School gearing up for golden jubilee fete

BHUBANESWAR: Old students of Secondary Board School of Cuttack, the only school that is kept under direct supervision of the Board of Secondary Education, Orissa, on Sunday announced school's year-long golden jubilee celebration schedule beginning from August 3.

Established on August 3, 1959, the Secondary Board School (SBS) will complete 50 years of its existence next month.

Addressing a press conference here, president SBS Old Students' Association president Tirthananda Mohapatra said a procession would be taken out in Cuttack and a memorial installed on premise of the school to mark the occasion on August 3.

"The year-long celebration will come to end on August 2, 2010. During this period, a series of programmes, including blood camps, free health check-up and road safety awareness programme," said Mr. Mohapatra, who was incidentally the first student to take admission in the school.

Association secretary Gorachand Das said the alumni of the school had gone on to establish themselves in different field in the country.

The names included Amit Kiran Deb, present Chief Secretary of West Bengal and Rabi Narayan Bastia, vice-president of Reliance Petrochemicals who got Padmashree for his achievement in professional career.

"We want to create a fund for talented students belonging to economically weaker sections so that they could pursue their higher studies." Mr. Das said. During past 50 years, about 40,000 students have passed from the school, which was created to become role model for other government schools in the State.
