Award for VIT University V-C

VELLORE: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has bestowed the UGC National Swami Pranavananda Saraswati Award for 2005 on D.P. Kothari, Vice-Chancellor of VIT University, Vellore, in recognition of his outstanding scholarly contribution. The award carries a citation and a cash component of Rs. 50,000.

According to a release from the VIT University, Mr. Kothari is the recipient of the National Khosla Lifetime Achievement Award 2005 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, National Award for Science and Technology from the Uttar Pradesh government in 2001 and the Eminent Engineering Personality award from the Institution of Engineers (India) for the year 2001. He has also won several best paper awards and gold medals for his work.

Prior to his assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor of VIT University, Mr. Kothari was the Professor of the Centre for Energy Studies, IIT-Delhi, where he also served as Director (in-charge) in 2005, as Deputy Director (Administration) in 2003-06 and as Head, Centre for Energy Studies in 1995-97. He served as Principal, Visvesvarayya Regional Engineering College, Nagpur, in 1997-98. He was Visiting Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia, in 1982-83 and 1989. He was the NSF Fellow at Purdue University, the U.S., in 1992.

Mr. Kothari has published 611 research papers in various national and international journals and conferences, guided 27 Ph.Ds and 55 M.Tech. students, and authored 20 books in Power Systems and other allied areas.
