Focus is on higher education

Kaup (Udupi district): Home Minister V.S. Acharya said on Monday that the State Government was giving importance to higher education. It was establishing many new universities in the State, including Horticulture University in Bagalkot; Agriculture University in Raichur; Music University in Mysore; Law University in Hubli-Dharwad; and a Sanskrit University, he said.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Government First Grade College here he said education system in the State should gear up to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Dr. Acharya said that a number of technological and scientific developments had been taking place in the last few decades. Technology was progressing at a faster pace now than any time before. It was essential that the syllabi and the curricula in schools and colleges kept pace with these changes. Otherwise, there was a real fear of the country being left behind, he said. The number of government high schools in the State had increased from 638 in 1965 to over 11,000 now. The number of pre-university and degree colleges in the State was rising steadily in the last two years, he said. The Government had set up a State Knowledge Commission. The experts in this commission were expected to recommend ways and means of improving the education system in the State, he said.

D.V. Sadananda Gowda, MP, said that the State Government was giving priority to human resource development. It was essential to improve the skills of students,he said.

MLA Lalaji Mendan, MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, in-charge president of Udupi Zilla Panchayat Gerald Fernandes, and in-charge president of Udupi Taluk Panchayat Katapady Shankar Poojary were present.
