Published media reports seem to indicate that the booming business process outsourcing industry in the Philippines is facing a crisis and it has nothing to do with the global financial crisis.

The major problem facing this high-growth industry is the shortage of skilled workers with a vast majority of companies in the domain believing that finding the right candidate for their business is their biggest concern.

A report on GMA Television quoted a recent survey to state that close to 63 per cent of all BPO companies polls held the view that supply of qualified workforce was the biggest challenge that they saw on the horizon for the year 2009.

Of course, there was a good chunk of respondents who believed that the global crisis would impact their growth potential in the short-to-medium term with approximately 43 percent believing that rising competition was their biggest challenge.

Responding to the results of the survey, the apex industry body BPAP has made it clear that henceforth the stress would be on developing human resources to meet the higher demand for non-voice BPO business. Government-funded training and partnerships between BPOs and educational institutions is already being undertaken to ensure that the industry does not face a resource crunch.
