TIRUCHI: Why should a newspaper be called a 'living textbook'?

Understandably, students of standard VIII of Kamakoti Vidyalaya were curious to know how a newspaper could be termed a 'living' thing during a recent session of The Hindu - Newspaper in Education.

"Is it not true that newspaper 'breathes in' and 'breathes out' news?" This reasoning made out by the resource person Nandita Ravinder struck an instant chord with the student audience of about 60.

The session on 'know your newspaper' was an occasion for them to understand the valuable role newspapers play in moulding their lives. "The purpose of NIE is to transform the student community into informed citizens in a democratic society," Ms. Nandita explained.

It was not that the students did not know the utility of The Hindu.

More than half of the students in the class were regular readers; their priorities were obviously the Young World and other supplements. The regular readers were of the habit of scrolling through headlines in the mornings and getting into the details once they returned home from school.

The session fortified their interest in daily reading. By the time the session got to an end, the realisation that newspapers open up the world of opportunities had set in among the students, said Ms. Nandita.

And regular newspaper reading is a value addition for teachers as well.

Be it any subject, integration of the Removed contents in classroom deliberations adds zest to the teaching-learning process, Ms. Nandita said, adding that teachers have more scope for exploring how best newspapers could be used in classrooms.
