'Education can improve H-K region development'

GULBARGA: Vice-Chancellor of the Karnataka State Women's University Geeta Bali here on Sunday said that an inclusive and comprehensive approach should be adopted for the growth of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, and that education and empowerment should be the focal points of development.

Inaugurating a seminar on "Implementation of Article 371-D (Telangana Model) in the Hyderabad-Karnataka Region" organised by the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Bali said there was no denying the fact that the Hyderabad Karnataka region was backward in all aspects.

However, effective education would result in economic development, thereby leading to the development of other sectors also, Dr Bali said. "The government, apart from amending Article 371 of the Constitution to provide special reservation in education and employment, should also prioritise the mobilisation of financial resources for infrastructure and economic development of backward regions," she said. Registrar of Gulbarga University Pratap Singh Tiwari said that the people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region enjoyed everything, including Independence, belatedly. "When all other regions in the country got Independence on August 15, 1947, the Hyderabad-Karnataka region waited for an additional 13 months to breathe the fresh air of freedom in September 1948," he said.

For other demands such as the one for Central University, people had to take to the streets, he said.

Now, for the amendment of Article 371 of the Constitution, the people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region were being forced to take recourse to agitation, Dr. Tiwari said.

President of the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Umakant Nigudgi said that the agitation demanding the amendment of the Article 371 on the Telangana model would be intensified in future, and the next targets would be Union Government establishments, offices and the Railways.
