Univ warns college principals against dress code decisions

With the dress code guidelines issued by some college principals creating a furore, Kanpur University
authorities have asked college heads to take permission before issuing any "controversial" statements or face action.

"Principals of some degree colleges have announced a dress code in their colleges without any serious thought or permission from the university authorities," Kanpur University Vice Chancellor Prof H K Sehgal told a news agency.

"The media also gave the issue too much of importance without verifying facts, which caused a lot of trouble to the Uttar Pradesh government and the district authorities," he said.

The dress code issue has been done away with immediate effect by the university authorities and the state government has also prevented any decision in this regard, Sehgal said.

The principals of the degree colleges have been adviced by the authorities not to issue controversial statements. The University is also planning to take action against those who disobey the order.

All the principals of degree colleges have been called for a meeting next week to advice them against any further statements in this regard, he said.

Several colleges in the state had earlier banned girl students from wearing jeans which was later done away with government.

About 480 colleges of Kanpur and surrounding districts come under the Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, which includes degree colleges, medical and engineering colleges.
