BU Syndicate member alleges MBA seat racket

BANGALORE: Bangalore University's Syndicate member A.P. Ranganath has sought to draw Governor H.R. Bhardwaj's attention to an alleged racket in the allotment of MBA seats in several leading educational institutions in the city.

Although the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) conducts the Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) for admission to MBA programmes, certain private educational institutions had been accused of "blocking" the seats through devious means only to be later filled by students offering them capitation fees, Mr. Ranganath alleged.

In a letter to the Governor, Mr. Ranganath said a candidate, who was not interested in joining the course, was made to appear for the entrance examination and block a seat in a particular college. The candidate collected letter of choice of college from the counselling centre, but did not get admitted.

The seat blocked by him was shown as "allotted". But later when the candidate did not show up and the seat fell vacant, the managements filled it up through its discretionary quota.

Similarly, the college managements deputed a student, who was already studying in I or II semester MBA to take up the PGCET by producing fake documents.

After appearing for the entrance examination, the student chooses a seat in the same college during the counselling and blocks it. The student never appears and the blocked seat falls vacant.
