KOTTAYAM: The Mahatma Gandhi University Senate which met here on Saturday unanimously adopted a resolution asking the authorities for creation of new posts and filling of vacancies in view of the additional workload consequent on the implementation of choice-based credit and semester system at the under-graduate level.

The Senate expressed serious concern over the existing ban on appointments since 1997 when the pre-degree programme was delinked from the university system. Moving the motion, demanding filling of the vacancies on a war footing, K. Sherafuddeen, representative of the university employees in the Senate, said the university had only 105 affiliated colleges when pre-degree was delinked in 1997.

During the past 12 years, the university has added another 133 colleges, 76 off-campus centres, and 25 university owned self-financing professional institutions. However, no new appointments have been made. Introduction of credit and semester system 2001 had only aggravated the situation, he said. E.S. Bijimol, MLA, supported the resolution.
