Exhibition on school education begins

CHENNAI: A two-day exhibition on school education, being organised by the Chennai Corporation, began on Monday at the Corporation Higher Secondary School, Saidapet.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor M.Subramanian said "The new admissions to Corporation schools started on April 1 and the response has been encouraging. Around 915 students have been admitted to the schools."

A total of 743 students have been admitted to the I Standard and 172 students have been admitted to Standard VI on the first day of admissions, he said.

The Chennai Corporation Schools would be renamed on Thursday as Chennai Schools. He distributed admission cards to 80 students, including those who have dropped out of school sometime ago. The English medium schools of the Corporation had enrolled around 800 students last year, said Mr. Subramanian.

Parents should disseminate information about the education schemes of the Corporation for the benefit of other students in their neighbourhood, he added.

The results of Corporation schools have been better than other schools because of the welfare measures, he said.

The 29 stalls at the exhibition cover the measures initiated by the civic body for improving school education. It includes measures such as launch of special schools for students with disability, English education, scholarships, free shoes bags and school uniforms, computer training, community colleges and night shelters.

The exhibition has been organised to increase awareness of the initiatives taken by the Corporation and help more students belonging to the weaker sections gain access to better education, said Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. Deputy Commissioner Education M.Balaji participated.
