Teachers oppose DCE conversion to technological university

NEW DELHI: The Delhi College of Engineering Teachers' Association has expressed its opposition to the Delhi Government's recent move to upgrade DCE to Delhi Technological University (DTU).

The Delhi Technological University Bill, 2009, was passed by the Assembly this past week after Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said it would pave the way for upgradation of the existing DCE to a university.

"The Delhi Government's decision was discussed at the general body meeting of the Association. The general body was of the opinion that conversion to a technical university is against the spirit of composite and multidisciplinary university as recommended by the Prof. Yashpal Committee," said the Association's officiating president M. P. S. Mahandroo.

'Merge with DU'
The general body felt that merger of DCE into Delhi University should be requested. "DCE has been affiliated to Delhi University, which is a Central university. The students receive degrees awarded by Delhi University, which is a well recognised institution across the world. In fact, DCE largely owes its prestige to its affiliation with Delhi University. What value would a degree from a State university have? Why can't they link DCE to Delhi University?" asked Dr. Mahandroo.

To oppose this conversion, the DCETA has decided to hold a demonstration outside Metcalfe House this Thursday. "At present DCE is entirely public funded and is affordable for common citizens. A heavy financial burden on students can be expected if the proposed university functions as a self-financed institution," said Dr. Mahandroo.
