Teach Achutha Menon biography in schools

Thrissur: Social critic Sukumar Azhikode has said the biography of CPI leader and former Chief Minister C. Achutha Menon should be taught in schools. He was addressing a meeting in remembrance of Achutha Menon here on Sunday. "He was a model Chief Minister. He was not merely a head of Ministers, but the Chief Minister of the State, of the people. He fiercely protected himself against corruption. He was careful about his words and steered clear of conflicts," Prof. Azhikode said.

He observed that Achutha Menon knew that by merely promoting universities he could not bring about all-round development of the education sector. "The research institutions he started in Thiruvananthapuram bear testimony to his vision."

Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran described Achutha Menon as a sage-like administrator whose thoughts and deeds transcended party politics.

"He was guided by the light of ideology that shone inside him. The light guided him in effectively solving administrative and political issues." The Minister said that even political leaders who took the initiative to sign a Free Trade Agreement with the Association South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) would agree that it would harm farmers in India.

CPI district secretary C. N. Jeyadevan presided. Addressing an Achutha Menon remembrance meeting organised by the Centre for Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford), Forest Minister Benoy Viswom said that experience had shown that the split in the Communist Party did not yield any positive result.
