FAQ : ON LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

HERE YOU CAN GET THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM THE LATEST TECHNOLOGIES

FAQ : Visual Studio 2010

1. How do I download the CTP?

The CTP can be downloaded from the Download Center. The Virtual PC image size is approximately 7.5GB compressed. We recommend using a download management utility to optimize your download experience. Please review this blog post for more information.

2. How do I get started once I download the CTP?

The CTP is available as a Virtual PC (VPC) image that you download and run on a host computer using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (SP1).

Follow the following Steps to get set up and started:

  • Install Virtual PC SP1 on your computer
Click Start, point to All Programs, and click Microsoft Virtual PC.
On the Virtual PC Console, click New.
Once the New Virtual Machine Wizard opens, Click Next.
On the Options page, select Add an existing virtual machine, and then click Next.
On the Existing Virtual Machine Name and Location page, click Browse, and navigate to the location you downloaded the Virtual PC image.
Click the VisualStudio2010CTP.vmc file, click Open, and then click Next.
On the Completing the New Virtual Machine Wizard page, click Finish.
[The CTP Virtual PC will appear on the Virtual PC Console] On the Virtual PC Console, select VisualStudio2010CTP, and then click Start.
[After a few moments, the Virtual PC will start and you will see the CTP login screen.] On the VisualStudio2010CTP - Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 window Action menu, click CTRL+ALT+DEL to start the login process.
On the CTP machine, click the username TFSSetup.
In the Password box, type 1Setuptfs
Once the Desktop appears, Click Start and then click Visual Studio 2010.
The Start Page for Visual Studio 2010 will appear. To access the feature walkthroughs and begin your tour of the CTP, click the Walkthrough link on the Start Page or click the Visual Studio 2010 CTP Walkthrough link on the Virtual PC desktop.

3. What are the minimum system requirements for running the CTP?

We recommend the following minimum system configuration:

* Minimum 40 GB available HDD space. (75 GB recommended for better performance)
* The host computer must have a minimum of 2 GB RAM, with 1 GB allocated to the host operating system and 1 GB allocated to the Virtual PC.
* We recommend that the host computer CPU be at least a Core Duo 2 GHz processor.
* Service Pack 1 of Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is required to access the Virtual PC.

What products does the Virtual PC contain?

This Virtual PC consists of the following major components:

* Visual Studio Team Suite 2010
* .NET Framework 4.0
* Team Foundation Server 2010
* Guest OS: Windows 2008 Server
* SQL: SQL Server 2008

What is the network connection setting on the Virtual PC?

The virtual machine used for the CTP has no network connection, and you should not connect from the Virtual PC to the Internet or an outside network. In addition to not having the proper security safeguards, enabling networking from within Virtual PC will likely create duplicate machine names on your network. Do not change the computer instance name (VS2010CTP), as doing so will cause failures in SQL, WSS and TFS.

How can I improve the performance of the Virtual PC?

For optimum Virtual PC performance we recommend you run this on a different physical drive than the host operating system. Even an external hard drive will make a significant improvement in performance.

If the host computer has more than 2 GB RAM, you can increase performance of your Virtual PC by allocating more memory to the Virtual PC. After that change to the Virtual PC settings, you will need to update the page file inside the guest OS to be 1.5 times the amount of RAM you've allocated.

Also while using the Virtual PC, you should periodically close and reopen Visual Studio 2010.

What is Windows 7?

Windows 7 is the next version of the Windows client operating system. This version incorporates hundreds of improvements based on your feedback. It works the way you want: it's responsive, reliable, and runs smoothly. It starts and shuts down faster, and is designed to make your battery last longer.

What is Windows 7 Release Candidate?

Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) is a pre-release version of Windows 7, our next client operating system. When you use the RC, your PC sends information to our engineers to help them check the fixes and changes they made based on Beta tests. It takes hundreds of Microsoft engineers around the world to create each new release of Windows

Who can download the RC?

The RC is free and will be available at least through July 2009. However, because Microsoft isn't providing technical support for the the RC, we strongly recommend that only experienced computer users sign up. How experienced? At minimum, you should be comfortable backing up a computer, formatting a hard drive, burning an ISO file to DVD, and installing an operating system from scratch. You should also be comfortable troubleshooting problems on your own.

Are there risks to installing the RC?

