College teachers observe fast against formation of varsities

THANJAVUR: Members of Joint Action Council for College Teachers, comprising Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers' Association and Association of University Teachers' undertook a fast here on Tuesday urging the Government to stop the move to convert five Government colleges and two aided colleges into unitary universities.
T. Arivudai Nambi, State vice-president of Tamil Nadu Government Teachers' Association, inaugurated the fast.
Mr. Nambi said that conversion of colleges into universities would not help students in any way.
Funding problem
Already the Government is finding it difficult to fund universities. In this situation, funding may become a problem for new universities. Fees may go up and students may not get scholarship.
Wind up Kulandaiswamy panel
He said that the five-member committee to go into the matter of converting colleges into unitary universities under the chairmanship of V.C.Kulandaisamy should be wound up.
Rally planned
The agitation will be further intensified and a procession taken out at Kumbakonam on March 24.
Pudukottai
Nearly 120 Government college teachers of H.H.The Rajah's College and Government Arts College fort Women and Ganesar Senthamizh Kalloori near Ponnamaravathy in Pudukottai district led by C.Thiruchelvam, Associate Professor of H.H.The Rajah's College and secretary of Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers' Association, Tiruchi-Pudukottai Zone-5, observed fast near the old bus stand.
