friday not to buy the latest-generation iPhone 3G S, but instead he wanted to downgrade to a less expensive Nokia phone.

Nokia 2600

(Credit: CBS Interactive)Osei said his decision to go back to a basic-feature phone was all about cost. The iPhone and its service plan are simply too expensive, he said. Osei, who is in the middle of his two-year contract with AT&T, had his iPhone 3G stolen recently. But he said replacing it with a new one would cost too much. Instead, he picked up a Nokia 2600 for a mere $43.

But Osei's decision didn't hinge just on the upfront cost of the phone. He also said he was tired of paying the additional $30 a month data charge that is mandatory with the iPhone.

"The iPhone plan was just too expensive," he said. "They made me pay $30 extra a month for data, and I don't really need the Internet on my phone. So I went back to a regular phone. And now I'm on a plan that costs $39.99 a month."

WWE last night released former Women's champion Candice Michelle along with second generation wrestler, Sim Snuka.

Neither come as a surprise. Michelle has been injured more often than not over the past few years and WWE had no plans for her after she was recently given the OK to return to the ring from her latest injury layoff.

Snuka has been in danger of being released for some time and it had been expected for several months. He had not been used for some time and was out of favour even since WrestleMania where he was the "cameraman" at ringside for the Undertaker-Shawn Michaels match who was supposed to break Undertaker's fall when he dived out of the ring. As you'll recall, Taker narrowly avoided serious injury there and the blame was put on Snuka.

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) The Australians might have had security concerns about India, but their legendary cricketer Steve Waugh feels the country is a safe place.
The security issues in India were raised post Mumbai terror attacks with Tennis Australia (TA) last month forfeiting their crucial Davis Cup-tie against India, which was to take place in Chennai from May 8-10.

Australia have also expressed apprehensions for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. Australian officials recently made a trip to India to assess the security situation for the mega-event.

Waugh, a frequent traveller to India whose association with leprosy children of Udayan, in suburban Kolkata, is well known, Friday said the Australian Davis Cup team could have traveled to India.

"I can't say on the behalf of the security personnels. All I can say that I was in Mumbai just couple of days after November attacks and I had no problems. In my opinion, India is safe and when you look back you feel they could have come," Waugh said at the

launch of the Steve Waugh Foundation Global and it's association with 6UP, the SMS service.

LONDON (AFP) — West Indian captain Chris Gayle is not losing heart after the semi-final loss in the World Twenty20 and has vowed to bounce back in the upcoming one-day series against India.

The West Indies exited from the tournament on Friday after a stinging 57-run defeat by Sri Lanka at the Oval, but Gayle said he was proud that his team had reached the semi-finals.

"Of course we are disappointed because we too wanted to be in the final, but that does not take anything away from the way the team has played through this tournament.

"I am proud of the boys, they put everything into it. We backed ourselves and came this far. It is a great learning experience for the younger players in the team.

"If they learn the lessons quickly we should be able to capitalise in home conditions when the World Twenty20 is held in the Caribbean next year."

Gayle hoped West Indian fans were happy at the team's performance in the tournament after it was routed 2-0 in the preceding bilateral Test series against England.

"Fans are very hard to please," said Gayle. "They only want victory everytime. I just want to say tough luck to the fans. But I hope they will keep supporting us and stop cursing.

"I say to my fans that we will fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee, we'll be back. What can I do about it? Ask Muhammad Ali!"

The West Indies were outplayed on Friday after Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 96 in Sri Lanka's 158-5 was followed by an astonishing first over from rising fast bowler Angelo Mathews.

Mathews claimed three wickets in five balls as the Windies slipped to 1-3 and were shot out for 101 despite Gayle carrying his bat for an unbeaten 63.

"The three wickets in the first over set us back and we could not overcome that as we kept losing wickets regularly," said Gayle.

"You need partnerships in any form of the game, but this is especially true of Twenty20 cricket.

"All credit to Dilshan for the way he batted. I thought we had a good start to keep them down in the first six overs and Dilshan was their only batsman among the runs.

"He just did not give us a chance and helped set a decent total for Sri Lanka."

Gayle said he looked forward to the four one-day matches against India in the Caribbean starting later this month.

"We will get back home for a few days and start another series soon," the West Indian captain said.

"India may not have made the semi-finals here and we did, but we start from scratch and have to do all the hard work again.

"India is always a good one-day team, so it is bound to be a tough series."

Asked whether he will put his money on Sri Lanka or Pakistan in Sunday's final, Gayle quipped: "I am broke, maan!"

