ANU college reopens to poor attendance on Day One

GUNTUR: Utterly poor attendance of students in all departments of Acharya Nagarjuna University College marked the opening day of new academic year 2009-10, with hardly only 30 per cent of them coming to classes.

Not a surprising feature of the university students' behaviour, where the usual attendance is not very high and any long holiday is followed by such 'French Leave' by the students.

Majority of the departments have got used to this style, except for a few where strict discipline is maintained. One of the best decisions taken by Vice-Chancellor Y.R. Haragopal Reddy at the end of his first year in office, was changing the timings of the university academic classes from 11 a.m. start to 9 a.m. and closing the university by 3.30 p.m.

These new timings will come into force from July 1 and majority of students (Second and Third year only) are expected to come to classes by then. Those who were taking admission now through the PG Counselling, would attend classes from July 9 as scheduled by the ANU authorities.

Meanwhile, the results of the degree re-valuation papers, which was to be announced on Monday, has been put off to a later date. The university in a welcome gesture provided new Identity Cards to all its employees on Monday -- teaching, non-teaching, NMRs under the aegis of the VIKASA. The non-teaching staff union secretary T. Siva Prasad was also present when the ID Cards were formally given away by the Vice-Chancellor.

The Backward Caste Students' Federation State leader Ala Veera Yadav and ANU leader P. Krishna Rao gave a memorandum to the ANU authorities demanding reduction of fee for BC also from Rs.2,950 to Rs.1,950 being collected from SC, ST students. The University increased the number of seats in MBA Hospital Administration from 24 to 30 and all the seats were filled in counselling on Monday.
