Students to Acquire English language Skills

KOZHIKODE

The Kozhikode Corporation has envisaged a project to facilitate students to acquire English language skills, with the assistance of the District Centre for English at Nadakkave here.Through theatre, which enacts real life situations, music and pantomime, the students will be given a platform to express their thoughts through a vibrant language, devoid of the "professed predictability."

The module for the teacher training programme prepared by the District Centre for English emphasises the need to overcome the rigidities of spoken English teaching. The programme for teachers titled 'Acquiring competence in theatre (Act)' would impart interaction skills and processes through practical and academic sessions.

K.T. Dinesh of the Centre
for English said the objective of the two-day training was to impart inputs to teachers on natural and informal language skills. The inputs for theatre are provided by Azhiyur Suveeran and Vasudevan, District Institute of Education and Training, Palakkad, sources said. The first teacher training programme in the series will be conducted shortly. It will be later taken to all schools in the Corporation area.

The programme is expected to equip teachers to provide opportunities to students to project and articulate with vocal meaning and dramatic expression, to retell or improvise stories from literature, demonstrate understanding of a character's point of view by writing, and speaking in character.
