Engineering students make strides in sound technology

Thiruvananthapuram: Music buffs would know the bliss of listening to their favourite tracks on a system equipped with tweeter, woofer and mid-range speakers. An integrated system that offers the same sound quality would be a dream machine.

A team of students from the University College of Engineering, Karyavattom have developed a directive sound generator that overcomes the technological hurdle. The equipment generates sound waves of a particular range travelling through a predetermined path.

O.S. Abhilash, M. Jidumohan, Pramod R .Sankar and E.N. Saneer, all seventh semester students of Electronics and Communication Engineering, developed the gadget as part of their course project. The students claim that the system can do away with the need for separate tweeter, woofer and mid range speakers. The integrated speaker is small and light.

The equipment modulates sound into ultrasonic waves. The modulated signals reach the atmosphere through an ultrasonic transducer where they are demodulated and transmitted as radio signals. Since ultrasonic waves travel in a straight line, the demodulated signals are also unidirectional.

The major challenge before the students was the lack of locally- available transducers. Initially conceived as a digital signal processing system, the project had to be completed with limited resources. However, the student team is hopeful of developing a digital directive sound generator soon.

The team has already received enquiries from two reputed companies for their product.

The students were guided by Head of the Department Sreedevi and faculty member Jeenu Paul.
