Anna University To Penalise 4 Colleges Lacking Infrastructure

Chennai: Even as higher education minister K Ponmudy on Wednesday made public the penal action against four self-financing engineering colleges in the state, the Anna University (Chennai) has decided to act against four more engineering colleges, which were found wanting in physical and academic infrastructure.

It is reliably learnt that the university has decided to debar four institutions from admitting students in the first year in one course each. "The Gopal Ramalingam Memorial Engineering College in Padappai will be barred from admitting students to the BE Aeronautical Engineering course. The Sri Krishna Engineering College, also near Padappai, has been found wanting in the MBA programme.

Likewise, the New Royal College of Engineering and Technology in Mamallapuram and the Sri Padmavathy College of Engineering in Kancheepuram have been barred from admitting students to the BTech Information Technology course," a syndicate member of the Anna University (Chennai) said.

Last month, the university had issued notices to 31 private engineering colleges which were offering 85 courses without adequate infrastructure. "The university had given them 15 days time to rectify the deficiencies pointed out by the inspection teams and submit a compliance report. Accordingly, the management of 27 engineering colleges submitted the compliance report.

A second round of inspection carried out by the university revealed that the remaining four colleges had not improved the physical and academic infrastructure required to effectively conduct classes in select courses. Following this, it has been decided to put admission on hold in these courses," he added.

However, students in the second, third and fourth years will continue to study in the same institutions.
