Schools told to adopt fire-safety measures

New Delhi: The Delhi Government has directed all educational institutes to install fire extinguishers and make their buildings fire-proof within six months in view of recent Supreme Court order seeking safety measures in schools.

The State Education Department has also instructed the officials to issue grant of recognition or shifting only to those schools who comply with the fire safety measures as approved by the authorities concerned.
Severe action

"We have asked them to ensure that the buildings are constructed as per National Building Code and any official found guilty of dereliction in duty will face severe action. We cannot compromise the safety of the students," a senior official from education department said.

Schools also need to ensure that inflammable and fire-prone items are not kept in the buildings, the official said, adding that authorities have been asked to prepare teachers as well as students for emergencies.

The order covers all private and public schools, he added. The MCD alone has 9.5 lakh students studying in its 1,671 primary schools in the city. -- PTI
