"Health is a state of physical, mental and social well being"

DINDIGUL: Participation of communities, cooperation of individuals and massive awareness among masses were essential for effective implementation of any government scheme, particularly health schemes. Government alone cannot implement all schemes effectively.

These were highlighted at the World Health Day function at Oddanchatram near here on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police M.S. Muthusamy, in his guest address, said sociological needs pressed people to migrate to urban areas from villages.

Opportunities for better education, employment and transport and other facilities draws people towards cities.

With advancements in science and technology, several facilities in the field of education and health available in urban localities have been made available in rural areas, he pointed out. "We can lead a better life in a healthy atmosphere at villages."

In his special address, Joint Director of Health Services T. Jayabal said the main aim was to highlight the impact of urban living on human health and encourage efforts to make cities healthier places for the people to live. The motive behind this year's World Health Day was to focus on urbanization and health.

Every one should think of what should be done instead of what should not be.

Spreading of new diseases was due to destruction of nature, denudation of forests and drilling earth to draw water, he deplored. "If we protect nature, it will protect us."

Deputy Director of Health Services R. Balaji expressed grave concern over resurgence of communicable diseases.

Road accidents too were on the raise. Urbanisation was the main reason for such threats, he added.

Tamil Nadu Health System Project Coordinator A. Asai Thambi said health was a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not mere absence of diseases or infirmity.

Best teacher Chenni Shanmugam said real health was mental health and good personality.

Later, prizes were distributed to best performing nurses, 108 ambulance staff and winners of various competitions.