"But we can't ask for a better final. We have two quality teams and so it should be a quality final."

LONDON (AFP) — Pakistan and Sri Lanka, two teams linked by tragedy, will contest the World Twenty20 final at Lord's on Sunday.

Six policemen and two civilians were killed, and seven Sri Lankan squad members injured, when militants launched a gun and grenade assault on their team bus as they travelled to a Test match in Lahore on March 3.

The incident led to the suspension of international cricket in Pakistan and dire fears for the national side's future.

But Pakistan, who beat favourites South Africa by seven runs in Thursday's semi-final, have bounced back in style at this tournament.

They will face unbeaten Sri Lanka in the final after their Asian rivals thrashed the West Indies by 57 runs at the Oval on Friday.

Despite the events in Lahore, Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said relations between the two sides had remained friendly.

"What Lahore really brought home to us was we are just the same as anyone else," he said.

"It happens to everyone and it happened to us. I always said it's nice to be reminded of your mortality when the press and everyone else around you builds you up to be a bit more than that in this sporting culture.

"It's great the way the guys have prepared mentally, the way they've shown no fear and just played cricket. It's a fitting reward for that attitude."

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 19 runs in a Super Eights match earlier at this tournament but Sangakkara said: "We've played Pakistan many times before but in T20 you must take every game in isolation. Different players come into form at different times.

"Hopefully, we can put in a good performance and walk away with a trophy."

The dangerous Shahid Afridi produced a brilliant all-round display in Pakistan's semi-final triumph, scoring 51 and then taking two wickets for 16 runs with his leg-spinners.

"He is a guy who can take the game away in few overs, but we can't just concentrate on him," said Sangakkara.

In Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, Sangakkara has two star spinners of his own although Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal should not be disregarded.

"Mendis, the way he's bowled in the middle overs had been a charm," Sangakkara said.

"Even Pakistan watch him closely, they know he can get their wickets."

Sri Lanka's semi-final victory was built on a brilliant innings from Tillekaratne Dilshan, the leading scorer at the tournament with 317 runs, who carried his bat for 96 not out in a total of 158 for five.

Then came a sensational first over in the West Indies' reply, which saw seam bowler Angelo Mathews take three wickets as Xavier Marshall, Lendl Simmons and Dwayne Bravo all played on for ducks.

Chris Gayle made 63 not out but none of the West Indies captain's colleagues could stay with the left-handed opener long enough to mount a serious chase as Sri Lanka won with 14 balls to spare.

Dilshan decided not to employ the 'Dilscoop' shot where he flicks the ball over the wicket-keeper's head and settled for more orthodox strokes.

"Now we've one more match, hopefully I can stay strong. I think I'll keep the paddle for the final," Dilshan explained.

Sangakkara, who said he expected something special from veteran batsman Sanath Jayasuriya in the final, added: "I have run out of superlatives for Dilshan. He is a pioneer stroke-maker in Twenty20.

"The best thing is that he understands his role and has become very responsible and mature. He has finally understood how good he is."

And as for Mathews, the captain said: "It's Mathews's first major international tour and you can't ask for much more than three wickets in the first over.

"Now we will take this confidence into the final against Pakistan."

Pakistan, who lost by just five runs to arch-rivals India in the inaugural 2007 World Twenty20 final in Johannesburg, are desperate to go one better this time.

The dark horses of this tournament, they have justified veteran coach Intikhab Alam's belief that they would be at their best when it mattered most.

"We want to make people back home happy," Pakistan captain Younus Khan said. "Winning the title will mean a lot to them and that will inspire us in the final. One more game and the World Cup will be ours."

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said: "You couldn't ask for a better final, they are two quality teams."

Opposition Leader Kim Swan kicked off an impassioned debate this afternoon in the House of Assembly on the motion of no confidence, calling on MPs from both sides to end Dr. Ewart Brown's "authoritarian, autocratic" leadership.

MPs were debating the motion put forward by the UBP that 'this Honourable House has no confidence in the Government led by the Premier'.

Mr. Swan called the events of the last eight days, since Dr. Brown's decision to allow four Guantanamo Bay detainees to resettle in Bermuda without telling his Cabinet, the Governor or UK authorities, an "international debacle".

"The motion before us continues to be a very important and serious motion before this House," he said. " I remember as a schoolboy, having somewhat of a voice, that could project quite well and carry a little bit of a tune and we used to sing a wonderful song, 'No Man is an Island'. In that regard let me say that indeed here today, part of the problem that we face here has been a result of a very few people acting on their own.

