Timer Control

Hi all!
Since iam new to VB i have a lot of doubt regarding the use of the tools.
I shall ask each doubt in a separate thread so i can understand ur replies...

how to use the timer control to do a particular part of  a program at certain intervals...?
i have to send data to COM port at regular intervals... how do i do that?
please help me...
