JNTU-K to make physical exercise compulsory

Kakinada: JNTU-Kakinada Vice-Chancellor Allam Appa Rao said he was thinking of making physical exercise compulsory for students in all the 226 colleges under the university purview to keep them engaged in a healthy lifestyle which would help in curbing ragging.

"Wholesome development of a student can be achieved through sound body and mind and that can be achieved through physical activity only," he said in the 2nd annual general body meeting of physical directors of JNTU-K affiliated colleges here on Friday.

On the occasion, Prof. Rao said physical directors had an important role to play at a time when new students were entering colleges with lots of dreams and hopes. The physical directors should play an active role in keeping the students in good spirit. If physical directors find a solution for mental relief, ragging could perhaps be put to an end.
Cultural activities

The Vice-Chancellor observed that lack of cultural activities, like drama, play etc. was putting enormous stress on students. Physical directors could contribute here too enormously. Students have to be made to strictly follow a regimen of studies, practices, self learning, mental and physical relaxation to ensure that they performed well in studies and did not take to vices. Prof. Rao further said that consequent upon the Association of Indian Universities allowing JNTU-K teams to participate in university sports and games competitions with separate identity, he planned to send some 20 teams to participate in inter-university competitions all around India from the current year.

It was also contemplated to have physical education department in every affiliated college so that sports and games could be made an integral part of education.

Andhra University physical director M. Syam Babu, JNTU-K Engineering College principal E.V. Prasad and others took part in the deliberations.
