School students learn nuances of making an extempore speech

MADURAI: Personality development largely banks on effective oratorical skills as they remain an inevitable component to stay competitive in this ever-expanding communication oriented world. It is a skill which is acquired through frequent trials and errors, The Hindu's Newspaper in Education concentrates in honing those skills with its 'speaking skills' module.

During a combined session for VIII and IX students of VKK Play Group Matriculation Higher Secondary School on Monday, the students were taught of what extempore speech was all about.

"Extempore speech is delivering a speech with little or no preparation or forethought and is made instantaneously on any topic in a given situation," said resource person Rajalakshmi Thiagarajan.

Stressing that sequencing the thoughts was vital to voice one's views, she said that the speaker should not get nervous and if he/she felt nervous it was better that they do not speak.

"Reading and concentration skills are needed for delivering an extempore speech, and once comfortable with the basic skills, it's easy to put forth the views which we wish to convey."

After teaching the basics, the students were asked to take the floor and give extempore speeches on their everyday experience of getting ready for going to school or about the most unforgettable incident in their life.

Later in the session, newspaper articles were given to the students and they were asked to read and understand the printed matter.

She was quick in correcting the mistakes and encouraged the students to shed their inhibitions and freely express their opinions to be effective in delivering extempore speeches
