Most nutritious form of milk

TIRUCHI: Breast milk is the most nutritious form of milk for babies and there is a need to create awareness on breast feeding among common people, said Collector T. Soundiah, here on Saturday.



The Collector who flagged off a rally at the Government Hospital campus in Srirangam here to mark the World Breast Feeding Week celebration, said that feeding of breast milk was a necessity even during the time of natural disasters and other calamities to save the infants.

Mayor S. Sujatha, district panchayat president V. Sangeetha, Joint Director of Health Services Dr. M. Poongothai, Srirangam Government Hospital chief Dr. Mohanasundaram part in the rally.

Presiding over the World Breast Feeding Week celebration organised by the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College and Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. N. Balasubramanian, Dean of the K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital, said that breast feeding should be encouraged as it could alone prevent all diseases to the infants as it contained antibodies. He advised the mothers to avoid formula milk. He pointed out that the infants fed with would have more love and affection and psychological attachment towards their mothers.

Dr. Sunil Srinivasan and Dr. S. Panneerselvam, president and secretary respectively of Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Tiruchi, Dr. R. Kumar, Dr. Muthukumar of the hospital, S. Sujatha, Mayor stressed the importance of breast feeding. They pointed out that breast feeding promoted health and helped to prevent disease and reduces health care costs.

Several speakers mentioned that feeding infants with other types of milk had resulted in more deaths from diarrhoea in both developing and developed countries. The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics have recommended exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant's life.
