Students learn to make 'CANSAT'

Hyderabad: How would it be if you made a satellite and sent it away from the surface of the earth? Well, you can't straight away send a rocket into space, but surely can try launching the CANSAT off your terrace.

CANSAT, short for Canned Satellite, is used for atmospheric research- to record temperature changes and weather patterns in the sky. It can go up to 12 km off the earth's surface and is made by students from many parts of the world, including India.

Over 60 students from engineering colleges in the twin cities were enlightened about CANSAT at a robotics seminar conducted by Workshop India, consisting of a group of robotics enthusiasts on Sunday.

"Making a CANSAT is quiet easy," says Aditya Singh Baghel, CEO of Workshop India and a final year student from Vellore Institute of Technology.

The audience, which comprised students from different engineering streams, were shown how a CANSAT was made during the seminar. "A Coke can is fitted with a receiver, transmitter, GPS, humidity sensor and an on-board computer," says Mr. Baghel.

"Anyone who has the basics of programming and electronics can build one," he said.

Claimed to be the first 'CANSAT' workshop in the twin cities, the seminar laid out a clear picture of the robotics scene in the country. "Most part of our education is theoretical and with robotics, we implement what we have learnt. Robotics is interdisciplinary work with Programming and Electronics being core subjects that are used to create robots," he adds.

Participants also got an overview of robotic kits used in making robots. Workshop members from India have designed and made over 120 robots besides, kits for other enthusiasts.