"It has plunged Bermuda into an international debacle that has damaged us internationally in many respects because we have not followed our constitution."

Mr. Swan was greeted by jeers from across the floor when he claimed his motion was never intended to oppose the PLP Government itself but the leadership of the Premier.

"Before I refer to the constitution let me make it perfectly clear that it was not the intention of the Opposition or this motion to do any harm to the Government. It was our intention to address the leadership of the Honourable Premier, the style of which has caused the country great harm."

Minister of Energy Terry Lister told the House that because the motion said there was no confidence in the Government, the focus should lie there.

He said in order for someone to lead the Country, he or she has to be able to withstand criticism.

As far as Government's accomplishments, Mr. Lister spoke about tourism.

"So what about tourism? We are working really hard to get a hotel for St. George's. The Minister of Tourism has a strategy. If you look hard enough you will see it is actually there and it works."

The Minister spoke about the decline of tourists to the Island and said even though cruise ship visitors might spend less money, less money is better than no money.

"If I can't get them on a bed I'll get them on a boat he [Dr. Brown] said. I thank the Minister of Tourism", he said.

He also spoke about gang violence on the Island.

"As the Government of this country, we are concerned and we want to bring about some change. This is a Government who are committed to its people."

Former Premier Alex Scott delivered a passionate speech to the House of Assembly and said Premier Ewart Brown's decision rocked all of Bermuda, not blacks or whites.

Mr. Scott told the House he 'Googled' Bermuda terrorism and the search engine asked him if he meant to write Bermuda tourism.

He said he couldn't believe how many links popped up for Bermuda in relation to terrorism — more than 800,000 — something that a just over a week ago wouldn't have happened. He said a search for Bermuda tourism generated three times as many links.

"We have been in tourism in Bermuda for how long? But terrorism now in one week or so is a third of the items that you can now associate if you are looking at Bermuda."

Mr. Scott said the security issue was a huge problem with this situation.

"If you have worn the hat or cloak of Premier you have to be concerned about the security about everybody in Bermuda and I think folks have somewhat misplaced the importance.

"The thought has been that the four represent a security risk to us. It is not from them that we should be concerned about our security it is from those that want to get at them that we may have to be concerned about security.

"Our Police Service does not have the depth that it would take to do security clearance on these gentlemen. Again not them, but those who want to get at them.

"But they are deemed to be in the eyes of the Chinese, terrorists we are made to understand. Flip the coin. Anybody that the US deemed to be terrorists, they're using the CIA to find them out. The UK are probably using MI5 to find out whatever they can."

Mr. Scott said he had spoken to Dr. Brown about the situation.

"I made the point that if I were in his position and if I am in possession of these four and I am asked didn't I think it is a foreign affairs matter, I too would have said I thought it was an immigration matter, a youth and sports matter and health matter and community and cultural affairs matter.

"I also said to the Premier he is more courageous than I or — and he filled in the blank.

"Foreign affairs are not to be picked up like you do the crossword puzzle in your daily paper. "

Mr. Scott spoke about the corruption that happened in Turks and Caicos and said: "Turks and Caicos accomplishments or failure, I would never want to see that happen here."

He also said he disagreed with the Premier's decision.

"We have done a humanitarian act for four men but I don't know what we have done for the 70,000 that reside here."

Mr. Scott said when he lost election in 2006, he should have walked away from politics and be watching this situation on TV or listening to it on the radio, but was convinced to stay because he cared about the country.

Mr. Scott appeared to suggest that the PLP's stated aim of inpendence had been set back by this incidents because he felt Britain's stance would have hardened.

He added: "Our image has taken a hit. We have been set back. We have done a humanitarian favour to four people but I do not know what we have done for the 70,000 who reside here.

"It is very uncomfortable standing here and reviewing and obliquely criticising both my leader and my party and in this case our Government, but this is not a normal state of affairs."

He added: "We have 36 people here who care about this country. The Premier cares about this country. You can't raise your hand, take that oath and walk away uncaringly about the responsibility you now have."

To Dr. Brown, Mr Scott said: "Where are we going from here? Take us along with you. Tell is what is expected of us and what we can expect of you. We can't take another hit like this. We really can't because I don't think we have felt the feel of it yet."

He said the motion had to be brought to the House and stressed the issue wasn't about party.

"This is not about PLP, this is about the Country. We have stumbled. We have really stumbled.