Yes. While the RC is stable and has been thoroughly tested, it's not the finished product. Your computer could crash and you could lose important files. So please back up your data and please don't test the RC on your primary home or business PC.

Other problems you might encounter include:
* Software that doesn't install or work correctly, including anti-virus or security programs
* Printers, video cards, or other hardware that doesn't work
* Problems accessing corporate or home networks
* Files may become corrupted
Bottom line: Please carefully balance the risks and rewards for you of trying out the RC before you install. To see the kinds of risks we're talking about, review the known issues in the Release Notes before you install the Windows 7 RC.

Can I upgrade directly from the Windows 7 Beta to the RC?

If you are running the Windows 7 Beta, you'll need to back up your data (preferably on an external device) and then do a clean installation of the Windows 7 Release Candidate. After installing Windows 7, you will need to reinstall applications and restore your files. If you need help with the installation process

Can I upgrade directly from Windows Vista to the RC?

Yes. If you're running Windows Vista, you can install Window 7 RC without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data. But to be on the safe side, please do back up your data before you start.

How do I uninstall Windows 7 RC?
Here are complete instructions on how to uninstall the Pre-release version of Windows 7 and revert to a previous genuine operating system.

How does testing the RC help improve the operating system?

You help just by using it. That's because the Windows 7 RC automatically reports crashes and bugs to Microsoft over the Internet. The information sent in automatic reporting is called "telemetry." Our engineers updated Windows 7 based on Beta test results. During the Release Candidate phase, they use the telemetry data to verify that the fixes and changes they made are working correctly.

Will you collect any other information from testers?
When you run Windows 7 RC we'll collect information in case we need to contact you about Windows 7 RC. We will also collect automated reporting feedback from PCs running the OS to help collectively analyze issues and file bug reports where appropriate. For a complete explanation of what we'll collect and how we'll use it, please read the Windows 7 RC privacy statement.

Virtual Server 2005

What is virtual machine technology?

Virtual machine technology applies to both server and client hardware. Virtual machine technology enables multiple operating systems to run concurrently on a single machine. In particular, Microsoft Virtual PC products enable one or more operating systems to run on the same computer system as the current Windows operating system.

What is virtual machine technology used for?

Virtual machine technology serves a variety of purposes. It enables hardware consolidation, because multiple operating systems can run on one computer. Key applications for virtual machine technology include cross-platform integration as well as the following:
•   Server consolidation. If several servers run applications that consume only a fraction of the available resources, virtual machine technology can be used to enable them to run side by side on a single server, even if they require different versions of the operating system or middleware.
•   Consolidation for development and testing environments. Each virtual machine acts as a separate environment, which reduces risk and enables developers to quickly recreate different operating system configurations or compare versions of applications designed for different operating systems. In addition, a developer can test early development versions of an application in a virtual machine without fear of destabilizing the system for other users.
•   Legacy application re-hosting. Legacy operating systems and applications can run on new hardware along with more recent operating systems and applications.
•   Software demonstrations. With virtual machine technology, users can quickly recreate a clean operating system environment or system configuration.
•   Simplify disaster and recovery. Virtual machine technology can be used as part of a disaster and recovery plan that requires application portability and flexibility across hardware platforms.

What is Windows Server Virtualization?
Windows Server virtualization, previously codenamed Viridian, is a hypervisor-based technology that is a part of Windows Server "Longhorn". It provides a scalable, secure and highly available virtualization platform. It is part of Microsoft's ongoing effort to provide our customers and partners with the best operating system platform for virtualization.

What is Windows hypervisor?

A core component of Windows Server virtualization, Windows hypervisor is a thin layer of software between the hardware and the OS that allows multiple operating systems to run, unmodified, on a host computer at the same time. It provides simple partitioning functionality and is responsible for maintaining strong isolation between partitions. It has an inherently secure architecture with minimal attack surface, as it does not contain any third party device drivers.

What benefits does Windows Server virtualization offer customers?

Windows Server virtualization provides customers an ideal platform for key virtualization scenarios, such as production server consolidation, business continuity management, software test and development, and development of a dynamic data center.

