Students exhibit technological productivity

TIRUCHI: Generating innovative ideas and translating them into products, integrating opportunities to exhibit creativity within the academic schedule, orienting students to the needs of industries...

PEACE '09 (Projects of Electronics and Communication Engineering) organised jointly by the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) department and Centre for Academic Excellence (CAE) of the Anna University – Tiruchi (AU-T), on Friday, reflected all these purposes.

The response to the second edition of the exhibition was quite encouraging. The number of participants had more than doubled over last year, observed one of the judges, S. Raghavan, Professor, Department of ECE, National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T). About 223 exhibits under the categories: Wireless Communication, Embedded System, Software Application, Control Application, and General Electronics Application, displayed by over 600 students from 75 colleges from all parts of the State, reflected the keenness of the participants to exhibit their technological productivity. The objective was to get beyond classroom teaching and lab practicals, explained the Coordinator of the technology exhibition and Head, Department of ECE, M. Bhuvaneshwari.

Models depicting new ideas included microstrip and coplanar wave guide technology-based metamaterial split ring resonator for use as antenna, self adaptable irrigation system using light dependent resistor and mobile phone and the one on operation of robot in eight directions from remote places won the admiration of the judges. P. Seethalakshmi, Director, CAE, addressed the valedictory session when the prize-winners were honoured. The best project awardees received a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 each, and for innovation award, the cash prize was Rs. 3,000 to each team.

The best project prize-winning teams were: Embedded system - Advanced Voting Machine Based on Embedded Technology by Mookambikai College of Engineering; Wireless Communication - Multi-device remote control using frequency modulation by A.R.G. College of Engineering, Mannaragudi, and Cell Phone Operated Life Saving Robot by Mahalingam College of Engineering, Pollachi; Software Application - Virus removing tool by SKP Engineering College; Control Applications - Fire extinguishing Robot by S.K.R. Enginering College and General Electronics - Collision prevention at unmanned level crossings by Paavendar Bharathidasan College of Engineering and Technology, Loan Watcher (a device to track debtors) by KLN College of Information and Technology, Madurai.
