School students at their creative best

MADURAI: Seated in rows and columns, carrying paint brushes along with their imagination, the bright young faces with glimmer of hope, occupied every available space at the main hall of the American College as anxious parents waited on the campus.

The 2009 edition of 'The Hindu Young World Painting Competition' was held in the city on Sunday with more than 400 children from various schools participating enthusiastically.

The juniors had to reproduce 'Flower Market' or 'My Classroom' for the on-the-spot painting competition while for the seniors it was 'Republic Day parade' or 'Watching a cricket match in the stadium.'

As soon as the drawing sheets were given, the children tried their hand with colours of all hues letting loose their creativity with artistic strokes.

One wonders how much the idea of the recent past has its influence in our everyday lives as most of the paintings on watching the cricket match was about the recent one-day series between India and Australia as blue and yellow became the prominent colours on the field in the sheet.

At the end of the two-hour competition, judges T. Shanmugasundaram of Al Ameen School and artist K.A. Murugesan were left with the daunting task of choosing the 10 best paintings each from junior and senior categories.

Noted theatre personality and popular film actor M. Shanmugaraja was the Chief Guest. In his address, he said that opportunity was the most crucial element in an artist's life and with adequate opportunities and the indomitable spirit to do well nothing could be hindrance to achieve glory.

Lauding The Hindu for providing a platform to students of more than nine southern districts, he said that his early exposure to painting skills during college days had helped a lot in his performance on stage and screen.

Citing Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh's life, he asked the students to be committed and work hard to reach greater heights.

Carrying with him neat hard-bound back issues of Young World, a supplement of , he said that the competition was witnessing a considerable increase in the number of participants from rural places. Composition, colour balance, fresh ideas and aesthetics were the criteria for selecting the best paintings, Mr. Shanmugasundaram told the audience.
