"Make NCC compulsory"

TIRUCHI: To impart values among students as part of nation-building process, National Cadet Corps (NCC) should be made compulsory for all college students, observed Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko.

Speaking at a function organised by Major Saravanan Memorial Trust here on Sunday to mark 'Vijay Diwas,' the 10th anniversary of Operation Vijay, Dr. Ponnavaikko said that NCC formed a basic training ground for moulding the youths' character and inculcate values to them. He would take all efforts to promote NCC for all the students of Bharathidasan University and colleges affiliated to it. Foreign countries such as Singapore had made defence training mandatory for employment.

The Group Commander, NCC Group, Tiruchi, Col. B. N. Chetan, said that NCC training should be made compulsory for students for at least two years. Tiruchi had produced three young martyrs -- the late Major Saravanan; the late Capt T. Sahay Selvaraj and the late Lt. N. Parthiban.

The latter two had laid their lives during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and were posthumously honoured with 'Sena Medal' and 'Kirti Chakra' respectively.

Releasing a compact disc titled 'Major Saravanan - a saga', Principal of St. Joseph's College Rev. R. Rajarathinam, said that spiritual component such as yoga should become part of the curriculum. Students should also be involved in community and social services such as traffic regulation and rural development works.

Amirthavalli Mariappan, mother of the late Major Saravanan, received the first CD. The Vice-Chancellor honoured three best NCC cadets, Sudarshan, Rajarajan and P. Jagannathan.

Earlier, a wreath was placed at the Major Saravanan Memorial in the city in the presence of officials of the Army and NCC cadets and NSS volunteers.

Later, Dr. Ponnavaikko told presspersons that he would write to the University Grants Commission and the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, expressing the University's preparedness for making NCC compulsory for all its students. The Bharathidasan University had allotted a piece of land on its campus for imparting training to the NCC cadets.
