Mathematics meet held
TIRUCHI: Budding researchers gained knowledge from stalwarts in prime areas of Mathematics at a recent international conference organised by the PG and Research Department of Mathematics, Jamal Mohamed College.
The two-day UGC-sponsored conference was organised with the objective of sharing the recent findings and developments in several areas including algebra, analysis, combinatorics, differential equations, computer algorithms, network analysis, operations research, graph theory, mathematical modelling and simulation, stochastic processes, decision making, fuzzy decision making, fuzzy graph and fuzzy networks.
Research scholars acquired practical knowledge to carry out application oriented research, according to A.R. Mohamed Ismail, Head, Department of Mathematics, Jamal Mohamed College, and A. Nagoorgani, Organising Secretary.
Applications
Inaugurating the conference, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko identified new areas where mathematics could be applied. Teaching mathematics could be challenging, he observed adding that the subject must be taught on par with real life applications.
Ring Theory
Angelina Chin, Professor, Institute of Mathematical Science, University of Malaya, Kualalumpur, Malaysia, delivered a lecture on 'An overview of the development of Ring Theory with emphasis on Clean Rings'.
Sriraman Sridharan of the University of Perpignan via Domitia, France, delivered a lecture on 'Polynomial Time Algorithms for classes of sub graph problems; and Haniffa Mohamed Nasir of University of Peradaniya, Sri Lanka, on 'Relational Properties of orthogonal spherical harmonics in Cubed Sphere.
Delegates from several colleges and universities in the country also presented papers on emerging topics.
A total of 324 delegates from 78 colleges and universities from all over the world participated in the conference and 131 papers were presented.
Principal M. Sheik Mohamed presided over the inaugural and valedictory sessions.