Windows Server virtualization provides key functionality which an ideal virtualization platform should provide - scalability, high performance, reliability, security, flexibility and manageability. It provides scalability and high performance by supporting features like guest multi-processing support and 64-bit guest and host support; reliability and security through its hypervisor architecture; flexibility and manageability by supporting features like live migration of virtual machines from one physical host to another, dynamic addition of virtual resources and integration with System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

What is Virtual Server 2005 R2?

Virtual Server 2005 R2 is the next version of Virtual Server 2005, which was released October 1, 2004. Virtual Server 2005 R2 is the current shipping product and is now available as a free download. Virtual Server R2 provides customer improved performance, availability, and scalability in order to increase operational efficiency in server consolidation, application re-hosting, disaster recovery, and software test and development.

What are the differences between Virtual PC and Virtual Server?

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 is a virtual machine solution for desktop operating systems. Microsoft Virtual Server 2005, on the other hand, is a solution for server operating systems. Although Virtual PC and Virtual Server share many features in common, they are designed for different purposes. As a result, some of their features are also quite different. Microsoft has created a white paper that explains the differences between Virtual PC and Virtual Server, and discusses the scenarios in which it is appropriate to use one or the other.

Will localized versions of Virtual Server 2005 R2 be made available?

Virtual Server 2005 R2 will be available in English, Japanese, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, French, German, Italian, Korean, and Spanish.

How can I get Virtual Server 2005 R2?

Virtual Server 2005 R2 is now available as a free download. You can also pre-order the Virtual Server 2005 CD

What are the host requirements for Virtual Server?

See the System Requirements page or search for "system requirements" in the Virtual Server Administrator's Guide.

How many virtual machines can run per processor?

The number of virtual machines running per host depends on several things, including physical memory, processor, and workload running in the guest. With Virtual Server 2005 R2, you define the amount of memory available to a virtual machine, and that memory allocation can be altered to reflect the needs of the virtual machine.

5 key questions about cloud storage

1. What is cloud storage, and how does it work?

Ask a dozen people and you'll get a dozen different definitions. In a nutshell, cloud storage is a utility-type service that provides multiple users or "tenants" access to a shared pool of storage capacity, which is accessed over an Internet connection. Storage clouds are scalable, and they can easily expand or contract according to customer needs.

2. What's the difference between a public cloud and a private cloud?

The public cloud is a pay-per-use storage utility. All components sit outside of the customer's firewall in a shared infrastructure that is logically partitioned, multitenant and accessed over a secure Internet connection.

Public cloud storage providers, such as Amazon.com Inc. with its Simple Storage Service, typically charge a monthly usage fee per gigabyte of storage plus an additional bandwidth fee for transferring data to and from the cloud. Public cloud customers require no physical storage hardware or any special in-house technical expertise.

As with public clouds, storage capacity can quickly and easily be increased by adding servers to the pool. ParaScale Inc.'s Cloud Storage product and Caringo Inc.'s CAStor are two examples of applications that can be used to set up private cloud storage systems.

3. Is cloud storage for all types of data?

No. Cloud storage best handles large volumes of unstructured data and archival material, such as credit card and mortgage applications or medical records. For now, public clouds can't reliably handle highly transactional files or databases that require consistently fast network connections. Any kind of online transaction processing is a no-go.

Cloud storage also isn't an appropriate choice for Tier 1, Tier 2 or block-based data storage, says Jim Ziernick, president and CEO of San Diego-based Nirvanix Inc. "If someone is trying to replace a SAN in supporting a transaction-processing system like CRM, we're not appropriate. Even if we did do block-level storage, the latency of the Internet would cause a noticeable delay," he says.

"What we can do with cloud storage is give users nearly the access that they have with [network-attached storage]," he adds.

Data backup, archiving and disaster recovery are three likely uses for the cloud

"If you go to cloud storage, does it solve the problem of understanding where and why storage growth is out of control and where the point of value is [in storing a particular set of data] in the entire end-to-end business process? Just moving the technology to a cloud is not an optimal solution,"

4. Who is using cloud storage today, and how are they using it?

Start-ups and new Web 2.0-based service providers, such as San Francisco-based Cloudize Inc., are among the biggest users of cloud storage, at least for the time being. Cloudize bills itself as the first SaaS-based file collaboration tool focused on small to midsize enterprises. CEO Edwin Fu says the tool was designed to centralize all of a company's files in a cheap, scalable and collaborative way.

