Diploma course on Periyarism introduced

TIRUCHI: The Centre for Periyar Studies of Bharathidasan University has introduced a one-year part time (non-semester) Diploma course on Periyarism.

The course comprises papers such as History of Indian Materialism, Life and Mission of Periyar, Periyar Thoughts and Indian Social Reformists and Periyar. The certificate will be issued by the University.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Diploma course held at the university premises here on Monday, its Vice-Chancellor, M. Ponnavaikko said Periyar belonged to the world community.

Describing Periyar as a great social reformer, he said that Periyar organised a lot of movements against social injustices that prevailed during his time.

The Dravidar Kazhagam, general secretary, K. Veeramani, who was the chief guest, said Periyar fought hard to bring about a transformation in the society.

Periyar did not visit libraries, instead read people, their life and laid emphasis on self respect.

While propagating self respect, Periyar also fought for women's equality and rights.

Calling upon the student community to read books on Periyar, he said it was essential to spread the ideals of the great leader.

The Professor and Head, Centre for Periyar Studies, K. Nedunchezhiyan spoke on the occasion.
