Students block road seeking scholarship

Tirupur: Traffic along the busy Tirupur-Palladam road was disrupted for almost two hours on Monday after about 300 students of a self-financed college, situated near Chinnakarai, resorted to road roko to press their demand.

They demanded that the administration take steps to disburse scholarship to students belonging to backward class and most backward class communities to purse undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

As tension mounted, District Backward Classes and Minority Welfare Officer N.K. Nellaiventan, Revenue Divisional Officer Syed Humayun and senior police officials rushed to the spot and pacified the students.

The officials explained to them that those studying in self-financing institutions were not entitled to government scholarships.

They advised the students not to resort to road blockades in the future since it cause hardship to thousands of general public.
