World's top tech universities

A recent study from Times Higher Education and QS Top Universities ranked the world's top 100 universities. The study ranked universities based on an international survey of 9,000 academics who assessed institutions' research facilities, teaching quality, and their ability to recruit staff and admit students.

Though the ranking shows the advance of academia in Asia, sadly none of the Indian universities could make it to the Top 100. The list is dominated by North America, which has as many as 36 universities in the list, this is, however, down from last year's 42.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Topping the list of technology universities is US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at number 9, maintaining its last year's position.

With the mission to "advance knowledge in science and technology", the university scores 96.1 on a scale of 100 in the survey.

Located on 168 acres along the Cambridge side of the Charles River Basin, MIT has five schools and one college that houses 34 academic departments, divisions, degree-granting programmes as well centers and laboratories.

Along with Computer Science, the university offers courses in Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering in Materials Sciences and Nuclear Science Engineering.

California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

At no 10 on the list of Top 100 universities is California Institute of Technology. This year the university slipped 5 positions from its last year's ranking.

Scoring 95.9 on a scale of 100, California Institute of Technology offers programmes in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Graduate Studies.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

At No. 35 on the list of world's 100 Top universities is Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The university improved its standing in the global tally by four ranks, jumping to No. 35 from last year's 39th position.

The university scored 83.3 points on a scale of 100. Having over 8,000 students and 400 faculty member, the university offers programmes in Biological Sciences, Business/Management, Computing/Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, Communications/Media, Economics, Mathematics and more.

Founded in 1991, the university was founded by Dr Hon Sze-Yuen Chung, and the then Governor Sir Edward Youde. The university ranked at No. 26 in this year's World's Top 100 Universities in Engineering and IT. It stood at No. 4 on the World's Top 200 Asian Universities (2009).

Tokyo Institute of Technology

At No. 55 is Tokyo Institute of Technology scoring 76.3 points. The university jumped 6 ranks to stand at No. 55, from last year's 61 position. Specialising in science and technology, the university offers programmes in Computing/Information Technology, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Civil/Structural Engineering and Physical Sciences.

The university has been actively engaged in research in new fields and interdisciplinary areas of science and technology. Founded in 1881 as Tokyo Vocational School, it got the status of university in 1929.

The university houses Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Bioscience and Biotechnology, the Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, and the Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology.

Technical University of Munich (TUM)

Sharing laurels with Tokyo Institute of Technology is Technical University of Munich scoring 76.3 points at no 55. Last year the university stood at No. 78. Germany-based TUM offers wide range of studies in engineering, natural sciences, life and medical sciences and economics.

The course programme contains about 130 courses of study, 95% with bachelor and master degrees. The university has double diploma agreements with more than 20 universities and partnerships with around 140 universities worldwide.

Founded in 1868, the university has over 23,000 students, 420 professors and 6,500 staff members. Since its inception, TUM has six nobel prizes to its credit.

Delft University of Technology, Netherlands

Next on the Top 100 technology universities is Netherlands-based Delft University of Technology at no 83. The university figured at the 78th spot last year.

Scoring 70.5 points, the university is country's largest technical university with over 15,000 students, 2,700 scientists including 200 professors.

The university offers programmes in Biological Sciences, Computing/Information Technology, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physical Sciences and others.

Georgia Institute of Technology

At No. 86 on the world's Top 100 universities list is US-based Georgia Institute of Technology scaling three spots down from last year. Georgia Institute of Technology scored 70 points on a scale of 100. The university's campus occupies 400 acres in the heart of the city of Atlanta. With over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students, Georgia Tech endeavours to provide one of the best infrastructure for technology education.
