PG diploma programme in film-making launched

CHENNAI: The Department of Filmmaking, School of Media Studies, Loyola College, on Thursday launched a one-year PG diploma programme in film-making.

Speaking on the occasion, noted editor and director B. Lenin, honorary course director, said the programme was aimed at preparing young aspirants in a host of skills required for informed filmmaking.

The course, spanning three trimesters, would look at areas such as creative thinking, image making, screenplay writing, planning and budgeting, production management, practical direction, editing for meaning, contextualising special effects, sound sense, film economics and film ethics.
Providing skills

"It has been our dream to offer such a course that would give students all the technical and professional skills required to make a mark in the industry," he said.

He said that he, along with the dean of the School of Media Studies S. Rajanayagam, nurtured this dream and were very happy when veterans agreed to be part of the course.

The faculty would include eminent technicians such as editors R. Vittal, A. Paul Durai Singam, Antony and Suresh Urs and directors Keyar, Guhanathan and Gangai Amaran.

Technicians, who addressed media persons in this connection on Thursday, spoke of the films of yesteryears, when veteran film makers planned in advance and executed them skilfully to keep the budget under watch.
Modern films

Contemporary films largely lacked planning and ended up increasing the production costs due to the poor planning, they observed.

The course was structured to prepare filmmakers in all these respects and ensure they are moulded into responsible technicians, they said.
Various shifts

The course will be made flexible and offered in different shifts. At the end of the year, toppers would be honoured with the Director Bhim Singh awards for best screenplay, direction and editing.

Students who have completed Plus Two or who are pursuing a degree are eligible to apply.

An aptitude test and interview will be conducted on July 27, and the course will begin on August 3. For details, call 28178392 or 99403 65485.