"We could turn to cabinet and say you stumbled but they weren't in on this one. We should turn to the Governor and say you permitted this but he didn't know about it. I believe this has gone to the hearts of many Bermudians."

Mr. Scott said he hoped the Premier has learnt his lesson.

Shadow Finance Minister E.T. (Bob) Richards told the House of Assembly of the potential damage done to Bermuda's international business reputation by the Premier's detainee decision.

"They don't like the wild card," he said of the international business sector. "They don't like surprises. The events of the past seven to ten days have caused an enormous amount of concern with international business insofar as it relates to the political risk associated with Bermuda."

Mr. Richards said that the Premier's decision to resettle the four Uighurs here without consultation could mean Bermuda has to "choose between China and the United States".

He noted China's rising economic power, adding that the recent recession had barely slowed down the country's growth.

He described "a big connection" between Bermuda and China, with 50 percent of the companies on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange being based in Bermuda.

In response to a comment from PLP MP Walter Roban that "Bermuda has no relationship with China at all," Mr. Richards reminded the House that HSBC stands for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, noting that 75 percent of the bank's pre-tax profits come from Hong Kong or mainland China.

"You still think we don't have a relationship with China?" he asked. "What if China blacklists Bermuda because of these actions? That alone makes his action detrimental to Bermuda, and the Premier of this country is supposed to be acting in the best interest of Bermudians."

He went on to describe the US "fear and loathing" of perceived terrorists and detainees post-9/11, saying he believes the Premier's actions will deter American tourists from choosing Bermuda for their vacation.

To a few cheers from the gallery, he said: "This issue has the fingerprints of Independence all over it."

PLP backbencher Wayne Perinchief started his speech by asking whether it was the Cabinet, Premier, Commissioner of Police, Governor, or Attorney General who acts as Bermuda's "gatekeeper".

"Who guards our constitution?" he asked. "I put these questions for a very salient reason, because all of those institutions were abrogated or breached in the latest action by our Premier, and I do specify Premier. I do not wish to malign the Honourable Dr. Ewart Brown in his person."

Mr. Perinchief told the House that the Premier had "egregiously offended" those in office, and questioned what the appropriate response would be from Bermuda's elected officials and appointed members.

"All some of us ask is that the Premier be subject to some consequences of his actions," he said.

He called the actions of the Premier "high handed", adding: "It does actually put us all in a position of saying, 'of what value does the administration hold elected officials?' Are we just a talk shop? Do we have any teeth or are we a toothless dog?"

To applause from the public gallery and murmurs of agreement from some Opposition MPs, he noted the role of Government: "We now make the laws — certainly we must uphold the laws."

He spoke of "the dictum of collective responsibility", and called the Government "liable vicariously through the actions of our Premier".

"After all, he was the one who we as Government put into that position," he said. "By that same Constitution we the members of this House have a responsibility to then say to the Governor, this person no longer is afforded the support of this honourable House."

He called on the Government rather than the Opposition to carry out "corrective, rehabilitative action".

"Though we may fuss and fight and sometimes disagree, we are charged with that responsibility," he said.

He told the Government not to blame the Opposition for this recent controversy, saying: "We cannot blame anyone but ourselves in this instance. We must look in the mirror, see where the flaws are and correct them. As a team we have to pull back and exert some control and some direction over our team captain."

Opposition MP Shawn Crockwell spoke to the House about the power of Bermuda's constitution. Calling the Premier's actions over the detainees a "blatant disregard" for the constitution's authority, he said: "The constitution also restricts our powers. It provides a limit to what we are and what we can do."

He called the Premier "very unpopular", noting that his performance in approval polls have been the lowest of leaders since polls began.

He alluded to Deputy Premier Paula Cox's relative popularity, saying: "We all know who is the natural successor — a certain Honourable Finance Minister."

Mr. Crockwell took issue with recent talk of a high turnout among whites to protest marches held this week, calling it "spin".

"The leader of that protest is a professed PLP member, yet we spin and we spin and we spin," he said. "This country has become dizzy by the spin."

He called the Premier's recent actions "unilateral", and closed with a question to PLP Cabinet ministers: "My question this afternoon to this Cabinet is, are you ratifying that behaviour today?"

PLP MP Michael Scott started his address to the House by letting his position on the motion of no confidence be known.

"This won't happen," he said. "Today is a debate in confidence in the Government and it will not result in the Government voting against itself."

Mr. Scott called the relationship between the UK and its overseas territories "afflicted with tension", and made a brief mention of recent controversy in theTurks and Caicos.