One of Cloudize's Web 2.0-based applications lets users of Salesforce.com -- the granddaddy of software as a service -- store and share data, such as big sales presentations and video, in the public cloud. San Diego-based Nirvanix provides the public storage cloud behind Cloudize.

5. Does cloud storage eliminate the need for in-house technical resources?

Public clouds remove the need for server and storage administrators, but not all technical resource requirements go away, according to ParaScale's Maxey. Many public cloud storage services use newer protocols, such as WebDav or REST, for access, he notes. If a customer's in-house applications don't support those protocols, the technical staff will need to make changes to code. Otherwise, Maxey says, "it's like being dropped in a foreign country and not knowing the language."

What does open source mean?

Most software that you buy or download only comes in the compiled ready-to-run version. Compiled means that the actual program code that the developer created, known as the source code, has run through a special program called a compiler that translates the source code into a form that the computer can understand.

Open source software is at the opposite end of the spectrum. The source code is included with the compiled version and modification or customization is actually encouraged. The software developers who support the open source concept believe that by allowing anyone who's interested to modify the source code, the application will be more useful and error-free over the long term.

To be considered as open source software by the software development industry, certain criteria must be met:

* The program must be freely distributed (It can be part of a package that is sold though, such as Red Hat has done with Linux in the example below).
* Source code must be included.
* Anyone must be allowed to modify the source code.
* Modified versions can be redistributed.
* The license must not require the exclusion of other software or interfere with the operation of other software.

Besides Linux, Mozilla (Netscape browser core), Apache (Web server), PERL (Web scripting language) and PNG (graphics file format) are all examples of very popular software that is based on open source.

How and why was Apache created?

The About Apache document explains how the Apache project evolved from its beginnings as an outgrowth of the NCSA httpd project to its current status as one of the fastest, most efficient, and most functional web servers in existence.

dhilipkumar

Why the name "Apache"?
The name 'Apache' was chosen from respect for the Native American Indian tribe of Apache (Indé), well-known for their superior skills in warfare strategy and their inexhaustible endurance. For more information on the Apache Nation, we suggest searching Google, Northernlight, or AllTheWeb.

how does Apache compare to other servers?
For an independent assessment, see Web Compare.

Apache has been shown to be substantially faster, more stable, and more feature-full than many other web servers. Although certain commercial servers have claimed to surpass Apache's speed (it has not been demonstrated that any of these "benchmarks" are a good way of measuring WWW server speed at any rate), we feel that it is better to have a mostly-fast free server than an extremely-fast server that costs thousands of dollars. Apache is run on sites that get millions of hits per day, and they have experienced no performance difficulties.

How thoroughly tested is Apache?
Apache is run on over 6 million Internet servers (as of February 2000). It has been tested thoroughly by both developers and users. The Apache Group maintains rigorous standards before releasing new versions of their server, and our server runs without a hitch on over one half of all WWW servers available on the Internet. When bugs do show up, we release patches and new versions as soon as they are available.

apache.org

dhilipkumar

What are the future plans for Apache?
*to continue to be an "open source" no-charge-for-use HTTP server,
*to keep up with advances in HTTP protocol and web developments in general,
*to collect suggestions for fixes/improvements from its users,
*to respond to needs of large volume providers as well as occasional users.

Whom do I contact for support?
There is no official support for Apache. None of the developers want to be swamped by a flood of trivial questions that can be resolved elsewhere. Bug reports and suggestions should be sent via the bug report page. Other questions should be directed to the Apache HTTP Server Users List or the comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix or comp.infosystems.www.servers.ms-windows newsgroup (as appropriate for the platform you use), where some of the Apache team lurk, in the company of many other httpd gurus who should be able to help.

Is there any more information available on Apache?
Indeed there is. See the main Apache web site. There is also a regular electronic publication called Apache Week available. Links to relevant Apache Week articles are included below where appropriate. There are also some Apache-specific books available.

What is Linux Mint..?

Linux Mint is an operating system that is used on PCs for production of elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution. It is quite easy to use compared to other operating systems.

Features of Linux Mint

The features that Linux Mint boasts of are as follows:

* Custom desktop and menus
* Several unique configuration tools
* Web based package installation interface
* Several different editions to fit individual user needs

Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?

Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months.

Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?

It doesn't. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong

What about proprietary software?

We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility.
