Schools told to monitor students' activities

The Directorate of Public Instruction has decided to appoint security staff in government schools across the State to monitor the activities of students within the campus.

The decision comes in the wake of the arrest of three men on Wednesday on the charge of raping two minor girls, students of a government school here who belong to the Scheduled Castes.

The accused had lured the girls into truanting and accompanying them to beach resorts and other tourist spots in the city. The directorate will soon issue a circular to all educational institutions on strengthening security.

The security staff deployed in association with the parent-teacher associations will cover high school and higher secondary schools in the first phase, said A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Director of Public Instruction.

Mr. Hanish said that as an additional measure, the directorate was contemplating building compound walls for all schools.

From now on, students who regularly skipped classes would have a tough time convincing teachers about the reason for their absence. The practice of allowing the students back in class after accepting their leave letters was under review.