"The relationship is unhealthy; it is breaking down," he said of Bermuda's colonial ties to the UK. "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office better get accustomed to seeing more of this."

While conceding the controversy "should've been avoided", Mr. Scott defended the Premier's actions as "not typical of his tenure since 2007".

"By and large this appears to be a one-off action by this particular Premier on this particular front."

He also questioned Mr. Richards' portrayal of China's importance to Bermuda, calling any relationship "speculative at this stage".

"Let us not get a bloated view of ourselves," he said. "We are a dot."

He also found Mr. Richards' discussion of tourists' "fear and loating" to be a stretch of an argument.

"I find it in no way compelling," he said, adding that while he'd seen three tourists' opinions in the newspaper, "three tourists do not a summer make, or a summer season make."

Wayne Furbert was clear from the start that, as an Independent MP, he was answerable mainly to his constituents in Hamilton Parish, and had sought their views before making a decision on how to vote.

He also expressed the importance of "internal controls", saying that as a one-time auditor he has an understanding of the need for checks and balances.

"If we don't have checks and balances in our systems, in the world, things go out of whack," he said.

He also told the House he'd spoken to the Premier, and asked him why he made his controversial decision.

"He felt it was an immigration issue," Mr. Furbert said. "Commonsense tells me it had to do with more than Immigration."

Mr. Furbert said that while many of his Hamilton West constituents wanted the Premier to go, one thing was clear from his discussions: they wanted the PLP to remain in power.

"They want him to go, but not the PLP to fall," he said. "I cannot support this particular motion based on the understanding of my own constituents."

Mr. Furbert added that he had only made his decision the night before the vote.

He made some references to his Christianity and the notion of forgiveness, and said: "I forgive the Premier for what he did."

Derrick Burgess, Minister of Works and Engineering, told the House although Government might have made an error, they made the right decision.

He quoted the story of the good Samaritan from the Bible and said Bermuda was being the good Samaritan to these men.

The latest entrants to the Royal Gibraltar Police were on parade yesterday evening to mark the occasion of their completion of a 16 week rigorous basic training.

The passing out parade was held at John Macintosh Square. Twelve new police officers of this 1st intake of 2009 also received certificates of achievement. The band and corps of drums of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment was also be on parade in the presence of the Governor Sir Robert Fulton and the Chief Minister Peter Caruana.

Meanwhile Justice Minister Daniel Feetham congratulated the recruits.

He reminded the young officers that they were joining one of the most important institutions in the community and should rightly feel proud.

"Everywhere in the world policing requires particular qualities: integrity, courage, fairness, independence, and a good deal of common sense. In a small and closely knit community like Gibraltar, where we all know each other and where a policeman is likely to know an individual or a member of that individual's family or, indeed, their entire family, these are qualities that are even more important," he said.

Mr Feetham also referred to the reform of Gibraltar's criminal justice system including the introduction of wholesale reform of the criminal law and juries as well as the procedures in the force and the Courts operate such as Police and Criminal Evidence legislation.

Mr Feetham said it is almost three years since the creation of the Gibraltar Police Authority and the new Police Complaints Board.

"I believe we are already seeing the benefits of that new system in the public's participation in the annual Policing Plans and those plans themselves can only improve and develop the already close links between the RGP and the community," he said.

New Delhi: Maoist rebels in Lalgarh block in Midnapore district of West Bengal have offered to talk with the government three days after security forces launched operations against them.

The rebels, who are led by the extremist Communist Party of India-Maoists, want security operations againt them stopped and want officials to come into Lalgarh and speak to them.

Security forces on Saturday entered Lalgarh and were two km away from the police station, which is under Maoist control. A senior police officer said personnel of the CRPF, BSF, State Armed Police, Eastern Frontier Rifles and the Kolkata Police entered the besieged area after crossing a five-km stretch of the Jhitka forest, a Maoist stronghold, he said.

PTI reports troops were moving in armoured vehicles fitted with anti-landmine devices and mortars. Maoists, on Friday, put up stiff resistance to the advancing security forces in Lalgarh, carrying out surprise attacks and engaging them in heavy gunbattles on the second day of a massive operation launched by the West Bengal government to free the area of the leftwing radicals.

Two security personnel were injured in a landmine blast.

The rebels dug roads, burnt bridges and felled trees in the area, forcing the central and state police personnel to use firearms and slowed down their march to retake the rebel-held area in West Midnapore district. The forces also made baton charges and lobbed tear gas shells to chase the rebels.
