Pharmaceutical unit for Madurai

MADURAI: A team of experts from the Department of Pharmaceuticals, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, inspected two sites around Madurai for the establishment of one of the prestigious institutes in India, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER).

Under the directions of Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers M.K. Azhagiri to establish industries and bring in development works to the southern districts, the team inspected sites at Edaiyapatti and Ambalapatti on Friday.

The team included P. Rama Rao, Director, NIPER; C. L. Kaul, former Director; and R. C. Jha, Director, Department of Pharmaceuticals.

Rs. 200 crore project
Addressing the media, Mr. Jha said that the estimated cost of setting up of NIPER was Rs. 200 crore and 100 acres land from the concerned State Government was also required. "We inspected the two sites — Edaiyapatti has 266 acres of land and Ambalapatti has 300 acres."

Apart from Mohali (Chandigarh) where the institute is established, NIPER is also functioning in Hyderabad, Hajipur, Kolkata, Rae Bareli and Guwahati. Madurai is expected to be the sixth place in the country.

Mr. Kaul said that if things were conducive, NIPER in Madurai would start functioning from the next academic year itself.

When asked about the decisive factors, he said that they were looking for good infrastructure, water, uninterrupted power supply and better connectivity to the city.

The officials would be sending a project assessment report based on this visit to the Planning Commission and the Cabinet for approval.
Three courses first

Three courses — Pharma Informatics, Pharmaceutics Biotechnology and Pharmacology, and Toxicology and Biotechnology — would be started initially and more courses would be introduced later. The three courses would initially be started either at Madurai Medical College or Madurai Kamaraj University.
Another major facility

Officials belonging to Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), which comes under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, also inspected the sites along with them.

CIPET is likely to start an 'Advanced Tooling and Plastic Product Development Centre' here.

The estimated cost of setting up the centre will be Rs. 120 crore and the approximate area required is 30 acres.

A. K. Viswanathan, Officer on Special Duty, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers; N. Mathivanan, Collector; S. Sugumar, Chief Manager, CIPET; and S. Ilangovan, Chief Manager (Research and Development), CIPET, were present during the visit.
