Headmasters will be told to encourage reading of books


THANJAVUR: Commissioner for Rural Development Gagandeep Singh Bedi inspected the works going on under Aanithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi scheme and National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Thanjavur district on Thursday.

Accompanied by Collector M.S.Shanmugham, Mr.Bedi visited the library building constructed at Therkunatham village in Azhivaikkal panchayat in Orathanadu panchayat union. He asked the library officials to serialise the books given to school children as per titles.

He also saw the library building at Paruthiappar Koil village in Keelathur panchayat.

He asked officials to instruct school headmasters to encourage school children to read library books. He said that India and Tamil Nadu maps should be displayed in the library.

Later, he inspected the desilting works taken up under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme at Ponnapur West Village. Hundred persons take part in the works taken up at a cost of Rs. 3.11 lakh.
Two suspended

The Commissioner, who discovered irregularities in the maintenance of attendance register and cash distribution, ordered the suspension of panchayat assistant Lakshmanan and makkal nala paniyalar Gunasekaran.

Mr.Bedi also inspected the black topping of road around Kannathankudi Keelaiyur under National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development scheme. He saw the Periyar Samathuvapuram works at Thoppuviduthi village in Thiruvonam panchayat union.

P.Mantrachalam, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, accompanied him.
