Vocational training for transgender persons

CHENNAI: A vocational training programme on mobile phone assembly for transgender persons will commence in a few weeks, Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board chairperson Salma said here on Friday.

It would be conducted in association with a private firm. So far, 10 transgender persons had enlisted. Women could be included to get the required numbers to begin the training.

She was speaking at the valedictory function of a training programme in computer skills organised by the Board, in association with the Sahodari Project of the Young Women's Christian Association and Satyam Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Mahindra Satyam.

Placements
The second batch of the training programme, held between March, 2009, and June 2009, had 17 participants, selected from economically backward sections, said Ms. Salma. Most of the participants were placed in different firms in jobs ranging from data entry, billing and teaching.

C. Chandrakumari, who underwent the training, said that most of the participants planned to study further and their salaries would help them finance their education.

An awareness seminar on sex-change operation for transgendered persons will be held soon, said Ms. Salma. Despite Government General Hospital offering free sex-change operations, many continued to go to unlicensed private institutions and suffered.

The seminar would have participants who had undergone sex-change operation the Government General Hospital, as well as those who went to private hospitals, she said, adding that members of the medical fraternity would also provide information on the sex-change procedure.
