Bangalore University withdraws re-evaluation fee hike

BANGALORE: The delay in the despatch of a circular by Bangalore University to its affiliated colleges withdrawing the recent increase in re-evaluation fee saw hundreds of students from different colleges gather on Central College campus and hold a demonstration.

Although the Bangalore University, at its recent Syndicate meeting, decided to withdraw the increase in re-evaluation fee from Rs. 350 to Rs. 1,050, the affiliated colleges continued to collect the increased fee as they did not receive any communication to the effect from the university authorities.

A large number of students from Maharani’s Arts College, R.C. College, Vivekananda Law College, Seshadripuram College and Koramangala Arts College among others responded to a call for protest given by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday.

“The re-evaluation fee has been tripled. Poor and meritorious students, who will not be able to cough up such a huge amount for re-evaluation, will be subjected to grave injustice. Although Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor assured us that the increase has been withdrawn, the colleges claim that they have not received any communication in this regard,” said Organising Secretary of ABVP, Bangalore, Vasanth Kumar. They withdrew their protest after Higher Education Minister Aravind Limbavali reached the venue and received their memorandum and invited the student representatives for talks to settle not only the issue relating to increase in re-evaluation fee, but also discuss their other demands, including the “exorbitant” fee collected by the university for “self-financed courses”.

University Registrar Sanjay Vir Singh told The Hindu that the university had sent a circular to all colleges on August 18.

Meanwhile, most colleges received the university circular on withdrawal of re-evaluation fee of August 18 only on Thursday.

Principal of Surana College A.S. Chandramouli said they received the circular only on Thursday.
Refund proposed

The Minister at a meeting with Bangalore University officials on Thursday proposed that the university refund the excess fee collected for e-evaluation.
