BU to control 50 per cent PG admissions in autonomous college

BANGALORE: Bangalore University will fill 50 per cent of the seats in postgraduate courses offered by autonomous colleges coming under its purview.

University Registrar Sanjay Vir Singh told The Hindu that autonomous colleges had refused to admit students sent by the university to its postgraduate courses. "A decision was taken to fill 50 per cent of the postgraduate seats in autonomous colleges by the university," he said.

Similarly, the Syndicate decided to collect affiliation fee from autonomous colleges in addition to the fee fixed for their autonomous status. "The Syndicate's decision will become a law once the Governor's assent is received", he said.

The draft amendments to the existing statute governing autonomous colleges of Bangalore University were also approved during the meeting.

Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev said some of the autonomous colleges, particularly the private and unaided institutions, were violating the roster system by failing to ensure social justice in admission process.

"The weaker sections and socially backward students are not able to secure admissions. We want to have a say in the admissions to post graduate courses offered by these institutions," he said.

The Syndicate also withheld a decision taken by the Academic Council to increase the revaluation fee from Rs. 350 to Rs 1,050. The Syndicate decided to withdraw the recent notification issued in the regard to ensure that poor students are also able to avail themselves of the revaluation option. The decision will be reviewed by the Syndicate after the current semester.
