Exhibition of pride and patriotism by the youth School NOTES

BANGALORE: Children displayed patriotism and national pride at the 63rd Independence Day celebrations held at schools that are part of The Hindu's NIE programme.

At Jain International Residential School, the celebration was a combination of a formal parade in the morning followed by flag-hoisting by personnel from the Army and the Air Force and a speech by the students on freedom fighters. The evening was marked by inter-house competitions such as patriotic dance and role plays.

At this year's celebration, Group Captain P.A. Nair, unfurled the national flag and took the salute. The march past was judged and the houses were awarded points. The students put in their best effort to win points for their respective houses. After the parade, the school choir presented patriotic songs. A student, Vikrant, gave a speech in Hindi, which was inspiring and thought-provoking. The patriotic dance competition held in the evening brought out the best in the children. They performed dances dedicated to the country. The school band rocked the crowd with a few English numbers.

In the junior category, Buddha House won the first prize, while Mahaveer House took the honours in the senior category.
At Ryan

Col. Menezis unfurled the national flag at the Independence Day celebrations in Ryan International School, Kundalahalli. He urged the students to wear their mantle of responsibility for the "uplift" of their country and to protect it from separatist forces.

He reminded the students that they were standing on the shoulders of the heroes of our democratic country. Father Nathanial Cruz of Redemptory's Mater College was the guest of honour.

Speeches were presented and this was followed by songs and dances reflecting the spirit of freedom and saluting the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

Meritorious achievers of Ryan in various competitive exams were then felicitated. A skit depicting the ethos of national integration was the highlight of the celebratory proceedings.
Investiture

The formal appointment of student council leaders of Al-Ameen School, Hosur Road, was made at the investiture ceremony held recently. The student leaders promised to shoulder the responsibilities assigned to them. Mirza Ali Abaaz, professor, administered the oath and pinned badges.
