'Over 80,000 passports issued in one year'

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Passport Office opened on September 14, 2008, has issued a little over 80,000 passports in one calendar year and is marching towards the milestone of achieving one lakh passports mark soon, said Passport Officer B. Balamurugan on Tuesday.

Mr. Balamurugan told The Hindu that despite manpower constraints and surging number of applications every day, the passport office had kept pace with the increasing workload.

A cursory glance of statistics revealed that of the total 70,300 applications received under the ordinary category more than 56,000 passports had already been issued. The remaining applications were in various stages of processing.

Under the Tatkal scheme, Mr.Balamurugan said that of the 19,100 applications received so far more than 18,950 passports had been issued.

Under the miscellaneous category, of the 5,850 applications received the passport office had so far issued 5,700 passports.

The miscellaneous category applications pertained to address change, spouse name endorsement, Emigration Check Not Required endorsements and so on.

Mr. Balamurugan said that despite submission of applications at the post offices and district passport cells functioning at the Collectorate, the passport office here continued to be crowded on Mondays and Fridays.
Verification reports

To avoid complaints of delay in issue of passport, the passport office was periodically in touch with the heads of police units reminding them on the pending police verification reports, the Passport Officer added.
