University plans to open constituent college in Theni

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) plans to establish a constituent college in Theni district. R. Karpaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, told members of MKU Academic Council here on Thursday that the college would come up with the support of grants from Central and State Governments. Land for the college had been identified at Kottur on the Theni-Cumbum highway. "We are expecting a grant from University Grants Commission after which the construction work for will begin," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor was replying to an adjournment motion moved by Academic Council member P. Gurusamy who requested the university to consider starting of a constituent college in Virudhunagar district. He made it clear that the university would take up the matter of opening such a facility in Virudhunagar district only after Theni.
"The objective of starting such a college in a rural area is to enhance the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education. Permission is being given to universities to open colleges in places where the enrolment ratio is less than five per cent." The Theni college would start functioning only after the buildings and other infrastructure was ready, and not in temporary buildings.
