Ban on new medical stores flayed

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Private Pharmacists Association (KPPA) has said that the pharmacy sector needed strong regulation, and not total ban on opening new medical stores.

KPPA spokesperson Jayan Koroth said in a statement here that drug licences must be issued only to pharmacists.

Sale of medicines through medical stores must be appropriately controlled, he said.

Licence of medical stores which indulge in unhealthy competition and sell medicines illegally must be suspended.

Medical stores must employ full-time pharmacists, who should compulsorily wear white uniforms so that the public can clear their doubts with them. Services of more than one pharmacist should be made compulsory at medical shops.

The spokesperson contended that the ban on opening new medical stores would lead to indiscriminate growth of illegal drug sale (with licence and without pharmacists) in private hospitals and clinics.
