2 engineering students drown in canal

GUNTUR: Two engineering students from Nambur on the outskirts of Guntur were drowned in the Krishna Western Delta irrigation canal on Friday.

The two students, residents of Guntur city, were identified as Mokkapati Bhagadutt and Dattineni Pruthvish studying in third year Computer Science Engineering.

The two were to board the college bus at 5.10 p.m. after the college hours, but instead of boarding the bus they walked down the road to Nambur village from their college and went into the canal waters close to the road.

People in the vicinity heard the cries of the students for help and by the time they reached, the eyewitnesses said they had got stuck in the mud and would have died of shock after drowning. They were taken to the NRI Hospital in Chinakakani, but the doctors declared them brought dead.

Pedakakani Police registered a case and are investigating. By the time the security guard of the college could inform the management of two students walking away from the college without boarding the bus, they got frantic calls from the locals informing about the drowning incident.
