GATE: success rate comes down

HYDERABAD: While the State rejoices over bagging the top rank of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year, the decline in the pass percentage indicates the poor quality of engineering education being offered.
There is a surge in the number of applicants this year for the GATE across streams but the success rate has come down sharply. GATE scores are considered for entry into post-graduate engineering courses with assured scholarships. Moreover, some companies also prefer GATE scores.
The sharp decline in the passes is being attributed to poor quality of education offered in engineering colleges apart from introduction of analytical questions. "This shows how our students are not prepared or trained. It reflects how they lack in core subject knowledge and also analytical skills," says K. Ramalinga Reddy, HoD of ETM Department at G. Narayanamma Institute of Technological Sciences.
